Posted by Kris Karkoski on Nov 7, 2008 at 9:34 am ET31 Comments

UFC 93 Franklin vs. Henderson PosterThe UFC has announced that UFC 93 “Franklin vs. Henderson”, which is headlined by Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson and also features Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, has sold out just two weeks after tickets went on sale for the January 17th event at the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

The sales were the best ever for the UFC in Europe, with more than 6000 tickets selling in the first week and the entire 10,000 selling out in less than two weeks.

“The UFC brand of mixed martial arts is the already biggest indoor sport in the UK – and we are ecstatic that the popularity and passion for the UFC is matched across the Irish Sea,” UFC UK Division President Marshall Zelaznik said. “This is our seventh successive sell-out in the British Isles since April of 2007, and we now hold records in six of the biggest arenas in all of Europe. We have the most dedicated and passionate fans in sport and we are thrilled to be bringing some of the biggest names in the sport to the Emerald Isle early in the New Year.”

That’s impressive. I do have a question though for the Brits. What are the other indoor sports in the UK?

  • D-BOI says:

man i cant wait to see the shogun and coleman fight, coleman acted like a little **** last time, but wandy jumping in the ring to fight afterwards to defend the brazilians was sweet ass sweet

  • FR702 says:

Great to see this is sold out

Hendo v Fraklin (LHW) is going to be a good fight I cannot wait

Shogun v Coleman I don’t know what to exactly make of this fight @ one point Shogun was “the best in the world” then not so much along to go with his knee problems and training issues??
Coleman what am I to make of him??? I’m not questioning the HammerHouse legend just saying I don’t know what to expect from this fight, but I will tune in and find out

  • JOHNBOY says:

justin thats a good question we dont really have indoor sports over here, maybe darts witch sells out or snooker which also sells out but were talking 2000 people here,
    darts
    snooker
    boxing
masters football (old pro’s playing not that high profile tho)

thats all i can think of really we do have basketball an hocky but prob 1 man and his dog go watch that lol

  • FR702 says:

Snooker is fun I don’t care what anyone says…

Hey JohnBoy do u enjoy cricket (like go to the matches and such)?
I don’t get that game that your countrymen are so fond of

  • Justin says:

    johnboy,
That’s what I thought. Why do they build these places then? Concerts? Over here, most basketball and/or hockey arenas seat around 14,000. The RBC center here in Raleigh seats over 20,000. Then you have to consider that we even have indoor (American)football fields that can hold 50,000+ (not sure the smallest, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy holds 63,000 for Football and 70,000 for basketball.) Imagine if the UFC could sell out an event there…that would be a major accomplishment.

  • Justin says:

…though it wouldn’t make much sense to hold a UFC in that large of a venue.

  • Ryan in NY says:

Anyone know if this this going to be shown on Spike instead of PPV? UFC.com is blocked at work or I’d check myself (well maybe not… I am kind of lazy today).

  • JOEY D says:

RYAN ITS POSTED AS “INTERNATIONAL EVENT” WHERE IT NORMALLY SHOWS PPV OR SPIKE BROADCAST , SO I HAVE NO IDEA AT THIS POINT . IT SHOWS BEING LIVE AT 8PM GMT NOT SURE WHAT TIME THAT IS IN THE STATES

  • Ryan in NY says:

    @ Joey D Thanks!

I would think that means it’ll be on Spike but the deal isn’t finalized. I don’t know how they could charge $40 to see the PPV at nite when you can read the play-by-play during the afternoon.

If it is on Spike… that will definitely be a good card to see for free. :-)

  • Jazzkok says:

Dude if this was @ 185 i’d root for HENDO because HENDO”S got a real chance at a title shot @ 185, but since it’s @ 205, i’m rooting for RICH.

We ALL know rich isn’t going to be a threat to the mw title, but we all SHOULD know that he’s an awesome fighter, a natural two 0 fiver and has a real shot at moving up the ranks in that division

  • DBiz says:

Jazzkok, you mean Hendo has a good chance at going to sleep during a title fight? I mean, I’m sure Silva appreciated the first round dry humping he got, but Hendo just couldn’t deliver the money shot, you know what I mean?

    I think you do.

  • Justin says:

    I agree with FR702, DBiz, that’s funny.

  • Jazzkok says:

    DBIZ

Dude first of all, henderson OWNED silva in the first round, and had silva screaming at his corner. He made the mistake by trading with him in the second and not sticking to the game plan (which is what fighters who fight silva do) got caught with a knee, which was intended to be a kick, and of course the rest is history and he was choked out.

Henderson WILL beat silva, after he ANHIALATES bisping. I think silva is an awesome fighter, i was just saying that henderson is inevitably going to get a title shot @ 185, which is why if this fight was at 185, i’d root for him since i like both rich and hendo.

  • DBiz says:

Owned is an awfully strong word for “got the takedown and laid on top of him because Silva had his arms locked around his neck and shoulders.” Did he win that round? Sure. Did he do any damage? No, I’m afraid he didn’t.

And if you read what you wrote about the second round it basically says, “In the second round he voluntarily moved away from what had been working and got bent over and forced to take it.” It’s a bit of a paraphrase but having just watched it again the other night it’s pretty accurate.

I’m going to quote the great Mon Calamari Admiral Ackbar on what a rematch means for Hendo. “It’s a trap!”

