Report: UFC 93 In Dublin, Ireland on January 17th
UFC 93 will take place at the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland on January 17th, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports.
The long-anticipated showdown between former welterweight champions Matt Serra and Matt Hughes will reportedly take place at the January event and Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson may also be added to the fight card, according to MMAJunkie.com.
Chuck Liddell and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua may also appear on the card, though whether they will square off in a featured light heavyweight matchup is not yet known.
UFC 93 will take place on the same day as Affliction’s next event, “Day of Reckoning”, and could ultimately air for free on Spike TV on tape-delay opposite of Affliction’s pay-per-view broadcast.
A January 31st event headlined by Georges St-Pierre vs. BJ Penn will be tentatively-titled UFC 94.
Both UFC 93 and UFC 94 are expected to be officially announced soon.

Thanks Kris. That solves my mystery for the day.
back in the homeland mother****ers!
It will be nice to see Hugues go out with a win
damn, this card sounds pretty stacked. looks like the ufc read some of the complaints you brits had about always seeing the same fighters. i’ll be willing to bet they still try to incorporate bisping somehow, hahaha.
the ufc kickin it into high gear for my bday month nice. but all i kno is if the superbowl saturday one isnt a nasty card i will b severly dissappointed(like i was last year wit big doofy in the main event but luckily the giants made up for it the next day. G-MEN!!!) i remember chuck vs randy 3 on the superbowl weekend. i remember frankie edgar vs tyson griffen on the superbowl card wit anderson silva and the debuts of rampage and cro cop. my point is after last years i want a huge superbowl saturday show.
I wonder what weight class Franklin v. Henderson will be at. Since they both fight at 205 and 185. If its at 205, that gives a slight advantage to Franklin I believe, he’s a more natural 205 than Henderson. I also think that if its at 205, it helps to protect the potential Bisping – Henderson TUF. They’ll be able to say “He lost at light heavyweight, he’s still a contender at middle weight…blah blah”
BTW Kris, I’m liking the new look of things. Although not being able to see the number of comments on a story on the home page I do not like.
Thanks Justin, I’m glad you like it. It’s actually very preliminary and I accidentally rolled it out on accident but I’ll make sure I add the number of comments to the homepage before it’s actually released haha.
I see you changed things back. I’m trying to sort out how to change my Avatar, I forgot where I set that up. IF you go back to the other setup could you get the links or whatever for controlling avatars on here, please.
I loved the new site, keep up the good work as always Kris.
This news just blows Affliction out of the water.
ireland is also a great place to get hammered, might see about a weekend away in ireland, ufc + booze = a very happy johnboy haha
oh yeah! now thats a sic card
spot on johnboy, ireland is buzzing.thats a card to get excited about,be def going to that!about time ufc got a stacked card over here, just hope thay keep the liddell fight on it.
There will be info on adding/changing avatars once the new design launches but if you want to modify it now login at http://www.gravatar.com/ and you can change it ahead of time.
CHUCK VS RUA SOUNDS SICK!
HUGHES VS SERRA I CAN’T WAIT!!
FRANKLIN VS HENDERSON SOUNDS GOOD BUT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE IN EITHER DIVISION
HENDO IS LIKELY 1 W AWAY FROM A TITLE SHOT @ 185, AND IF FRANKLIN BEAT HENDO @ 185, IS THERE GOING TO BE A SILVA VS FRANKLIN 3? DON’T THINK SO.
I THINK IT SHOULD BE
HENDO VS MARQUARDT- WINNER = TITLE SHOT
FRANKLIN VS SOMEONE ELSE @ 205
Thanks Kris, I’ve got that sorted now, and ready to go when you bring that back up. Nothing against anyone on here, but I didn’t want my face plastered all over the site every time I comment. And besides that, I was the only person that had an avatar when they first came up.
I’m with you Jazzkok about the Chuck v. Rua, Hughes v. Serra, and the fact that Franklin v. Henderson doesn’t make much sense. I’d rather see Franklin v. someone else @ 205 like you said. As far as Henderson, I’m not sure who I’d like to see him fight.
You can have multiple Gravatars so one option is add another email address to your Gravatar account then associate a different Gravatar with it. Then use one email to comment on sites you don’t want your face on and another email for sites you want your face on.
