Top UFC lightweight Kenny Florian has announced that his next fight will be at UFC 78 on November 17th in New Jersey.
The event was to be headlined by a UFC Lightweight Championship fight between Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn but after Sherk tested positive for steroids following his successful title defense at UFC 73the proposed fight has been cancelled. Unless the California State Athletic Comission overturns the positive steroid test Sherk is expected to be stripped of his title. B.J. Penn is still expected to fight in the main event for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship. Though his opponent is not known Florian is one of several lightweight fighters who could get the call to fight Penn.
Florian competed on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter making it to the middleweight finals where he lost to Diego Sanchez. He has a 6-3 MMA record and is known for his devastating elbows. Florian rebounded from the loss to defeat Alex Karalexis at UFC Fight Night 1 and Kit Cope on The Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale. In his next fight he was victorious yet again defeating TKO Lightweight Champion Sam Stout on the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 3. The series of wins earned Florian a shot at the vacant lightweight title against Sean Sherk. Sherk defeated Florian by unanimous decision at UFC 64 to win the lightweight title. Florian followed the loss up with two more wins over Dokonjonosuke Mishima at UFC Fight Night 9 and Alvin Robinson at UFC 73.
