WEC 36 Weigh-In Results: Filho Misses Weight By 7 Pounds; Matchup With Sonnen Now Three-Round, Non-Title Fight

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Nov 4, 2008 at 9:50 pm ET43 Comments

Urijah Faber and Mike Brown Weigh-In For WEC 36Fighters hit the scales this afternoon in Florida to weigh-in for their matchups at WEC 36, which takes place tomorrow, November 5th, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida and airs live on Versus.

WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber weighed in under the 145-pound featherweight limit at 144.5 pounds on his initial weigh-in attempt, while challenger Mike Brown missed the limit by one-half of a pound on his first try, but successfully weighed in at 145 pounds on his second attempt.

WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho, meanwhile, made headlines for all the wrong reasons on Tuesday, missing the 185-pound middleweight limit by an astonishing 7 pounds, weighing in at 192 pounds. On a second weigh-in attempt two hours later he had shed 3 pounds, dropping to 189, but remained 4 pounds over the contracted weight. Challenger Chael Sonnen successfully weighed in at 184.5 pounds and the bout will go on as a three-round, non-title clash with Sonnen receiving 25% of Filho’s purse as penalty for failing to make weight.

Rani Yahya also failed to make weight for his bantamweight bout against Yoshiro Maeda, weighing in one pound over the 136 allowed bantamweight limit. Maeda has agreed to fight Yahya at 137 pounds and fight will go on as scheduled.

  • FR702 says:

Filho is letting everyone down and he will be the final WEC MW champ win or lose, its disrespectful imo un real
Maeda taking on Rani at a catch is fine its only 1 pound

    Brown made weight

But damn Filho 7 over comming in com’on man

  • FR702 says:

The Maeda fight should be aired with the extra time the WEC has now thx Filho, you aren’t a great champion shiitts weak son wizzzeaaakk

  • JoeSama Bin Rogan says:

Seven pounds?? Is there a reason he weighed in with Brock Lesnars XXXXL gloves on and one of Randy’s Ear lobes in his pocket.

  • KOuch says:

7lbs?!?!?! Is that a f-ing record? Big disappointment. As hard as it may be to feed someone of Filho’s talent to the wolves, I hope Silva/UFC throw him straight to the UFC’s top 5 MWs upon arrival. No holding back or easing in. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! 7LBS over is like a high profile lawyer showing up to a rapists trial in old jeans and a TSHIRT that says, “practice safe sex, go F yourself.” BAD!

  • JoeSama Bin Rogan says:

    KO,

You mean to tell me I wasn’t the only one who attended Joe Son’s trial.

  • FR702 says:

Ahhhh good jokes nicely done on both behalfs

  • Alfred.C says:

“7LBS over is like a high profile lawyer showing up to a rapists trial in old jeans and a TSHIRT that says, “practice safe sex, go F yourself.” BAD!”

    That is f-ing hilarious!

i don’t understand why the Rani yahya being over 1 lb is a big deal, the UFC gives their fighters the 1 lb give or take for fights. does anyone know why they’re making a big deal about it? Also, Brown being over by .5 is too much? i know it’s a title fight, but jesus christ, anyone ever hear of scale error?

anyway, i agree, **** Filho, i mean that just screwed Sonnen now, even if he wins, which i REALLY hope he does, he doesn’t get the belt. I’m calling Shennanigins on this whole Title deal. Bullsh*t plain and simple.

  • Dietrich says:

I swear this @#$! fight is cursed… It is really difficult to be in Paulo’s corner right now. I woke up and watched the interview on another site and I thought he sounds clear and ready to go and now this…I am glad I didn’t make it down there for the fight…
    @ FR702,
You aren’t the only one hoping that fight makes the broadcast… I hope Rani went to the YMCA to learn to box…

  • FR702 says:

Rumor has it that one of Filho’s cornerman told Lindland that if Sonnen beats Filho, Filho will give Sonnen the belt

  • Alfred.C says:

FR702 – i heard the same rumor on MMANews.com, i doubt they will actually do it if Sonnen wins though.

  • Chris L. says:

Alfred C. being over 1 pound is ok in the UFC when it is not a title fight.

Honestly, I am not surprised Filho missed weight because lets face it the title means nothing now. I do believe this is the last show with the WEC having middleweights anyways. I’m not making excuses or saying that it’s cool to do so but it happens when guys don’t really care or when their weight cutting schedule gets jacked up from having a short turn around after a cancellation. Either way it’s inexcusable to miss weight but other than the 25% pay cut what’s he losing?

