Liddell Could Face Silva At UFC 95 In London

Posted by Eric Shapiro on Nov 17, 2008 at 6:54 pm ET48 Comments

Chuck LiddellThe often speculated bout between middleweight king Anderson Silva and former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell could finally become a reality at UFC 95, which is set for February 21st from the O2 Arena in England, according to The Sun.

The article adds that English native Michael Bisping will for once not be part of the London event due to coaching duties for The Ultimate Fighter. However as expected, several Brits including Dan Hardy and Terry Etim are already booked to compete on the card.

While I would naturally be all shades of psyched to see Silva and Liddell do battle, I cannot help but feel that if and when Chuck falls to the canvas in defeat, it would indeed be the last time we see him inside the octagon. Though if he were to emerge victorious over the Spider it would certainly do miles toward placing his name back atop the light heavyweight ladder. Also, and I probably shouldn’t mention this for fear of a jinx, but since UFC 95 will be overseas, could Liddell vs. Silva even be gratis? Oh look now I’ve just gotten way ahead of myself.

NOT GOOD… NOT GOOD AT ALL… ONCE AGAIN LIKE THE RANDY/LESNAR FIGHT… I WANT CHUCK TO WIN BUT I DOUGHT IT… PLEASE CHUCK DON’T TAKE IT… REMATCH JARDINE…. MACHIDA,THIAGO, THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFENT POSSIBILITIES…. HE CAN’T AFFORD ANOTHER LOSE…

  • up-in-ya says:

Obviously Chuck ” HEAVYBAG ” Liddell doesn’t enjoy winning anymore. Seriously this guy should be on suicide watch!! Anderson Silva…..Really!

  • patrick says:

I am a huge chuck fan too but really if he loses the ufc aint gunna cut him n he aint gunna lose any respect is he, n if he wins he looks amazing beating the best in the world, hell make loadz of money out of it, n he has a punchers chance n we all no he has one hell of a punch.

  • patrick says:

Does anyone no if we could set up a mma forum talking about mma news n rumors and fighters ud like to see in organisations like the ufc?

  • brock says:

me too im a big fan of both but i think silva whud just put the retairment plan to finish a chuck whud b done hope it dnt come to this …… and still b an awesom fight if dose happen im there !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Willy D says:

Is this UFC card still going to be a tape delayed PPV in the U.S. or free on Spike? If they add this fight, has to be a PPV and that is 90ish bucks forked out to UFC over 2 weeks.

  • Kris Karkoski says:

Patick – I’ll have a forum up by the end of the week, but feel free to register for an account now as the same account will be used for the forums. Thanks for reading!

  • Nico says:

I THINK CHUCK IS GETTING SLOWER AND IF HE WANTED TO TAKE THIS FIGHT HE SHOULD TRAIN IN SPEEDING UP HIS PUNCHES. HE STILL HAS THE KO POWER SOME FIGHTERS WISH FOR AND IS PRETTY GOOD EVERYWHERE ELSE. I THINK HES GOT A CHANCE TO WIN THIS FIGHT AND THATS GOOD ENOUGH REASON TO TAKE IT. THIS IS THE ICEMAN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. HE NEEDS TO STRATIGIZE SO HE CAN LAND THE HUGE SHOT AND BE THE GREAT COUNTER FIGHTER THAT HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN.

  • Jazzkok says:

Dudes, like i said after “sugar” sent “the iceman” to never never land, chuck is finished. ESPECIALLY if he takes this fight. SILVA is pissed cuz he ****ed out against cote, and wants to make an example out of his next opponent. We all know how this one is going to end if it happens.

If chuck lidell wants to give it another shot, he needs to start @ the bottom, seriously dude.

    CHUCK VS VERA

    CHUCK VS HOUSTON ALEXANDER

    CHUCK VS ERIC SCHAEFER

He needs one of these to stay in the game.

  • Dale says:

why not Randy vs. Chuck “Retirement” fight? Loser must give it up!

  • DR.DOOM says:

    I agree Jazzkok ,

Too many of the “favorites” are cutting in line to get shots …. look at florian as an example .. the guy had to fight half of the UFC roster to get a shot at BJ … after the GSP fight …. so now florian has to wait at least 6 months to cash in on a fight he went through hell to get … Liddel has to win a few to get a title shot .. give him bisping then okami … if he makes it silva should still be waiting .

