Sherdog has clarified their earlier rumor that B.J. Penn would face Diego Sanchez at UFC 74 and it now appears that “The Prodigy” does not know when his next UFC fight will be or who it will be against.
The news throws out yet another opponent for Sanchez who has been rumored to be fighting at the event since before it was announced. It was originally expected he would be facing Hayato “Mach” Sakurai at UFC 74 but Sakurai has denied the fight. Penn was the second rumored opponent for “Nightmare” but that fight has now been ruled off the August 25th card.
The recent news does state that a fight between both top contenders could happen at a later date although Penn’s plans for the immediate future are still not known. Two likely scenarios that could play out for Penn include him remaining in the lightweight division to take on the lightweight champion (Sean Shek or Hermes Franca) or jumping up to welterweight to face a top contender such as Sanchez, Georges St. Pierre, Josh Koscheck, Matt Serra, or Matt Hughes.
MMAFrenzy.com sources have stated that Sanchez is expected to remain on the UFC 74 card.
