Tito Ortiz

Former UFC light heavyweight champ and current MMA free agent Tito Ortiz appears headed to Affliction.

The promotion has not yet announced the potential signing, but has promoted Ortiz as a “special guest” for a press scheduled for tomorrow in Los Angeles to promote their upcoming “Day of Reckoning” event, which takes place on January 24th in Anaheim.

Andrei Arlovski, Josh Barnett, Vitor Belfort, Matt Lindland, Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Chris Horodecki, Dan Lauzon, and Vladimir Matyushenko are also scheduled to appear at the press conference.

Ortiz has failed to earn a victory in his last three bouts dating back to late-2006. He was last in action in May, fulfilling his UFC contract with a unanimous decision loss to Lyoto Machida. Ortiz then announced that he would be signing with EliteXC, but the promotion collapsed before an agreement was reached. Now he appears likely to sign with Affliction, but will be unable to compete until Spring 2009 at the earliest after undergoing successful back surgery, that is if the reeling promotion survives to promote a third event.

Hopefully his 1st fight will be with Babalu.

  • bo702 says:

Good for the promotion because he puts people in the seats, but frankly, I am tired of Tito.

  • surfingk5 says:

I like how it’s still “Former UFC light heavyweight champ”…way former and many ass whoopins ago…

“that is if the reeling promotion survives to promote a third event.” Ouch. Tito better hope they survive and he better not be stupid about his contract. He’s got to be runnin low on funds.

I sincerely hope it works out for him. He one of my favorite fighters to watch get his ass kicked.

  • bo702 says:

surfing, you got that right. Im sure he is not running out of money, but we all know who makes the real buck in that relationship. too bad it took opening her legs to do it. He will be fine as long as he keeps riding that Jameson express…..Literally!

  • justin says:

Maybe this is an omen of the end for Affliction. Tito announced his signing with ProElite, within weeks they went under, now he’s expected to announce his signing with Affliction, their end can’t be far behind. Even if they don’t tank within weeks of signing him, it will probably be July before they have another event, because they’ll have to wait on Fedor’s mysterious hand injury to heal. So, I suppose its possible that Babalu could be his first fight in Affliction.

    Surfing,
I’m with you in that he’s one of my favorite fighters to see get beat up.

  • DaNNyBoY says:

Tito made himself look stupid by saying he was goin to sign the biggest free agent contract mma has ever seen with EliteXC. then they go under and now he heads to Affliction, i cant wait to see him get smashed

  • mburtoni says:

I sometimes wonder if people realize that, not counting his 3 stoppage wins against an aging and overmatched Ken Shamrock, the last opponent Tito actually finished (rather than going the distance) was Elvis Sinosic at UFC 32 in 2001. Since then, he beat Vladimir Matyushenko and a young Patrick Cote by unanimous decision, he barely eked out split decision wins over Vitor Belfort and a young Forrest Griffin, finished Ken Shamrock 3 times, fought to a draw with Rashad, and lost to Randy, twice to Chuck, and then to Lyoto. Is Tito a great fighter? Of course. Has he accomplished a lot in MMA? Absolutely. Is he overrated and declining in relevance? Yes.

  • bo702 says:

great! so this earth is blessed with two more head cases. Yipee for us!!!

  • Gi87 says:

agreed that he is outdated at least but he does fill seats, and i admit i am accited to see his next fight. I just want to know who else is gonna bolster their win record by woopin him

  • Jazzkok says:

I like tito but he’s one of those fighters who never evolved with the sport and remains completely one dimensional/predictable. He should throw in the towel and just retire cuz the last thing he wants on his already tainted career, is a beat down by babalu.

  • mburtoni says:

It is very true that Tito sells PPVs, though I personally would not be more likely to buy a PPV because it had Tito on the card. But, I have to admit I am somewhat curious to see how he performs after the back surgery. If it is true that he has consistently had horrible back pain ever since the fight with Randy, and the surgery fixes that, he could conceivably become competitive again. He is only 33, much younger than many guys who are still competing. He could definitely benefit from some time at a new camp, though I don’t know how likely that would be.