  • Eric Shapiro says:

Dale- Oddly enough there is actually a vague rumor going around about a Randy vs. Chuck IV, but that fight wouldn’t make much sense and I doubt anything will ever come of it. But you never know…

  • windmiller says:

Chuck nor Randy has to much to gain from beating the other i don’t think it will happen

  • Chris L. says:

Eric- That rumor was actually out last year too. I saw it in Ultimate Grappling magazine. I think if anything that may be a match-up as a retirement thing. It may violate the “rule of three” (best of 3 fights with one person) but I could see it just as a marketing thing. Plus they’ve already booked a another fight between Wanderlei and Rampage even though Wandi has won two out of two.

  • Mikew says:

I am amused to read people think Chuck is washed up, he is far from it. The simple fact is fighters win and lose and Chuck being over aggressive in his last fight got caught. The same thing could happen against Silva if he cant control his emotions. I think after a while if you dont advance or add something to your game than you are predictable and Chuck cant expect to win ‘em all the same way.

  • jeremy says:

i agree with u mikew chuck liddell will prove hes not washed up when he wipes the floor with silva

  • E-ROC says:

I would rather watch Couture vs Anderson Silva than Chuck vs Silva.

  • faceoff4 says:

Not sure why Chuck would take this fight. His last loss was ugly. I am a huge Chuck fan but I just dont think he has the game to stay with the Spider. He is still a major draw regardless of losing 3 out of his last 4 and you have to think that this fight would draw a huge base.

  • rudeone says:

Dr doom saying that chuck needs to fight bisbing or okami to get a title is plain stupid. Not only would chuck kill them both he isn’t fighting for the belt and the fight isn’t at 185 it is at 205 but that is insulting to say he needs to beat that overated bisbing. To say that chuck is washed up is flat out wrong wandy silva lost 3 in a row including chuck and he is the king of the world still accourding to most. If liddell doesn’t push the pace and counters and the spider is agressive he has a great chance of being knocked out when all you do is strike there is a chance of getting koed. I hope they do fight so all you chuck haters will stop bashing the guy.

  • SurfingK5 says:

Only Chuck knows the benefits of taking any of his fights. He is the one fighting.

It amazes me at how short people’s memories are. Yee of little faith are too easy to jump ship with the next big thing. You’ve lost the ability to believe.

Without a doubt there just aren’t many fighters that have legitmate careers after 32-33. But for those that continue on and are fighters. True fighters, you can’t count them out.

Why is it acceptable for Randy to fight just because he likes to fight? And, not for others? Who cares about being a contender or being a champion. Why can’t he fight to find out if he can win? Just win. Just be better than the other guy… Just like Randy said for himself.

As for the path Chuck should take to fight anyone??? He’s already paid his dues to fight whoever he fu*king wants. Check his record. For the UFC there’s a benefit of entertainment that many people will pay out the nose for a fight like Chuck v Anderson. GOOD FOR THEM!!!

I think it says something about your character when you say he shouldn’t fight or you question the benefits for him. It says that after a couple of losses you’d puss out and give up.

Chuck has entertainment value and the willingness to do what others can’t or won’t. What if he loses? What if he wins? Who gives a ****? Sit back and enjoy the fight…IF ANDERSON HAS THE BALLS TO FIGHT CHUCK

  • Nico says:

IF ANYONE THINKS CHUCK IS FINISHED YOU ARE SERIOUSLY OUT OF YOUR MIND. THIS OLD MAD STILL HAS A CHANCE TO WIN ANY LIGHTHEVYWEIGHTS OUT THEIR. THAT IS LIKE SAYING RANDY COTURE WAS WASHED UP AFTER LOOSING TO VITOR BELFORT, CHUCK TWICE AND THEN RETIREMENT. WHEN HE CAME BACK EVERYONE THOUGHT THEIR WAS NO CHANCE IN HELL THAT HE WOULD WIN HIS NEXT FIGHT, LET ALONE HIS NEXT TWO. LOOK AT THE FIGHT THE ICE MAN HAD WITH WANDY. THAT WAS A WAR! AND I BET YOU THAT RAMPAGE THE FORMER TITLEHOLDER DOES NOT DO ANY BETTER IN FACT HE NEEDS TO WIN OR EVERONE IS GOING TO TALK SMACK JUST LIKE THEY ARE ABOUT THE ICEMAN RIGHT NOW. EVERYONE LOSSES SOMETIME BUT IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE FINISHED. THE ICEMAN IS A PURE STANDUP FIGHTER THAT IS NOT AFRAID TO LET IT ALL HANGOUT, THAT IS WHY HE KO’S THE MAJORITY OF HIS OPPONENTS, THATS WHY HE IS THE LONGEST REIGNING CHAMP NEXT TO TITO, THATS WHY HE IS A LEGEND, AND THATS WHY HE LOST IN HIS LAST COUPLE OF FIGHTS. HE LIKES TO TRADE! HE IS ONLY HUMAN BUT NOT TO BE CONSIDERD WASHED UP OR FINISHED JUST YET.