  • Us And Chuck says:

For me Hendo will knock out Franklin my god he is so overrated……

The indoor Arenas are used for fancy ass poxy concerts (you can not beat a club show) Sports Entertainment (if i said wrestling Vince will be pissed he doesn’t want to alert the athletic commission or tax man) Darts (yes some Brits enjoy fatty’s and their man boobs throwing darts) Snooker (meh) Boxing (normally involving a glass chinned Olympian) and Dog Shows and sh!t.

Don’t worry about Silva hiding in the Middleweights for though i’m sure by boy Robert Lawler will knock him out…..i can believe :)

  • JOHNBOY says:

fr yeah i am a cricket fan, good english sport, bit like baseball i dont get that game all i no is that u have to hit the ball out the ground lol bit like what u guys thing about cricket,

    justin

yeah thats all i can think of concerts? we dont have that many built tho we dont really have one in leeds an were like 4th biggest city in england i think

  • Gonzo says:

    Ryan in NY,
The UK PPV sales are always low. You can watch it live at 3pm eastern time. Not worth the money, so just go to Hooters to watch it. Usually the card is below average, so they air it on SPIKE at night, and make the money on commercials sold. This card actually has star power, so it may just be PPV. A rumored fight with Marcus Davis and Chris Lytle, would add a lot to the card.

  • T3chn3tnium says:

yall should just build indoor soccer arenas like they do in eastern europe.. that would be nice. sit ALOT more.

  • Justin says:

Thanks guys, I suspected they were mostly for concerts and such. I forgot that the WWE spends some time over there as well. What do you guys think about the NFL bringing games over? I’m personally not a fan b/c of the impact on the teams, the fact that they do it in the middle of the season, and it takes away a home game for one of the teams involved.

  • Vinz C1ortho says:

Is the O2 arena considered a full size arena? 10k peeps is pretty small.. I always got the impression some of the Football/soccer arenas over there were freakin HUGE.

  • Us And Chuck says:

    Justin@

With all due respect i think it is embarrassing Justin it ruin’s the credibility of American Rugby (I’m sorry i can not call it Football) any national sport doing this is insulting to their fans of its origins :)

If Football games were to go to the states i assure you World War 3 will break out in fact fans are seething that the Premier League might play games aboard it has been thrown around and the nation has told them to Fook off.

For me it really is insulting to real fans including season ticket holders who pay over the odds any way.

What is the opinion in the States on what the NFL & NBA has done ?

  • Vinz C1ortho says:

Hey what about us Canadians and you damn Euros stealing away our NHL games.. This is crossing the line and might I add you WILL NOT Be getting any maple syrup in your stocking this Christmas.

  • T3chn3tnium says:

Us and Chuck, sorry to inform you but i do believe they have signed a contract to bring the EPL to the states.. i doubt it will make it as far south as i am but surely in the northeast region.

Dunno what season it will be, but i am pretty sure they are bringing them here..

  • Us And Chuck says:

LOL Vinz at least you still have Curling :)

I heard about that have attendances been poor in the states & Canada for this to happen ?

Nothing has been signed yet T3 although personally i hope not no offence

Richard “The Idiot” Scudamore The Chief Executive of the F.A. Premier League is adamant fans from the UK should be proud and enjoy the experience of League football abroad…….as this idiot heard of the credit crunch ?

Sepp Blatter head of Fifa has said the proposals are “an abuse of association football authority” and they can say goodbye to an English World Cup bid.

I’m not too upset yet as my team Wolverhampton Wanderers have not reached the Premiership yet although it is looking highly likely we will as we have been so dominate so far in our League this season :)

  • T3chn3tnium says:

yeah wolverhampton is awlays near the top in the coca cola league or whatever its called. i heard that awhile back that they will be playing over here. only makes since if we are sending our NFL teams over there..

I know the big 4 in EPL will sell out. and if they do come hopefully they will play in the new stadium in Arlington. biggest stadium in the world.

  • Us And Chuck says:

Indeed T3 yes it will :)

It would not really help the mid table clubs like the Bolton & Wigans of the PL how many Americans would want to see Wigan vs Portsmouth in New York how will this benefit them?

Now if they did a club competition involving certain teams off season that would not be so bad as it does not affect the League the NFL should have done this in Europe IMO that way it would de value season.

Gotta go now as i’m getting ready to Watch Super Zab on the Under card of Joe Calzaghe slapping his way to a UD over Jones Jnr :)

  • Vinz C1ortho says:

In the states yeah.. in Canada the arenas are always packed for hockey

  • Justin says:

    Us and Chuck,
We think that the NFL are idiots for taking games, especially regular season, out of the country. NFL Europe failed (I think) so they’re trying to build the sport up abroad. Everybody here thinks its dumb for basically the same reasons I said before that it was dumb, plus the season ticket thing that you mentioned. With the season tickets, we have to buy PSL (Personal Seat License) then buy the tickets themselves (Carolina Panthers – $50+. My uncle has seats that are middle of the upper deck in the corner of the end zone), then if they take a home game away…it can be frustrating.

As far as the NBA is concerned…I don’t know many people that actually care at all what the NBA does. As far as I’m concerned they can pack up shop like ProElite, as long as it doesn’t affect NCAA basketball (unfortunately it probably would).

Also you asked about NHL, they’re really struggled with the finances lately. A couple years ago, only a few teams were making money, that’s changed since the lock out and reneg on the contract with the players association. The Carolina Hurricanes were at a net combined loss from the time they moved here until they won the Stanley Cup, that playoff season finally caught them up on everything, as far as I know. (I think) They’ve been making money since then. In the US the only national carrier they have a deal with is Versus, which only has 1/3-1/2 the market of ESPN.

  • Us And Chuck says:

    Thanks for the reply Justin