  • FR702 says:

I hope if he does lose that he keeps his word, should be a bit of pride thing for him

On the other hand if Filho subs Sonnen again I don’t want to hear that Filho missed weight type excuses from Sonnen

@Chris L., Filho should have made weight and he is losing many fans imo ya he is undefeated and whatever but he is taking this seriously imo….

  • DR.DOOM says:

crappy about the weight …..sonnen is alight-heavyweight naturally so he will be able to get on a few pounds before the fight to even it up . it doesnt matter anyways , filho will beat chael and that will be the last MW matchup the WEC has to offer .i’d like to see kang fight filho ……filho vs lawler or maybe lawler vs kang . there are some good fights ahead for sure .

  • T3chn3tnium says:

lets see my belt or 25% of my earnings… hmmmmm

what an idiot. whatever chance he had getting to UFC is very slim now.. guess the guy likes to eat.

  • Justin says:

    Alfred C.,
The weight class is actually “135″ so him not being able to weigh in at 136 means that he didn’t make it within the allowed 1 lb. over.

    T3chn3tnium,
They have already decided to roll the WEC MWs and LHWs into the UFC, and I think that even though he missed weight in this case, they will still have him. Alves, is still around.

Note to Filho, Jason Guida is an example of how NOT to do it.

  • DBiz says:

I can see 1 or 2 lbs. I can understand it and accept it.

7 lbs, as has been said much more (or maybe less?) eloquently than I ever could, is totally unacceptable. I hope they stick Filho on under cards for a year as punishment. Make him fight scrubs, and pay him like he’s fighting scrubs. A year at 7000 a fight should get the point through his head.

    Hell, I **** 7 lbs some days….

  • T3chn3tnium says:

yeah whats the point of filho coming to ufc MW when he won’t even fight silva?? stupid IMO.

  • FR702 says:

He will never make it to fight Silva let alone he won’t cuz they’re friends and such, perhaps Silva should take his friend under his wing and help clean that kids head

    *side note*

Despite how people here have voted (if they even did) this is a huge day in American history, best of luck to the President Elect Obama

  • DBiz says:

If anyone refuses to fight, for any reason, it should be cause to cut them. I’m sick of this Brazilian thing where they won’t fight each other. Man up and do it. Goddamn pussies. One KJ Noons is enough.

  • Dannyboy says:

Been looking forward to this one for a while. Urijah is incredibe.

    Filho should be ashamed.

  • T3chn3tnium says:

I agree with DBiz. Brazilians are the Master race.. they are the best at whatever the hell they do. In this type of business/sport your gonna run into a fellow countryman and/or friend. just fight it out its only 15-25 mins. then yall can party.. KJ noons should have ran for president..

  • confuctious says:

i cant belive that fil a ho is not being stripped of his belt. zuffa owns wec and im surrprised that danna hasnt dismantled paulo’s character by now.
at his last fight the black dude from espns mma news[whos an complete idiot]said that paulo was a diamond and the best mw in the world, ha. he should be shot for even saying that sh1t.
did anyone find out what he went to rehab for?

  • JOHNBOY says:

eh wtf man it should still be a titel shot that’s well harsh on sonnen, wish faber would bulk up and fight at 155

  • dietrich says:

    On Filho ,
Does anyone think he did it to get away from Zuffa? Sabotage his rep so they drop him and he goes to Affliction or Dream and avoids fighting his
friend and or those nasty drug tests???

  • Justin says:

Interesting thought, but I doubt that is the case.

  • Dietrich says:

I just can’t figure this thing out and it has been a burr in my side for almost a year….When my wife and I were on the plane with Napao last December the first thing I asked him was are you cornering Paulo on Wednesday(12/12/07) and he said “Yes”. The fight day arrives and we are wondering where Gabriel is??? Did something happen in Mass or in the camp?
Then you have the Sonnen “He’s Out” which you have to take with a grain of salt because
1 Everything he said about Paulo before the first fight was an ad hominum
attack so why expect him to be above board then
2 Chael whines a lot (See the Horn fights)

Then you have the “no tap/tap debate”-the weight cutting problem-the rehab story-the steroids question- the friendship bonds-the brutal battery of Bryan Baker-the Hurricane-The big refocused Filho media push and now this rookie mistake with weight cutting after saying something like “The Americans have the better way to cut weight.” He looked almost like he got off Survivor in the interview and he’s that big before a fight. He’s not on The Biggest Loser… there is no legit reason to guzzle a gallon of water before the weigh in so Jillian or Bob’s team will have to vote someone off. I swear I hope its a one punch KO. Don’t care by who I just wanted to hear Mir say”Its over…Your winner…The Soap Opera is over we will have a fight when we return…”

  • Dietrich says:

    @Justin
In case you missed it Royce is in town next week…

  • Chris L. says:

@ FR702 I agree I just question his dedication sometimes.