    • devin says:

i think the best thing he could do for his career is go 2 a new camp, preferably one with a solid standup game like american top team or something like that, but i dont think his big head would fit thru their doors if u kno what i mean. but other than that i cant see anything he could do 2 get back on the wining track. the only people he brings into team punishment are wrestlers, and when he cant take someone down i.e. machida, liddel, he is outta his element and he struggles. wrestling and ground and pound is all he knows

      • dbiz says:

Or he could relize that it’s been 7 years since he FINISHED anyone besides Ken Shamrock and decide that he ain’t as good as he thinks he is and hang it up. Go home, toss the hot dog down the hallway a few more times and stop cluttering up the landscape with the stench of mediocrity.

  • B W says:

Babalu is better at almost every facet of the game. IMO he is the better striker, wrestler and obviously BJJ practitioner. I think he chokes out Tito in the 2nd round. I am glad to see Tito in the news again for something other than his personal life. I would also like to see the Law kick his ass. The best career move he ever made was getting out of the stacked LHW division in the UFC, although I could think of quite a few matches that i did want to see him in.

  • fr702 says:

Good for Affliction for accepting another fighter that the UFC has zero intrest in…

Most of their fighters have spent considerable amount of time fighting for ZUFFA so I’m rather happy that Affliction is going to get more PPV sales by hiring Tito and riding the coat tails of UFC

Tito “the hunington beach douche bag” Ortiz, hmmmm where to begin?? Well the “former LHW champion” is a great self promoter forsure. He went to ProElite and was going to sign the largest contract blah blah blah tito has a huge ego blah blah blah eva, then ProElite realized they should no longer be a business and then he (tito) went to go have back surgery, now after not doin much in the last few years except attempt a triangle and beat up oldman Shammy Shamm o and grab a fence, and just having back surgery he is going to get a contract with Affliction the guy can self promote..

I would assume that Affliction would set up a fight of tito vs Vlad (the janitor) Mateshhennkdioomy(sp?), that way the former IFL LHW champ could face the former UFC LHW champ for the WAMMA/Affliction LHW belt because Tito deserves a title shot just ask him…

I hope whoever he faces he gets ko’d I see this as a simple waste of money, a short term fix to the long term problem of having a pretty lousy promotion, I believe Atenscio heart is in the right place, but he doesn’t have the mind to run this end of ther game, he should stick to his Tshirts

    • justin says:

Then, of course, if Tito were to win the WAMMA/Affliction belt, some troll would show up here talking about how its not fair that the UFC doesn’t co-promote and they need to co-promote so they could have someone beat Tito and take the WAMMA/Affliction belt and blah blah blah.

You are right though, the guy can self promote.

      • surfingk5 says:

Right place, right time. I think it does well for a promotion to have your good guys and bad guys. Though not as extreme as wrestling obviously. I think he played the whole “bad boy” role perfectly. Unfortunately he let it go to his head, took it personal and forgot he could be easily replaced…Huerta and others can fulfill the “asshole” role now. Plus if you talk that much s***t you better actually step into the ring and win some meaningful fights.

  • southcakalak says:

“that is if the reeling promotion survives to promote a third event.”

hold the phone!!….they still havent put on the second one yet, this still has all kinds of time to collapse

  • andyroo says:

is it just me who want tito to do well…yes hes an arrogant pr**k but thats just his way of life.
im not sayin i like the guy but i love to see him fight.
dana knew he would lose to lyoto Machida, thats whyhe was given the fight in the first place (i dont think any1 will beat him unless they land that lucky punch).
tito needs to get himself in a different camp with different training partners and trainer (1’s who dont kiss his ass) and change his game cus if he dosnt he might as well just give up.
i hope he does this and maybe we will see him in the ufc 1 day on winning form

    • justin says:

I don’t like Tito, and therefore I cannot pull for him to win fights, I’ve actually tried to pull for him, and I find myself not.

Also, its highly doubtful Tito will make it back to the UFC.

“I’m in the MMA promotion business, I’m done with the Tito Ortiz business.” -Dana White

      • andyroo says:

‘I don’t like Tito, and therefore I cannot pull for him to win fights, I’ve actually tried to pull for him, and I find myself not.’

i felt the same way about josh koscheck but hes changed my opinion of him with his last 2 fights.

all im sayin is u dont have to like him as a person to want to see him fight

      • justin says:

        andyroo,
Maybe you should read the comment I made a little further up the page. Its the fifth one down.

