Jon Fitch: I’m Back In The UFC

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Nov 20, 2008 at 6:42 pm ET63 Comments

Jon FitchLess than one day after being released by the UFC for failing to sign a video game agreement, welterweight contender Jon Fitch has reached an agreement with the promotion and will return to action at UFC 94 on January 31st against Akihiro Gono, according to MMA Rated.

“Communication kind of broke down with Dana (White) so we talked with Lorenzo,” Fitch told MMA Rated. “(I) just got off the phone with him and we came to an agreement. We’re going to move ahead and I’ll be back in the UFC. We’re going to sign off on the video game and I’m back. It was never even about the agreement or the contract. It was the approach that we felt Dana was being a little bit hot-headed and was threatening us right off the bat. It didn’t seem like a professional way of doing things.”

glad to hear this, too bad for you affliction

  • timcat says:

Bet Dana loves him going over his head to the big boss.

  • fr702 says:

ahhhh HUGS for everyone, went to the big boss man huh, well best of luck with that good to see that everyone can get over this drama forsure and now everyone can be Fitch on the video game yay, big F~ing cry babies the entire lot of them, and the UFC could lose the #2/#3 WW in the world over stupid managment

everyone needs to get past this, it is what it is and the UFC aka Fitch’s employer won bottomline the employer usually wins in these type of tiffs

  • fr702 says:

90% of ZUFFA is the Brothers Fertitta, 10% is Dana White, prettymuch they can do whatever they want… When or if they decide they need to step in clearly they will and Dana i believe realizes this and respects it as well, i think he likes his job

  • Jazzkok says:

Dudes i agree. I’m glad Fitch is back cuz the ww div. wouldn’t make sense without the top guys in there. Dana can power trip some times and act like a little bi*ch. Good thing for us he TOO has got a boss.

    So who’s Akihiro Gono?

  • surfingk5 says:

Can’t wait to discuss this some more…like 70 more posts saying the same damn thing should be good!

Looking forward to the fight with Gono.

I do like Fitch’s style even though he fights with a diaper on. Need to get him some damn tissues and Dana some tact…I think the tissues will be an easier get.

  • bo702 says:

Dana has always had a hot head. Even back in the day when he had his gyms. Every other word is (Expletive). I think this bad attitude has caught up to him and maybe he realized he did a dumb thing. Lorenzo or Frank (mostly Lorenzo) should step-in more often before Danas mouth is going to put him on the unemployment line like 6% of the people are in this town.

  • russiandoeboi says:

and look fitch stood up to dana and won

  • fr702 says:

Russiandoeboi, how did Fitch actually win? He ended up signing the damn thing and still makes UFC lots of $$$$ did he standup to Dana kinda but how did Fitch win?? Also we know that ZUFFA will not disclose any information on the matter unless Dana says something in his video blog vlog or whatever the F they call it now

  • fr702 says:

Jazz, seriously Gono is awesome, his entrances are great youtube him and check it out, he did lose his last fight in the UFC but he is a tough competitor and quite the entertainer imo, really talented fighter but as usual the UFC doesn’t really promote Japanes fighters the best well ZUFFA doesn’t, um fight of the year candidate Miguel Torres v Maeda and then in Maeda’s next fight he is on the undercard but whatever checkout Gono and all his craziness on da interwebby thingy

  • rusiandoeboi says:

    good question.
    i wonder.
    wait.

    what’s thatsound………..

it’s the russian dough boy losing interest
    over and out

  • Ed says:

I have been shocked and somewhat puzzeled by this whole thing. I do like John, but at this poing I feel sorry for him. When has going over Dana’s head ever really worked out for someone in the long run. It was the right thing for him to do but doesn’t mean a good move…

  • surfingk5 says:

Jon just won himself an up hill battle. As long as he wins, just like everyone else, he’ll be fine.

I don’t see this being an issue…damn, here I go again, just can’t shut up.

  • russiandoeboi says:

    surf,
it’s easy put your hands on your head and step away from the keyboard

  • 2girls2cups says:

i feel like i’m comin in halfway thru this whole topic but from the exerpts i heard from dana, it seems like one of those intstances where i can see why people might hate dana. personally i like the guy, but it sounds like he has no respect for his fighters on this one and just wants to treat them like slaves cuz he want’s to cash in on this video game deal. i’m not sure of the details but why do these guys need to sign a lifetime deal? i’m with fitch, if they want that type of commitment, then they can offer to take care of his familly in the event of his death. getting back to dana, his clips make it seem like he really can’t give a **** about his fighters. but he should cuz without fighters, he’d have nothing and without dana, the fighters would likely have nothing as well. it goes both ways but it sounds like dana’s trying to flex too much on this one. this is all based on a fraction of the information i’m sure, so take it with a grain of salt.

  • joe s says:

Good for you Jon the best thing zuffa could do at this point is to let that egomaniac White go. He has outlived his usefulness at this point. He was good at getting MMA on the mainstream map but he doesn’t have the skills to keep it there.

  • surfingk5 says:

Nope, I have a problem. It would only be worse if I had a bag of cheetos, a beanbag chair and porno.