If you need more help on figuring out how to do this let me know and I can walk you through it.
First off, I thought the Affliction event was on Jan. 24th not the 17th? Anyway, what ever day it is I hopes its free and stacked.
Problem is that if Hendo is going to be a TUF 9 coach, The UFC won’t want him to fight again before that happens. Hendo should hold fast. Instead of Okami vs. Lister, I think Okami vs. Marquardt would have been a sick fight.
Jason – There really isn’t a set date yet for Affliction’s next show. Originally it was moved to January 17th in Anaheim but recently I’ve been hearing the 24th or another date all together. The 17th is the most credible date I’ve read but when it ultimately ends up taking place is a toss up right now.
dublin is in ireland. so its not “brits” complainin cause we nt in Great Britain!!!!!!!!!!
It’s worth noting that Franklin was reportedly going to fight Liddell or Rua according to the original report but MMA Junkie, who has sources close to Franklin, is reporting it’ll likely be against Hendo.
The biggest question is what weight class this fight takes place at and the UFC could have Henderson vs. Franklin be at 205 then have Henderson fight Bisping at 185 on the finale of TUF 9. Doing this would allow Henderson to remain active in big matchups but still keep his 185 pound matchup with Bisping intact.
No matter what ends up happening this card is shaping up to be very good.
Who knows, the Affliction event might end up taking place in April, or May, based on the way the last one worked out.
Kris,
Thanks again. As I said, I’ve got it sorted now. I had set up that avatar for commenting on some friends’ blogs (I think), but now I have a blog myself, so I just login to wordpress before I go on their blogs. It had just been a while since I set up that avatar, and couldn’t figure out where I’d even set it up.
I do not believe all 3 of these fights will be on one card. And definitely not for free. All UK PPV sell very badly. Who’s paying $45 to watch this fight at home at 3pm on Saturday? No one. Plus there will be football playoff games going on. Tape delay for free on Spike, maybe, but they’d only have one of these fights to headline. Chuck and the Matts would sell 400k+ ppvs easily.
Gonzo,
If in fact the affliction event is held for that day, I can see Dana White having all of those fights free on one card, just to try to run Affliction out of business, if for no other reason. Whenever the announcement is made official we’ll know at least if it will be free or not, and probably the headlining fight.
i’ve been waiting for the hughes serra match 4 a long time , chuck shogun could is going to be bad for one of them , shogun lost last fight by submission (his forte) chuck got KO’d his last fight (his forte) would be a good fight for chuck to show a little more depth though hope he wins though!!
If Dana wants to put Affliction out of business, he should not run this for free. People would just tivo the UFC and pay for Pride. If he makes it PPV many more people will choose one or the other. People wont mind paying 40$ but 80$ for both is a bit much for Joe Sixpack.
DigYourOwnHole,
If I wanted to, I could DVR a PPV just as easily as regular TV, besides having to pay for it. I knew a lot of people that when Affliction ran Banned, were like “Why am I going to pay for that when I can watch the UFC for free?” The other thing is that the UFC event is happening at 3pm EST, most people won’t pay for a PPV at the time (the UFC tried it once, they didn’t do it again) and it seems silly to charge people PPV price to watch something that already happened. You’ll probably be able to find the videos from the UFC event on the internet before they actually air it at 9pm on Spike (if that is what they decide to do) then you’ll probably be able to find the fight videos from Affliction within a few minutes of their conclusion as well.
January is going to be a really great month for the UFC, 17th card wow if Shogun v Liddell, Hendo v Franklin, Matt v Matt com’on really Affliction has nothing on them they could have Fedor v Barnett (which would be awesome i know) yet the UFC will make sure to have a crazy complete card in Ireland (slanje es pora diem) wow, o and wait at the end of the month GSP v BJ Penn “super fight”, ya Affliction the UFC doesnt have to wait 6 full months to put on their next card, they put them on monthly and sometimes twice a month, ehhhh who am i kidding i will buy them all mostlikely ya im going to……..
jazzkoK
one: Hendo needs to win aleat 2 more fight 4 a title shot. He will likly beat franklin fight at 205 or 185 but if not one he beats bisping he will get a title shot. Win or lose at eaither weight franklin will have win another fight to get a shot a either belt.
