Shane Carwin vs. Gabriel Gonzaga Slated for UFC 96; Liddell-Jardine Rematch Also Possible
Heavyweights Shane Carwin and Gabriel Gonzaga are likely to clash at UFC 96 on March 7th in Columbus, Ohio, Five Ounces of Pain is reporting.
An up-and-coming heavyweight, Carwin (10-0) is undefeated in his professional career, including impressive back-to-back victories in the UFC. Carwin, a standout wrestler, compiled an 8-0 record before joining the UFC and recording first-round knockouts of Christian Wellisch and Neil Wain in a combined 2-minutes and 15-seconds.
Gonzaga (10-3) earned a heavyweight title shot with four-straight victories to open his UFC career, including his head kick knockout of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, but was defeated by Randy Couture via third-round TKO in the main event of UFC 74 in August 2007. After dropping his second-straight fight to Fabricio Werdum early this year, Gonzaga rebounded with a first-round submission of Justin McCully at UFC 86 and a first-round knockout of Josh Hendrick at UFC 91 in November.
The March bout marks a significant step up in competition for Carwin and the winner of the matchup will move significantly closer to a heavyweight title shot.
In other UFC 96 news, former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, in a recent radio interview on The Tom Leykis Show, confirmed that he’s working towards a rematch with Keith Jardine at the march event. “There’s been a few names,” said Liddell. “We have Jardine listed. We want him in March.”

poooor chuck liddell. THE DEAN OF MEAN IS GOING TO GET HIM AGAIN
Chuck vs. Keith 1 was pretty boring. I really don’t want to see it again. Carwin against GOnzaga could end very very poorly for Carwin. I want to see Carwin get some real opposition…and I think he’s got a puncher’s chance. I am pulling for Gonzaga to win in brutal fashion.
If you look at Shane Carwin’s record, all of his fights end in the first round due to knock out or strikes, including his 2 UFC victories. Gonzaga has more to worry about than Carwin.
Chuck has been changing his fighting style so sorry I give this one to chuck first round KO.
Carwin v GG possibly attempting to get a heirarchy in the HW division??? Tought match we will see where Carwin exactly is imo
Liddell v Jardine, well Wandi knocked Jardine out in 36 seconds, Liddell beat Wandi therefor Liddell wins, except for if that’s Chucks thought process he won win this fight, Jardine is quite good and I really think Chuck goin to ATT for a bit might get him refocused on other facets of the game just not ko’ing folks, Chuck by ko 24secs in the first haha
*won’t*
I saw that photoshop pic one time after the fight it was kinda funny
No specifically at you Tru1
Hey Chuck is the man, I don’t care people need to realize what he has done for the UFC and MMA. In North America, all this washed up yada yada bullshhhit, leave the man be he still has a great record and fights top competition no some 2~3 fighter from whogivesa****ville, Mississippi…
I for one hope this fight happens, the first one was pretty good they left it to the judges their bad.. When Chuck takes his opponent seriously he usually comes out and handles business when he is nonchalaunt he goes to slepp
carwin vs gg is a battle of some big boys. everytime carwin fights it only lasts like 2 mins at most so idk much about him except he wears a 5xl glove and has some pop in his hands and hes never been to a decision. wit gonzaga i still think that when he gets hit he has flashbacks of randy turnin him into a pigface(imo thats wat happened in his fight with werdum) and shane def has the hands to do that. as for chuck vs jardine it doesnt really peak my interest. jardine has proven he can beat some of the top guys and hes proven he cant string together more then 1 impressive victory(beat forrest lost to alexander beat chuck lost to wandy beat vera)so by logic jardine gets knocked out bad in this one. and chuck is on the downswing of his career so it makes sense avenge any lose or settle any bad blood b4 u retire. i mean its very possible that chuck at ATT will add a few years to his career but i just dont see it. if chuck wants to stick around he should backoff tryin to knock everyone out and start using that wrestling that i heard hes got.
Cmon?! Liddell vs. Jardine part 2 ??!! This is a joke. It’s worse than the rumored bout between the iceman and Randy Couture. I don’t know if this is Dana or Joe Silva’s creation, but this is about as boring as ever. And if this ends up being the main card I will throw up. Liddell needs to fight someone of bigtime status. If he loses, he can’t cut it anymore and he goes away. If he wins, then he beat a top guy and we can reconsider him as main event status. I see no impact in any outcome of this fight. blah
kris i just left a comment and it didn’t show dont no what happend??
jerod
chuck will of asked for this fight he no’s he is better then jardine so will want to get his own back by beating him.
gg vs carwin will be a stand up war, i dont think any of them will want it to go to the ground, what with gg bjj and carwins wrestling. im going for gg in this one. ANYONE got any news on dos santos????