  • surfingk5 says:

Although, would that really make it worse??? hmm

  • gunslinger says:

    timcat,

this is off subject but u like mushroomhead dnt u…im kinda glad someone else here does …you cant walk down cleveland without seeing at least a hundred mushroomhead fans…i remember in cleveland booing slipknot off stage…..slipknot gets no love in cleveland..they got battered with rocks!

  • gunslinger says:

does everyone elsee go buckeyes at the top of the mmafrenzy homepage?…if so why does it say that is kris or eric ohio state fans if so good….michigan isnt even gonna score on saturday

  • russiandoeboi says:

    ha ha.
    i feel the same.

  • KOuch says:

    surfing,

You’re crazy man…..very funny too though.

  • surfingk5 says:

    mmm, i love cheetos…

  • surfingk5 says:

Thank you KOuch, after the drama and BS from the other three or four topics of the day I felt a little humor was in order…what better than the truth to make you laugh!!!

  • kelvin says:

this seemed stupid to begin with. i usually side with ol’ UFC pres., but according to his comments, he seemed like he was being an idiot about all this. then again, this is one of the few problems with the UFC pretty much running practically ALL of mma.

  • DBiz says:

I hope that damn stadium falls into a hole to China. DEATH TO THE SUCKEYES!!!

I guess this means Zirkin, or whatever his name is, is going to continue being a dick at every turn.

  • justin says:

Glad to see they got this sorted out. It sounds like Fitch is still getting AKA involved in his negotiations, and Dana is still fed up with those guys, but the Lorenzo stepped in and said, “Ok, Dana won’t deal with AKA, I will.” I understand being upset with the way that the whole thing was handled, but if you end up signing it in the end, and you really don’t have a problem with what you’re signing, sign the dang thing from the start, wait a few days, then call Dana up and say “Hey, I didn’t like the way that went down, can we do things differently next time.” That would save everyone a lot of trouble.

  • gunslinger says:

    go buckeyes DBiz Go buckeyes!

  • rudeone says:

All I have to say in this matter is that dana is the boss if you like your boss at work he prolly isn’t doing a very good job. Poeple always say dana is an ego trip and this and that but look at what he has done for mma. That is the way of the world though you do one bad thing and noone ever remembers all the great things just that one bad one. He has tons of fighters to worry about and can’t afford to get caught up with one guy no matter how good or bad they are. Dana isn’t an agent it is not his job to look out for the fighter it is his job to look out for the ufc and he has done and is doing a hell of a job.

  • JoeSama Bin Rogan says:

I hope this all goes away soon.

    New topic:

I heard Horn is fighting roushambow paulharris at 93.

  • timcat says:

    Gunslinger,
I am a Mushroomhead freak. I’ve traveled to Cleveland to see the Old School shows at Peabody’s. I was there when the Cleveland Faithful booed Slipknot off the stage. Not only did they boo, they threw batteries at them. Mushroomhead = great band!

  • DigYourOwnHole says:

I just played the game, if you up up down down left right left right b a b a select start, you can turn Fitch into a post mortem commemory action figure which pays no royalties to Fitch’s family sink a rear naked choke on Dana which pops his head like a big ripe white zit and big bloody words drip down the screen “DANA WHITE HEAD FATALITY!”

And I say Dana and Fitch need to grow up……

  • bsbiz says:

Gooners are in trouble, fr… Play well, but soft. Good thing they’re going to City this weekend.

  • dbiz says:

Well, all my dear friends are registering, so I had to also.

Just as an aside…do you know how hard it is to find a picture of a midget wearing a ball gag?

  • bsbiz says:

Did he break his hand get a mysterious hand injury typing that?

  • dbiz says:

Uh oh. I think we broke the site.

  • Us And Chuck says:

Nice to see he is back going to the parents after the spoiled brat threw his toys out was a good idea of AKA’s.

I bet the Fertitta’s ground Dana for a month and keep him off camera for the TUF Finale after this stunt tut tut tut…:)

  • bsbiz says:

Maybe the site broke its hand got a mysterious hand injury.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

im really happy bout fitch being back but untill kos and velesquez r back i stand firm that DANA IS A TOOL!

  • fr702 says:

Where did Kos go, he still is head-lining the Dec 10th fights and still has a contract with the UFC?? Cain is injured sooo whatever, he will sign too

  • dbiz says:

Kos was never cut. Dana said that as long as he wasn’t injured against Alves when he gets that fight, he’s got one after that too. READ PEOPLE!!

  • Aaron says:

Way to step in Lorenzo. Very smart move to keep Fitch

  • bsbiz says:

I guess the big question is who contacted the Brothers Fertittaz? Was it Fitch himself and he worked something out, or did AKA contact them? Anybody know anything?

  • Justin says:

    bsbiz,
Read the article, it says “we” everywhere, not “I”. The only place it says “I” is actually “(I)” which indicates that the “I” was added by the author, and therefore could have actually been an implied “we”, since the rest of the article uses “we”. This would indicate that it was AKA, and Fitch.