Bad ass FREE card. SWEET!!!!!!!!!
I’d kinda like to see Hughes choke.
I would like to see Hughes win. Not sure what the out come will actually be. Hughes can win this fight, but it depends on which Matt Hughes shows up. If its the Matt Hughes that dominated the WW division for a time he should win, if its the Matt Hughes that laid eggs in the last couple fights it will probably go to Serra. I just want the fight to be ended, not go to a decision so this animosity can be settled.
still excited about this but after reading all the comments am not sure thay’l keep the 3 fights,if its free in the US a cant see it!
thats england n,ireland and now the republic, just hope its not long til thay come to scotland.
FR702,
UFC 1 Nov. 12, 1993, UFC 2 Mar 11, 1994, UFC 3 Sep. 9, 2004. And that was when there were no other promotions competing for fighters and viewers.
I’m with you, I’ll PPV all of them. I love the sport and I hope they can all make money to stay in business.
I hope one day, the UFC will let their fighters compete in other organizations and vice versa. The UFC has most of the top fighters, so they shouldn’t be worried.
Trying to run Affliction and Elite XC out of business is a waste of time. Where does Dana think its fighters it fired should go? Back to Home Depot to cut plywood? It bought PRIDE, then shut it down. That was a horrible business decision. Just put on great shows, and we’ll buy. There is room for everybody.
Gonzo,
re: I hope one day, the UFC will let their fighters compete in other organizations and vice versa. The UFC has most of the top fighters, so they shouldn’t be worried.
Do you also hope that one day Microsoft will let its engineers work for Apple (while still under contract), and Vice Versa?
Or maybe, since he’s not playing right now, Tampa Bay should let Jeff Garcia go play for the Patriots this weekend, but then whenever they decide Griese(sp?) isn’t good enough anymore they’ll just bring him back.
The point I’m trying to make is this, in business usually you don’t want your talent helping your competition. My wife’s company has a non-compete clause for their employees. Her company’s competitor has an office 30 minutes away, and they are not allowed to go to work for that company for at least 9 months(don’t quote me on the exact number) after leaving her current employer (if they do). Why should the UFC do things any differently, at least in regards to talent that is still under contract fighting in another promotion. Granted, doing the non compete thing after their contract has ended would not be good.
also…just to nit pick a bit, UFC 3 was long before 2004.

apparently Hendo v. Franklin will be at 205, protecting that match up. Didn’t finish reading yet, just wanted to get this up for everyone.
edit – protecting Bisping v. Hendo as coaches at 185… though this is not mentioned in the article, that I have seen.
They will probably keep the rumour going on all of these fights until after a couple of weeks of the tickets being on sale and then start dropping fights until it just a weak main event and filler.
cheers justin just had a look, see thay didnt mention the serra/hughes fight or liddell.hope thay mix up the under card, had enough of davis taylor kelly.
links gone bad, here’s the new one.

Justin, I meant 1994 for UFC 3. Football and MMA are very different. MMA is more like boxing. And you always see promotions working together. That’s what the fans want to see. Not to mention the NFL league minimum for a quarterback is like $1 million a year for 7 months work. Not to mention, Garcia will collect the same, whether he plays or is on the bench. If you don’t fight, you don’t collect.
By the way, my brother-in-law is a computer programmer and he works on contracts, so one year he may work for Microsoft and Oracle the next. He makes a lot more money that way.
Gonzo,
I knew you meant 1994 for UFC 3…like I said, that was nit picking. I do recognize that football and MMA are different, but the fact still remains that the UFC is competing for business with other organizations, in the same way as on football team is competing with others for record, etc.
In regards to your brother-in-law. Yes, one year he may work for Microsoft, and Oracle the next, but he’s not going to be working for Oracle while still under contract to Microsoft.
When it comes to the UFC and other promotions competing, while they may not necessarily be competing head to head, as in having events the same night, they are still competing for advertisers. So, if they let one of their fighters fight for say, Elite XC this saturday night and therefore, that fighter brings ratings in for Elite XC, Company A may look at the ratings/cost of ring space or whatever for the Elite XC event, and then look at ratings/cost of ring space for a UFC event and decide that based on the ratings that the UFC fighter helped generate they choose to sign a multimillion dollar deal with ProElite over UFC. UFC just allowed their fighter to contribute to a loss of their income.