I’m actually looking forward to both of these fights. Jardine is a good gatekeeper type fighter at LHW and I know Chuck won’t be looking past him like he did last time. I think it will be a good opportunity for Chuck to show where’s he at now with his new training, and hopefully updated game plan.
GG vs Carwin is a similar type fight, its a good opportunity to see where each fighter is at this point, and move one of them within one or two fights of number one contender status.
I believe we have all come to a conclusion about “the Dean of Mean”. He is the most in consistent fighter ever. hahaha. Yet, he is so predictable. Like HuertaRogerHuerta said, he wins, then gets viciously knocked out, then wins, then gets viciously knocked out, then wins. So im gonna go out on a limb and say chuck wins. Although, its such a stupid matchup. If chuck wins where does he go from there? Fight the loser of silva/rampage or the loser of machida/silve or just man up and fight anderson? Its a waste of a fight for the Iceman in my opinion. Chuck doesnt suck, he can still win, and i think he will eventually get back into title contention. But he is never gonna get that belt back. Yall can say well hey look at what couture did. Hes in his mid forties and he won the HW belt back. Hahaha but the difference is the LHW division is so stacked its goddamn ridiculous. Chuck wins by comeback TKO in 2nd. And i see Gonzaga giving carwin a wake up call. Although i wish Carwin would win because i think with his power he could knock lesnar out. Then again so could Gonzaga if he fights cautious. Gonzaga by KO in 1st.
Carwin vs Gonzaga is a really interesting matchup. Too close to call imo. I don’t think Gonzaga is as overated as many think he is, and you can’t get too excited by the level of opposition that Carwin has walked through (nothing less would have been acceptable). Carwin should take it as I beleive is expected by the UFC.
I couldn’t get excited for the first jardin/liddel matchup, and especially a rematch. Liddel just wants to avenge his loss.
C’mon guys, when Bruce Buffer announces “THE DEAN OF MEAN KEITH JARDINE” its awesome, he probably has one of the best announcements for his name out of all the fighters in the UFC. Just for that reason im going for Jardine on this one. But im still hoping for the rebirth of Liddell at ATT and he’s still one of the most lethal strikers in the game so you can never count him out.
Shane Carwin is from denver so im rooting for him. He’s a good boxer and a powerful wrestler as well so it should be an interesting match up against Gonzaga and his hairy gorilla body.
If Carwin can keep it standing he has a chance to pepper Gonzaga and wear him out like someone said (as happened against Randy and Werdum). I think if Gonzaga wins he might be in line for another title shot. If Carwin wins they’ll probably set him up against the Nog-Mir loser and maybe a shot if he can get past both of them.
Either way, Gonzaga and Carwin are two guys big enough to take away a bit of Brock’s size advantage
For those asking where Chuck goes from here if he wins the fight….As far as I’ve seen he’s not talked at all about a title shot or anything like that. He’s looking to fight. That’s it. And I for one, think that’s very smart. Looking to the next fight and whatever happens, happens.
IMO I think there should be a little more respect for him and what he’s done. The guy is a fighter. Let him F*****g fight and just F*****g enjoy it. Win or lose. He’s fun to watch so F****k off about everything else.
Agreed.
GGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHUCKIE!!!!! RE-VENGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
& LEARN SOME TAKE-DOWN SKILLS FOR GDNESS SAKE!
ahhhh……BIG OLD SHANE CARWIN is gonna dominate Gonzaga just watch…i predicted it and its gonna come true one of the biggest matchs in ufc history…..Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin…..carwin is a monster!
^^^wow, worst post in the history of mmafrenzy.com ^^^…..i have a feeling this guy is a kimbo fan
I am of the believing that if chuck fights jardine again jardine is just gonna end up the way he was at the end of the wandy fight flat on his back.
Chucks biggest issue was he expected to be able to just walk right through jardine and evans he didnt respect them. I dont think he will have that problem a second time around against jardine. Chuck 1 rnd KO (knockout of year contender 2009)
Its hard to see where carwin is at because he hasnt fought someone of gonzagas standard before its one that could swing either way but if carwin wins this gonzaga is no longer a contender and just a gatekeeper in my eyes even though he is pretty close to that now
yo gslinger,i def agree wit u about chuck…..i just think he looked passed jardine too much and got caught off guard…but i think he had a lil respect 4 rashad’s fighting ability, just not enough….da iceman is my favorite fighter of all time, and i pray 2 lord dat AMERICAN TOP TEAM teach him how 2 keep his guard up…1st round k.o. over jardine…..1:32
interesting aussie this is all true…I wouldnt count on chuck koing jardine he is changing his whole game around now….expect a takedown to GNP….or a takedown to a sub
incase you didnt know chuck has great jui jitsu he just never uses it…..so dont count that out plus att has some of the best jui jitsu coaches in alll of mma thats what there known for…he’s training there for some reason my guess is somebodys got a new ground game……I think chuck is smart and has finally relized that he cant go on forever as just a striker…im just saying dont be surprised if chuck takes this to the ground and trys for a sub!
