UFC veterans Jeremy Stephens and Josh Neer both earned weekend wins in two separate Iowa MMA shows.
Stephens received special permission from the UFC to take part in the fight with his UFC contract essentially on the line. It is typical for UFC fighters who lose their first fight or two to be granted permission to fight in other MMA promotions to build up their record. A loss typically results in their UFC contract being terminated though that wasn’t the case this weekend as Stephens defeated Nick Walker via late round TKO at Midwest Cage Championships 9. Stephens made his UFC debut at UFC 71 in May losing by submission to Din Thomas. He has a 9-2 mixed martial arts record.
Former UFC fighter Josh “The Dentist” Neer debuted at 155 lbs. at GreenSparks Fighting Championships 5 defeating Paul Rodriguez early in the first round by TKO. Neer lost to Drew Fickett in 2005 but returned with consecutive wins over Melvin Guillard and Joe Stevenson but back-to-back losses to Josh Burkman and Nick Diaz pushed near out of the UFC. He won 4 straight MMA fights earning a spot on the IFL’s Quad City Silverbacks roster to lose his IFL debut to Mark Miller by a sub-one minute KO in the first round.
