Florida Closes EliteXC Investigation, Finds No Wrongdoing

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 24, 2008 at 8:22 am ET12 Comments

EliteXC Heat: Kimbo Slice vs. Seth PetruzelliA preliminary investigation by the Florida State Boxing Commission into the October 4th EliteXC main event between Kimbo Slice and Seth Petruzelli has found no wrongdoing and the case has been closed.

The results of the investigation were released by the commission late Thursday and a full investigation into the matter will not take place.

Accusations of potential fight fixing began to swirl following an appearance by the late-replacement Petruzelli on a radio show in which he stated he was paid to stand up with the knockout artist Slice. Though both Petruzelli and EliteXC management immediately issued statements clarifying Petruzelli’s comments as referring to a standard knockout bonus, the claims picked up steam as other sources seemingly substantiated the claims.

However, the Florida investigation uncovered no evidence of wrongdoings and the case in now closed, though the bout will forever be remembered not only for its shocking finish by the heavy underdog Petruzelli, but also as the nail in EliteXC’s coffin, forcing the promotion to close its doors less than two weeks later.

Translation: “It’s dead Jim. Let’s pack it up and go find some broads.”

Found no wrongdoing my a$$. When they shut it down it was a guilty plea. I am so glad the Shaws are out of business. Maybe Showtime will find a way to start their own promotion.

  • FR702 says:

Right what are they going to do to a organization that no longer is in business, whatever F the Shaw’s

  • RyanMoney says:

I was gonna give my opinion but whats the point. All three of you already took the words from my mouth.

  • Us And Chuck says:

Why will not flog that dead horse ?

If they will not flog that dead horse at least kill the Shaws………

  • oldman420 says:

The only wrong doing in my opinion is trying to convince us that “no slice” was a lgeit martial artist. It just shows that it doesn’t pay to be a douche bag.

  • DBiz says:

EliteXC shutting down is definitely why this ended. In fact, that investigation likely prompted the shutdown before the ShoXC event that was coming up. When you’re already down 60 million, a couple weeks for some big bouts to maybe get some sponsor money in is nothing.

Lawler-Villesenor and Diaz-Alvarez had the potential to do them a lot of good, both financially and in how people viewed their fights. The investigation made them realize that, no matter what it concluded, they were not going to fare well in front of any other state’s commission.

  • KOuch says:

The case was closed because there was an agreement that if the Shaw’s closed down shop the case would go away. I still think the Shaw;s should be in trouble. Like Dana White said, Gary cockmonger Shaw told the LA TIMES, “there is nothing wrong with paying fighters to stand” aside from the fact it is illegal. Bets were being taken and regardless of the outcome the SHAWS were tampering with matches. THAT IS BS! It’s over now but there should be legal trouble. NOTHING WAS FOUND MY ASS! BS! There is that famous quote in the LA f-n TIMES! Seth Petruzelli spewed some interesting comments followed by supporting arguments from ken Shamrock. WTF?!? Send the Shaws to jail.

  • Dannyboy says:

I thought since it was a late comer to the fight that no betting would be honored on the fight? Did they re=open the sports desks in Vegas to account for the late entry?

Sorry coming in on this late.

Timcat you are right…I hope Showtime can put something together. Otherwise, I pay for it just for Dexter and Weeds. :)

  • timcat says:

Dexter is a great show. I watch it every week.
I totally agree with what KOuch and DBiz had to say.
And yes Dannyboy there was betting up to fight time. Kimbo was a huge favorite going in.

  • Dietrich says:

    Good posts Kouch and Dbiz

  • DR.DOOM says:

Maybe that was the deal …… they get everyone to bet on Kimbo , switch the fighter at the last second …everyone thinks buddy still is going down cause noone knows him ….so the shaws place a rather discrete bet thru someone else on the underdog and make a fortune for themselves ….. the old boxing trick bait and switch technique…. then they dont have to run an mma company thats failing .. take the money and run woo hoo hoo