Good point, my friend. People sometimes make the mistake thining that just because Chuck doesnt use jiu-jitsu, it means he doesn’t have it. When, in fact, he trains in that just as much as kickboxing.
I would be quite surprised if every credible MMA fighter didn’t train in jiu-jitsu a fair amount. It has become a necessary skill to be familiar with even if you have no real intention of using it offensively.
chuck who? Oh that guy, is he still on a mission to defeat all who have beaten him, I think he’ll die of old age first
you know del, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, pretty much the face of North American MMA the guy whos record is 21-6-0 who has only fought top contenders for umm pretty much his entire carrer. Beat a who’s who of MMA,who ya has lost a few fights and got ko’d by the #1 contender in the LHW division, who can still step in the cage with anyone at 205 and be ready to fight, the guy who at 39 is still a threat in the division.. He is out of title contention by atleast 3 wins(imo) why not go after the guy who beat you by a split decision last year? everyone else seems to be already scheduled to fight someone else.. So if Jardine is avaliable whynot, del you can dislike Chuck thats fine yet please understand that his Championship reign was great he was knocking out everyone left and right and he is a huge MMA star worldwide moreso than um what 98% of the population he has beating top guys and fought only top guys soo if he wants to fight Jardine so be it
Chuck has beaten~ Wanderlei, Tito 2x, Babalu 2x, Randy 2x, Gumby, White, Belfort, Bustamante, Mezger, Randleman, Monson, Jose Landi~Jons, Overeem
His losses include~ Evans, Rampage 2x, Jardine, Gumby, Couture
thats still pretty good for an old guy i think..
cheers
Yeah, that is pretty good for an old guy.
Me or him or is Chuck the truth True1??
Watching the countdown, saw the Rashad KO again, and I just have to say….
“Man he’s still sleep!!!1!1 I just saw him on the street corner here in Atlanta!! LOl!1Lol111 Lol!l1l1!”
Unfortunately, thanks to true1 that was all I could think of when I saw it.
Kinda funny, it was a good countdown though, also I will say that it doesn’t seem that Rampage is all about this fight, I watched the Dana White vlog and he seemed the same way its just interesting
fr,
I agree. Just watched the Vlog, and watching the Countdown, Rampage is all about the Forrest fight still, he needs to be worrying about Wanderlei. And that talk about “no one can beat me, but he beat me” didn’t even make sense. I hope this is still a good fight, but I have even less expectation for Rampage to win (which started pretty low to begin with) after seeing the countdown and the Vlog…granted on the Vlog Rampage had probably just flown over from the UK, which will negatively affect you for sure.
O and if I’m not around too much the next few days (which I probably will be but…) Everyone have a great Christmas or (insert celebratory religon week here____) be safe and take in these joyous moments with friends and family cheers
My presence will be varied. I’ll be around during the day today, tomorrow maybe not so much. I think I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates….or even if you don’t
. But seriously, if you celebrate another holiday happy that. And if you don’t celebrate anything, happy Festivus (”for the rest of us”)
hmmm…I have a comment awaiting moderation here, not sure why, maybe because I put two smiley’s in it…
d’oh, there it is, as soon as I put that there.
carwin is seems scarier than brock.
gonzaga will kill brock i not gassed.
this is a move to protect brock from a tough match up.
i’ll be surprised if mir doesnt kill brock though
hahahaha 10-15 years shaved off his life by he decapitations by Houston and Silva. hahahahaha holy hell thats hilarious.
tim silva……i didnt know anderson, wandi and thiago had a fourth brother …lol
Yeah, maybe you should leave “witty” to some others…
True1, hey man no worries I believe we are all getting to understand your humor, and actually its quite funny… I know A LOT about MMA and the fighters I like and ofcourse their opponents, I’m not attempting to be a braggard or anything but I retain information quite well for some reason… Calling me stats is cool in my book forsure if you choose to do so.. O and Chucks bday was last wednsday..
Not sure why it was held up but I would have approved it sooner if the UFC 96 presale didn’t have all sorts of glitches.
I take it that means you were busy buying your tickets instead of keeping up the site….no worries.
