Joe Stevenson could receive a lightweight title shot later this year if he is victorious over Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 74 according to a report from Yahoo! Sports:
He’s preparing to fight Kurt Pellegrino on Aug. 25 at UFC 74 in Las Vegas. UFC president Dana White concedes that Stevenson may get a shot at the UFC lightweight championship later this year pending the resolution of a steroids complaint filed against champion Sean Sherk by the California Athletic Commission.
Stevenson was the welterweight winner on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter after defeating Luke Cummo by unanimous decision. In his first fight after winning the reality show “Daddy” was defeated by Josh Neer at UFC Fight Night 4. He returned from the loss to win 3 straight UFC fights over Yves Edwards, Dokonjonosuke Mishima, and Melvin Guillard. Unlike most contestants on the show Stevenson has a wealth of experience 27-7 MMA record.
The UFC Lightweight Championship is expected to be up for grabs at UFC 78 which will take place in New Jersey in November. If Sean Sherk’s steroid test is overturned he is expected to face B.J. Penn in the main event. If Sherk’s suspension stands and he is stripped of the lightweight title Penn is expected to face another top-contender for the lightweight title.