      • andyroo says:

        ok sorry m8

  • micjasbro says:

this isn’t even worth a comment

  • bo702 says:

UFC will do just fine without Frito,…I mean tito. What am I saying, There have been doing fine without him. Affliction numbers will g o up with tito on a card, but they will eventually buckle because Tito and Fedor cant fight on every card. They could if there was only two cards a year, and that will spell disaster for Affliction.

  • fr702 says:

Well 2 fight cards in 2009 would double their output of 2008, what I think that Affliction can give us 4 fight cards in ‘09? And that’s a huge strecth to say that, they’re like the Delorian (car from back to the future) all shiny and pretty kinda sexy and odd don’t know what to exactly make of it, the potential is there, just really really bad marketing and its difficult to take on the #1 guys (UFC) with a one trick pony, o and with Delorian getting busted with all that coke, we have (had) a wife beating alcoholic at the head of Affliction yay

I was kidding about Fedor v Tito but u never know what’s going to happen

  • gunslinger says:

actually and im not being sarcastic at all her but i would say tito facing fedor would be the best move for tito right now…he has a good shot he wouldnt get subbed by fedor and he can stand with him and if he somehow upset fedor that would re boost his whole life of fighting

  • fr702 says:

O Fedor would sub the fuk outta Tito, and beat him in standup… I get what u are saying Gun and I respect where u are coming from on this but Fedor would quite simply paralize Tito if Tito fought him his first fight after back surgery.. Joe Swanson anyone??? I just simply don’t like Tito haven’t ever, nothing makes a bad day better for me then to pop in Tito v Chuck (either of em) and watch Tito get destroyed, seriously try it one day when everything goes to shhhhit just watch Tito get his assss kicked… I do agree that Tito v Fedor would sell a hell of a lot of PPV’s

  • gunslinger says:

I dont know if he would….i mean tito has never been subbed except in his second fight which was a long time ago and he has faced really good jui jitsu guys i think he is a good enough wwrestler that fedor would not get him down on the ground anyways…..and fedors striking sucks imo the only reason he hits people is because the people he fights are stupid…he throws his punchs the same way every fight all you have to do is step back from his haymakers and throw a jab…he throws a overhand right and then an overhand left almost every match…tim sylvia should have beat fedor but i guess sylvia would rather clinch with fedor than to use his jab and win………awell but i dont tito at all either i think hes a punk with no class and now he tainted to (jenna jamenson Blaht!)…but i really think a fight with fedor could save titos career

  • trey_trey says:

tito, just go away… far, far away!

  • Willy D says:

Hahaha, Tito is going to be a broadcaster for Affliction! That is priceless.

    • justin says:

haha… “(He) will be able to provide fight insight unlike anyone else.”

Here’s what I expect, “I blah blah blah. I blah blah blah. Blah blah blah me blah blah. Blah me blah. I blah. Blah blah I.”

  • jenkins says:

yall are dissin on tito and i can respect that. but i like the guy. he is charasmatic. without charisma, everything is less entertaining. even if he is a punk and he always has excuses, alot of people in the world would be the same way. so get the F*** over it people seriously. And to the guy who said babalu is better in all aspects of fighting. you must be smokin somethin for real homie. hahaha. tito has much better wrestling and ground and pound than babalu. tito would probably lose in that fight but i think he will get some wins in Affliction and i think he is going to suprise alot of people. He has lots of years to gain that determination to win back. Liddell has lost a few in the last two years…and hes still fighting and we all know eventually, he will start winning again, its basically inevitible. I bet tito loses to babalu then fights a no name and wins, then gets a big win, then probably fights fedor and gets manhandled haha.

    • surfingk5 says:

His record speaks for itself man. He’s lucky he had a couple draws. Time will tell. I predict he will continue to be a douche bag. He’s my favorite fighters to watch get his ass kicked.

  • gunslinger says:

i could care less about tito or fedor if tito retired i would care less and i just hope arlovski ko’s fedor in like 2 seconds

  • jenkins says:

if you could care less about tito ortiz or fedor then why are you even wasting your time by commenting this post? hahaha exactly

  • andyroo says:

i take back what i said about tito…..he is suck a pr*ck and should be shot……http://mickeys.com/mma/

‘if he could change his name what would he change it to’ is the question

    any guess’?