  • DR.DOOM says:

he drinks and parties alot …… remember his in home strip pole ? chuck hasnt kept in serious shape lately except for the silva bout .And I’d like to see a rematch between them … after wandy beats rampage that is .If Chuck comes in like he did against evans then it will be a sweet night for the axe murderer .Liddel had his run and it was a good run .. but … I think he has another 3 fights and after going 1-2 he may consider taking a long break ..silva beats him .. henderson beats him … I give him the nod against a vera like opponent but thats all she wrote

  • rudeone says:

Dr doom it may seem as if I am bashing you after these last couple comments but you just seem to be saying things with nothing at all behind them. Chuck isn’t fighting for the 185 belt and he did fight wandy like he did evens he moved forward and press the action and came out on top I don’t see how you figure he is done and washed up. Of course he would beat a vera type opponent but to say hendo or silva will just easily beat him is crazy. Everyone has a few losses it doesn’t mean hang em up and call it quits hendo lost to rampage and then to silva won one and say he losses to franklin that would be three outta four would you say he should hang it up? Wandy lost three outta four but he shouldn’t hang it up? I don’t see where people come up with this madness! The list could go on of great fighters who have lost three outta four and came out on top. And to say he didn’t train hard for his last few fights is stupid as well I will give you the jardine fight because he said he didn’t train his hardest but to say a profesional fighter on his level isn’t training hard is a pretty big statement from some fan I think you should give the former champ a little more credit than that.

  • Dave5555 says:

Dana White is on a mission to DESTROY the legacies of Chuck and Randy.

Chuck is starting to sound like Evander Holyfield.

Wait till Tito has to get back in UFC – Dana’s gonna put him and Anderson Silva too.

    It’s all about the money

  • patrick says:

Has chuck anything to lose in this fight thou seriously, mega bucks for him coming towards the end of his career, plus hes in another huge fight, he still has at least 2 fights left in him so i think even if he does lose good on him if it happens, this is chuck liddell one of the biggest icons of mma eva, dnt count him out, all it takes is one punch, look at rashad or brock or ganzaga recently tht one punch lands thn youve won.

  • JOHNBOY says:

man i lot of negative comments there, im a big chuck fan and if this match is made then im guna be pumped, wat a chance for the iceman to get him self back out there, silva won’t of faced anyone with chucks power, if i was a betting man which i am the bulk of my money would be on silva but i never count the iceman out and always belive he will win.

  • Howard says:

Thoughts on this would be welcome:

Between Dec. 27 and March 7 UFC is planning five PPV events. To me, that is a high price to pay given the economy. Why not have one “Live” major UFC event per month for free and then a PPV the following month? It will deliver a larger, new audience and eventually bring more money to the UFC.

The road Dana is on between late-December and early March seems a bit greedy and is not expanding the base for MMA and the UFC product. Whether people like it or not — I happen to think Brock’s win is a huge opportunity for UFC to expand its brand. However, five PPV events in about 10 weeks is a bit much.

  • justin says:

    Dave5555,
That’s a pretty bold statement. I don’t see any reason why Dana would want destroy those guys legacies, or how he can really make a lot of money by destroying their legacies. Randy and Chuck still sign the contracts on the fight, if they don’t think they can win, then they shouldn’t sign the contract, period. Its on them, every time they get offered a fight, they have a decision to make, “can I win this or not? Ok, I think can so I will sign the contract.” Lets also not forget that most people were anticipating Chuck to KO Rashad. And they were expecting him to KO Rampage and Jardine as well. I think Jardine was intended to be a can to get Chuck back to his winning ways, Chuck went out and got beat, that’s his fault, not Dana’s.

  • justin says:

    Howard,
    1. What is your definition of greedy?
    2. December has two free events in one week.
    3. There is still a chance that 93 and 95 will end up free being that they are in the UK.

The UFC gets nearly as many PPV buys as they get viewers on Spike, they stand a good chance mid December to increase that with two free events in the same week, however, if they really want to expand their viewership through free shows, they need to be on network TV, which they won’t do right now because CBS/Viacom was the only company to show interested, and they wanted an ownership stake in the company, the UFC wanted no part of that, and I don’t blame them.

  • Ryan in NY says:

I personally don’t know how they’d put a UK fight on PPV. Given the time difference you can find out all of the results before the PPV would even start. Seems like a jip to pay $45 to see a card when you know all of the results.

  • Us And Chuck says:

I’m not a huge Chuck fan in the slightest but i think this is a good idea.