Its also important to keep in mind that the UFC has a stated goal of being THE organization, where if you want to know who the real champion, that has faced the best competition is, you look at who their champion is. Instead of having it like boxing, or the current structure where you have five or six guys that claim to be “Champion of the World”.
Justin,
All great points.
In boxing you have independent companies which have championship belts. UFC’s champions are like WWE champions. They are the company of that organization only. I wish UFC would fight for the WAMMA belts. They have the best fighters anyway.
Eventhough, if you notice, when Dana sent Chuck Liddel to PRIDE, he didn’t do so well. And now some of the best UFC fighters are from PRIDE, not originally UFC. (Rampage, Wanderlei, Shogun, Anderson Silva, etc) So it is good there are other organizations. Share the wealth.
@Gonzo, i do see what you are stating, the UFC has become a different beast since ZUFFA has aquired it (ya i know obvious statement), competition is good in this wonderful thing called MMA, and i know that in business heatlhy competiton is good…. with my business i try to help my competition when they are in need, yet push comes to shove if they were to go to one of my accounts and essentially steal my business, i make it known to them and the customer that im the best option out there…. sometimes all u can sell is customer service and that breeds loyality… perhaps that is what the UFC is doing is trying to show that they are the best option for MMA…. i could be completely wrong.
Gonzo & FR702,
I definitely agree that competition is good, and I’m glad that there are other organizations out there. The UFC product has gotten better, and more frequent, with the rise of these other organizations.
@Justin, quick question, have u noticed that Dana and the Brothers Fertitta have left StrikeForce alone, ie never “took them out”… not that they are crazy competiton but they do put on a good show and do have some awesome talent and i dont believe that Dana has said a harsh word about them, point is that the president of StrikeForce (name escapes me rightnow) has had nothing to say bad about the UFC… do you think that if the Shaws and “Tshirt boy”would have given Dana and ZUFFA respect he wouldnt treat the competiton so “harsh”?
I hadn’t noticed that, but now that you mention it, he only seems to be going after Affliction and ProElite. Shaw has had some personal attacks against Dana, so Dana’s obviously going to go after him where it will hurt him the most, his bank account. With Atencio, he’s had his things to say, but I can see how Dana would be bitter about the fact that he bought the guys shirts, and now he took the money he made off Dana, and is competing with him.
i agree with you on the Shaw’s, and i would also like to add that UFC did help promote Affliction and Atencio through their events, remember when Randy first walked out with a Affliction shirt and people were like thats a cool shirt who makes it, hence some added bitterness… i know TAPOUT promotes shows yet they dont have their own fighting organization to my knowledge
Yeah, TAPOUT doesn’t have their own organization. I think they’re main thing is promoting their fighters, and promoting MMA in general. I doubt they will ever get into the promotion business of actually having their own organization. TAPOUT sometimes takes a similar stance to the UFC, too. The whole “We were here when MMA wasn’t cool, these other guys are riding our coattails,” approach. (not that I’ve ever heard them say those direct words, but it has been implied)
very true, TAPOUT is the first “t shirt” co there was for MMA hey and their stuff is resonable… i have two MMA shirts one TAPOUT and one Warrior Wear… and no im not “that guy” who wears them to bars and is cool like that haha…. the thing is that i believe if Affliction/ProElite played nice, Dana wouldnt pick on them so much and prove his point…
The reason Affliction MMA exists is because Dana had personal issues with Atencio. I only wish I knew the exact details.
Why wouldn’t a smart business man like Dana want Tapout clothing and Affliction clothing to compete against each other to get the best deal for UFC & Zuffa.
Dana takes things personal, and is willing to lose money in the process, irregardless of what’s best for the Fans of UFC and MMA.
You heard it hear, Dana thinks of himself before the fans and supporters of UFC …
I JUST NOTICED THIS IS THE SAME DAY AS AFFLICTION. IF THESE FIGHTS ARE REALLY TRUE I WOULD BUY THESE 3 FIGHTS OVER THE WHOLE AFFLICTION CARD. IF AFFLICTION WAS SMART THEY’D RESCHEDULE “AGAIN” MAN I LOVE DANA HE IS SMART… GOOD BUSINESS
