Alaskan mixed martial artist Doug Evans will face Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 in Cincinnati according to Sherdog.com.
Evans quickly made it to the UFC winning all 5 of his fights in the Alaska Fighting Championships promotion before getting the call to face UFC lightweight and Sports Illustrated cover-fighter Roger Huerta on The Ultimate Fighter 5 finale. Evans put up a good fight in first round of the bout stopping Huerta and controlling the rising fighter but Huerta took over the fight in the second round eventually taking Evans’ back and reigning down punches. Evans was unable to escape the position or barrage of punches and the referee stopped the fight.
Gurgel holds an 11-2 MMA record making his professional debut in 2002. Gurgel opened his career with a 5 fight win streak before losing his first career fight. After another 5 fight win streak Gurgel earned a UFC contract but was handed just his second career loss in his MMA debut at the hands of Mark Hominick. Following the loss Gurgel defeated Danny Abbadi at UFC 63 and Diego Saraiva in his last UFC bout at UFC 73. Following the UFC 73 win Gurgel was hospitalized for a broken jaw and blood in his urine but, now healed, Gurgel will return to the UFC in Cincinnati, the same city he currently fights out of.