This is a win win situation for the UFC.

If Silva Wins he finally has a big name on his record although one on the slide in a big way and if Chuck wins imagine the hype this could bring having Chuck KO’ing The imaginary P4P best in the world ;)

Call me crazy but i have this hunch that if Chuck gets a win we could see Lesnar vs Liddell in Dec 09 for the HW belt or not this would be a huge attraction i’m sure this situation has to have come across Dana & Joe Silva minds.

But i can not see Liddell winning so meh……

  • Gonzo says:

    Howard,

I like your thinking. One PPV, one free fight. That is definitely worth it.

    Justin,
I don’t consider the UFC greedy, but they have all the best fighters, and paying $45-$55 a fight is hurting the wallet. I’ve had to make a lot of cutbacks recently, and I don’t want to cut out MMA. I can live without bottled water, Showtime and caller ID, not MMA.

  • justin says:

    Gonzo,
I get what you’re saying. I know they have actually stated they’re going to look at ticket prices and such based on the economy (it was in one of the video blogs I think) I don’t know if that includes PPV price. That being said, I have people over to help bear the burden. My dad and his cousin come over, so we end up splitting it 3 ways, so 15 each, not so bad. Problem with doing that is, you have to get people over that are actually accountable to pay up. If you find that they’re not accountable, you should charge when they come in…haha.

  • Matt says:

Nico said: “THE ICEMAN IS A PURE STANDUP FIGHTER THAT IS NOT AFRAID TO LET IT ALL HANGOUT”

    (*snicker*) I’ll say! ;)

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

eric yd u hafta put that at the end of the article u just bucked us all. as in when watchin the giants on fox and joe buck is the announcer and he will say something like “eli manning hasnt thrown a pick in the past 4 weeks.” then the next play eli throws a pick. uve bucked us all!!!!

  • D-BOI says:

I like jazzkoks idea of chuck vs. Vera instead, makes more sense than a silva vs. Liddell and vera has already expressed when he fought at hvy weight he wanted a piece of the iceman

  • justin says:

I think that a fight with Vera could be a good fight to get Chuck back on track, basically he’d be fighting a can at this point.

  • DR.DOOM says:

Chuck and Randy are done ……..They are older fighters who had their day in the sun . why do you want to see them fight up until they break so to speak .lets bring back sugar ray leonard to fight sugar shane while we’re at it . people get older and lose their edge …. its the way it is .Im not interested in seeing chuck again or randy …. bring in the new guys and move on .

  • nev-o says:

machida would kill him too!!! he trains with anderson

  • nev-o says:

    chuck vs houston alexander

  • DBiz says:

Dr. Doom… Hey, I know. Let’s automagically end everyone’s careers after a few years so we don’t have to ever see older fighters. That way we never have to worry about anyone getting old and losing their edge (in your mind….since you’re the only one that has a well-formed opinion).

Hey, under your rules Fedor is an older fighter who had his day in the sun. Let’s put him out to pasture, eh?

I’d put Randy up against most any of your “younger” fighters. I’d even put him up against Brock again if he can keep from losing. It would certainly be a better fight than Sean “The Syringe” Sherk against Mac Danzig.

  • Eye-Rhyme says:

    DON’T DO IT CHUCK!

  • Turk says:

Liddell is a legend yes. Anderson would crush him. If Liddell could pull off an upset it would redirect his career, maybe even kind of like Randy even though Brock [slapped him around] that killed me. Oh yeah huge paydays for both. Winner gets $1,000,000

  • DR.DOOM says:

    Dbiz
Thats not what I said . think you read my entry the wrong way . this isnt about ending careers ,,,,its about giving the right fighters the spotlight for what they do because they are the best …. chuck was wnning and now he isnt … why should he keep getting top fights while others wait behind him who are more deserving …… can you say that its fair ???……its not about what you have done its about where are you now ?

  • Justin says:

    Dr. Doom,
Chuck is still a big draw, probably still one of if not the biggest name in the UFC, and there would be a revolt if he didn’t get at least co-main event.

  • DR.DOOM says:

and I agree with you Justin … just as long as those co-mains are against new guys too ….. i liked watching couture /liddel liddel /jackson for example , but , those matchups are done and its time for others to make landmark wars …. on the main stage . thats my only point ….. Liddel vs anderson sounds like a good fight agreed … but if silva moves up then he should really be facing machida or Griffin IMO

  • DBiz says:

No way should Silva be facing Griffin. Not until he’s a full time light heavy. If you aren’t committed to fighting at a particular weight class, you shouldn’t be getting a title shot at that weight class. That applies equally to lower weight classes too.