As for him fighting in the UFC…he’ll get his fights in for sure don’t forget Thiago alves missed badly in a fight with Matt Hughes of all people. Eveyone usually gets one so as long as it doesn’t happen again he will be fine and if Anderson is retiring next year expect Filho to be ready to fill that void.

  • Justin says:

    Dietrich,
What’s he in town for, and where is he going to be?

  • Dirty says:

He should be stripped of his title.
A real champion always makes weight and I couldn’t care less whats going on in his personal life.

  • hamsterwheel says:

It’s not fair to Sonnan that Fihlo didn’t make weigh, and it should be a title fight/ He’s not gonna get another opportunity for a rematch after this one. Fihlo should be penalized on his purse and it should be a title fight,.

  • Chris L. says:

dirty… stripped of what title? After tonight it is defunct anyways.

  • T3chn3tnium says:

I’m sure he gets to keep the belt… just really doesn’t mean anything except that he Was the champion in WeC.

  • Us And Chuck says:

Filho is such a **** how disrespectful first he ducks Silva now he misses weight by 7 pounds send him his P45 ASAP Zuffa.

  • Dietrich says:

    @justin,
    He’s doing a seminar on the 13th I think. 7:30-9:30pm
    http://www.crossfitnc.com

  • Justin says:

Thanks for that Dietrich. Could be something interesting to go to, not sure how open to the public it is. The other problem is, I know for a fact that I will be somewhere else at that exact time.

  • Dietrich says:

    @Justin,
Sorry to hear that. I am trying like all…to get my back/health up to the point I can roll without fear because I have always wanted to train.Last time I drove by to see how big the crowd is for one of those seminars(small) If interested He is here in the state for a couple of days check his website and see if you can catch him at another location….
    Have a Great Day
    Dietrich

  • Justin says:

    Dietrich,
I too am trying to get to a point where I could possibly train some. I don’t think I’d ever want to get to a point of being a fighter, but I would like to train. I’ve got youth on my side, but I’ve got 3+ years of basic inactivity and lack of exercising working against me, but in all reality it wouldn’t take me much. I just don’t want to go into a situation to start training BJJ and get handled regularly because I have no gas tank.

  • Justin says:

BTW according to Royce’s site he will be here the 12th, not the 13th like the crossfit page says. ::shrugs::

  • Dietrich says:

    @Justin,
Not trying to sound like the old guy who thinks he knows it all because believe me the longer you live the more you realize you don’t
but if you are younger and no major injuries(unlike me-knee problems-shoulder problems-back problems…My twenties sound good don’t they) All the rest will take care of itself.
There is this concept/theory about how when a person gives themselves time to think about a project they make it bigger than it actually is. I have done this alot in my life… please learn from my mistake as you will benefit and you will give my experiance a value…

Go to Borders Central Raleigh and Get Rodrigo’s new book The Complete Guide to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and read the first part(Or just read pages 2 and 11) and decide if you want to move forward with it. Then if you still are not sure get a simple 10 minute Yoga-Stretching DVD and Walk and or Run on anything other than concrete for 3 weeks and just go.Just go…life is too short…No matter what you may have read or heard about a school somewhere let me put your mind at ease. I have met instructors and fighters across the country but I have never met a jackass in BJJ….
The Team ROC guys are great people…No Egos…So are the guys at NBS gym check them out.Give it three weeks on the mat and talk to the instructors after that. You may feel like quitting…but at least you will know…

I hope this inspires you and anyone else who reads it to live the Nike slogan!

  • Justin says:

    Dietrich,
Thanks for that. I’ve actually already made some changes in the last month or so to get back into some kind of shape. I was involved in sports going through my school life, but in college and since then I’ve let life and laziness get in the way of pretty much any kind of exercise. I’ve got a list of things I want to do in my lifetime, and training BJJ is on that list. I’m not going to let that be something that I don’t get around to for 10 years, but there are certain other goals that my wife and I have right now that I’ve got my focus on achieving.

  • Dietrich says:

    @Justin,
    I DEFINITELY understand that…11 months in…:)
