Arbitration Hearing To Clear Up Vera’s Future

One of the most talked about UFC fighters, Brandon Vera, may soon have a much clearer future. The promising heavyweight fighter will have an arbitration hearing either today or tomorrow in front of the California State Athletic Commission over him ditching long time manager Mark Dion who was reportedly turning down Vera’s fights without ever discussing their possibility with “The Truth”.

Vera, despite having just 8 total MMA fights, is one of the most talked about fighters in the sport as his surge in popularity and dominating wins have made him not only a favorite of many fans but also the focus of lots of talk. Vera has yet to be defeated in MMA winning all of his fights so far in his career.

After going 4-0 outside of the UFC Vera jumped to MMA’s biggest stage in 2005 when he defeated Fabiano Scherner with a second round TKO. He next posted a quick KO win over Justin Eilers at UFC 57 and quickly followed it up with another win, this time a submission victory over Assuerio Silva at UFC 60. In his last fight in late 2006 Vera dominated former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 65. After his win over Mir he was reportedly offered a heavyweight title match against Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 but the fight was declined and Randy Couture took the match instead ultimately winning the heavyweight belt.

“The Truth” currently has one fight left on his current UFC contract with intentions of signing a new contract following his next fight which could take place in November.
Rumors surfaced earlier today on several internet forums that Vera may be facing Andrei Arlovski at UFC 78 in New Jersey this November, likely for a heavyweight title shot early next year. The possibility of a matchup with Arlovski was something we mentioned more than 2 months ago though the fight may finally become reality later this year. Keep in mind these are rumors but if they come to fruition it will be a very important fight for his personal career as well as the UFC’s heavyweight division.

Once the hearing wraps up we should learn more on when and where Vera will be fighting next so stay tuned for more news on his upcoming plans.

"…offered a heavyweight title match against Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 but the fight was declined…"

What idiot would do that??  He would have dessimated Sylvia, and would be getting all the attention Couture is getting.  He would already be up there in the mix, but hopefully, they'll put him against someone he can prove it

  • Kris says:

That goes back to the disputes with his managers. It isn't all public yet but the premise was that Vera was aking too much money to fight when in reality his manager was looking to make extra money and never asked him to approve or decline the fights.

Every fighter aims for a title shot so I think everyone got suspicious when word of that became public and now he is trying to get it all cleaned up so he can fight before the end of the year.

Yeah, I think I would have some issues with my manager too. Arlovski and Vera will be great, and I am sure it will lead to a title shot for the winner. Question is who will get to the title first. I read an article with Vera where he said he is already preping for Fedor in 2008. Arlovski will be good preparation with his Sambo background and all, but how do you really prep for Fedor?

  • Kris says:

I think to prep for Fedor you just need to be confident in what you do and train like always. Nothing throws an athlete off more than making major changes in your training. This fight should be a great one.

Thanks for the info, haven't read about this anywhere else.

Vera turned down a title shot?  Or was it his manager?  I would have killed my manager, are you kidding me.

Who cares if Vera had 1 fight left on  a ****ty contract, if he would have won that title fight with Sylvia, he would have recieved the contract he wanted.

Orlovski is a tough match up for Vera, due to his size and gun-shy-ness.  Vera will have to commit himself in order to inflict damage on Andre, and could leave his chin open to a KO.

Winner of this fight gets a title-shot against Gonzaga.

  • scotchydow says:

Winner gets Couture you mean!!!!!!! You are right Kris, I have only seen a few instances where changed game worked. Couture vs Belfort 1 is a good instance though.

  • Accomando says:

Gonzaga will be the new champ.  I saw Gonzo wearing a hooded sweat-shirt of the university of Gonzaga, pretty hillarious.

He is too big for Couture, and I say that knowing Couture is a big guy.  Gonzaga didn't just beat Cro-Cop, he utterly destroyed him, Cro-Cop had never been beaten like that.

The Randleman/Cro-Cop fight was a lucky punch by the Monster(his 2-9 Pride record points to that) Fedor couldn't finish Cro-Cop when they fought.

Come on, Randy has been a LH Champ, Gonzaga is the real heavyweight, and he will prove it.  I think Randy is awesome,  but he will lose.