Also, in an article I read on another website it had some quotes from Bob Cook (of AKA) on the talk with Lorenzo.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

dbiz i did read that and i also read the fight hes got on the 10th is his last under his contract and dana wont negotiate it same wit velesquez so there both pretty much out.
“I’ve been cut. Christian Wellisch, who had a fight coming up, his bout agreeement was recanted and his promotional contract terminated along with mine. Dana that said Cain Velasquez — he has one fight on his contract — they’re not going to renegotiate or re-up his contract, so his next fight will be his last in the UFC. Pretty much along the same lines with Koscheck, they said they wouldn’t renegotiate his contract, so after his next fight, he’s most likely going to be done with the UFC also.”

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

so he fought alves then he fights watever that guys name is on the 10th and thats that accordin to that article and if u read danas part all he said was i promised him the fight on the 10th and im a man of my word neva says anything bout afta that

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

    p.s. DANA IS A TOOL!

  • Justin says:

    huertarogerhuerta,
“As for the fates of welterweight contender Josh Koscheck and heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez — both of whom were rumored to be next on the chopping block — as well as heavyweight Christian Wellisch, who was cut along with Fitch on Wednesday, Cook stated that all of the fighters have worked out agreements to remain with the UFC.”

That’s from another MMA website that shall remain nameless.

  • Justin says:

    Also,
I read somewhere, though I don’t recall where, that part of the dispute with Velasquez is that AKA wants to take some of the “contract language” that is in EVERY UFC fight contract out of Velasquez’s contracts. So Velasquez may be in trouble regardless of the game contract stuff. Though no mention of that has been made since Fitch was brought back in.

  • surfingk5 says:

    @huertarogerhuerta, I LOVE DANA WHITE!!!!!

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

i loved dana too surf until yesterday after wat i read bout how straight up a$$hole he acted with that whole “f this f that f them” rant i said it before he was like the lead singer of some 80s band “my band my mic my scarf im the guy in front of the stage all the time its my band” i dont like axl rose and thats wat dana comes off as

justin i had not read that about kos or velasquez ill look into it. i knew about the contract language wit cain im not sure wat all that means wats contract language entail?

wit kos and fitch and cain back danas a lil less of a tool but until he stops actin like hes god personified hes still a decently sized tool. believe me i was a diehard dana defender but now hes too much of a prick to defend. his ego is gettin too big cuz hes the guy who everyone sees on tv so he thinks hes bigger then the talent that go out there and fight. thats retarded thus makin him a tool

  • justin says:

    re: “wats(sic) contract language enatail(sic)?”

Various different things regarding pay scale, time period of pay, promotional details, licensing rights to allow the UFC to show the fight even if he’s not under contract with them anymore, that kind of thing I would assume. It would be hard to say without actually reading the contract. Their contracts aren’t so simple as “You fight this guy, this day for this much money, sign here X________” There’s a lot to it.

  • justin says:

woops…minus the (sic) on entail, that was my misspelling.

  • dbiz says:

huerta, You don’t know what he was told or what his beef with the equally unprofessional AKA crew is, so saying that one interview made you hate him…pretty much makes you come off like a douche. I’m trying not to be as much of a troll lately, but facts is facts.

It takes two sides for this to happen. On the one hand, you have management that wants to change standard contract language for a mediocre (at best) fighter, on the other you have an emotional guy who probably feels walked upon with the amount of s*it he HAS to take (see: dealings with athletic commissions, etc.).

What you (and nearly everyone else) did was lump all the blame on Dana. It takes two. Dana doesn’t freak out on anyone for just anything. He swears a lot, sure. But generally he has a good business head. And that means it took something he feels is very major to try to cut ties with an entire management group.

If that interview made your opinion of Dana change, you clearly didn’t have a well-formed opinion.

  • Mikew says:

It seems to me that training is a full time job and some of these guys should have management or someone helping them with what they do best . Let the fighters fight and the business guys negotiate. Who knows what actually happened, it’s all speculation but it would be a shame to lose a fighter as exciting and of the high calibre that Fitch is. Velasquez is an amazing fighter and a possible future champion, i dont think the UFC would want to lose him, maybe Dana’s ego is getting in the way of business.

  • joe s says:

the bottom line to all this is that dana is a tool

  • russiandoeboi says:

in tennis there are lots of orgs, but there are rankings which depend on amount of success an athlete achieves not - my opinion, or dan’s or yours or anybody.

nadal has to try to beat Federer on hard court, fedor would have to fight in a cage sometimes. knees to head of downed opponent, elbows soccer kicks.

the sport of mma is young,
dana has done a lot for it buthe is becoming a dinosaur now.
things in the world are changing mma won’t be immune to change

  • dbiz says:

Hey, gun…how’s it feel to know OSU is going to be left out of a BCS game but my Bearcats are WELL on their way?

  • wylk says:

Fitch and other UFC fighters have stock (ownership) in UFC. If Fitch dies, then those shares go to his family. That’s why signing lifetime rights doesn’t make a big difference. UFC success is Fitch’s success. Sign the deal, get more shares too. Unless UFC goes bankrupt, it’s a value deal for everyone. Companies go public all the time, UFC is on the same track.
