UFC 73: Sean Sherk vs. Hermes Franca

Champion Sean Sherk defeats Hermes Franca via unanimous decision to retain the UFC Lightweight ChampionshipRound 1: Franca lands a knee to open the fight and follows up with a guillotine choke but Sherk escapes. Sherk controls the fight from the ground for the majority of the round but Franca defends well. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round 10-9 for Sean Sherk.

Round 2: Another knee-guillotine combo by Franca to open the 2nd. Sherk escapes to take control of Franca getting to half guard before Franca gets the dominant position. Sherk takes it back moments later eventually moving to side control. The fighters trade submission attempts with Sherk escaping Franca’s hold as the round ends. Round 3: Sherk takes Franca down hard and controls while Franca maintains guard. The ref spurs the action as the fight stalls. Sherk tries for a submission but to no avail. The round ends. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round 10-9 for Sean Sherk.

Round 4: Franca thinks third time will be the charm and aims at Sherk’s chin with another knee but Sherk takes Franca down yet again. After some action on the ground Franca escapes and is taken down again. Sherk takes side control and throws some shots to the body as the fight slows in the later rounds. Franca has to look for a 5th round stoppage as Sherk takes the fourth round 10-9.

Round 5: Yet another attempt by Franca at a knee but Sherk adapts and takes him to the mat. Sherk escapes several attempted submissions including an attempted knee bar in the slowest round. Should be an easy 50-45 win for Sean Sherk to retain the lightweight title.

The judges score the fight 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46 for Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk to retain the UFC Lightweight Championship defeating Hermes Franca via unanimous decision.

    big f$#@ing deal!!! oooh sherk is strong, ooohh sherk dominated. he did the same thing here he did with the florian fight, he layed on top of the other fighter and did not finish the fight.
    Wrestlers are the worst thing to happen to MMA.

    While I don't think Wrestlers a bad thing for MMA as it is meant to find out what is the best technique I think there are too many fights where the action isn't pressed. The flaw is the scoring system. Fighters can control using wrestling and nothing else and win a fight whereas if a fight was forced to end with KO or submission wrestlers would be forced to do something else.

    The problem is for the UFC to be sanctioned you can't have endless fights while they would actually be the best at eliminating the stalling and point-only techniques we see currently.
