Robbie Lawler vs. Joey Villasenor Announced For November 8th EliteXC Event
EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler (18-4) will rematch with top 185-pound challenger Joey Villasenor (26-6) in the main event of EliteXC’s November 8th event, which will air on Showtime.
The long-rumored matchup was announced during Friday’s Showtime broadcast of ShoXC “Reis vs. Cullum”, though a location for the event has not yet been announced.
Lawler, a UFC and PRIDE veteran, won the EliteXC title with a third-round technical knockout of Murilo “Ninja” Rua last September. After retaining the title by way of a no contest in his first bout with Scott Smith, Lawler successfully defended the title with a second-round TKO of Smith in July.
Following a 22-second knockout loss to Lawler at PRIDE 32, Villasenor has won four of his last five fights, losing only to former middleweight champion Rua over the span while earning victories over David Loiseau, Riki Fukuda, Ryan Jensen, and most-recently Phil Baroni.
The November 8th event is also slated to include Nick Diaz, Brett Rogers, and Rafael “Feijao†Cavalcante against opponents to-be-determined.

Talk about a weak MW division goodness, Lawler and Ninja and @ time Smith but that’s it Villasenor is ok but should get destroyed but Lawler again imo
Lawler in a rout.

Will last longer than 22 seconds this time , although I see lawler winning either way . Still it will be a good fight to watch due to the “bombs away” styles .
It sounds like nobody is giving Joey V a chance. He is very capable and from a great camp. Greg Jacksons place is known for putting together good game plans and exploiting weakness.
Lawler is too good for Elite…..Just my opinion.
KOuch that is very true, EliteXC has to have the weakest MW division of any major organization oh wait Affliction might take those honors… But UFC doesn’t want him (I guess) soo Robbie is just kinda stuck in limbo, which is sad
I too think he is too good for Elite. I don’t know any of the back story of why he is not in the UFC, but at least he is fighting somewhere, getting a pay check, and getting on TV. I’m not sure how well he would do in the UFC. I think Silva is just as much better than Lawler (or more) as he is better than everyone else in the UFC’s MW division.
Correct Justin yet a Lawler v Hendo, or Bisbing or Maia ect would be rather exciting for better than Lawler v Villasenor imo
Agreed.
I thought Lawler couldn’t cut it with the UFC anymore when he got knocked out by DIAZ. Its great that he’s doing well and he’s an exciting fighter but he wouldnt even be in my top ten in the UFC.
@BFree, I do believe that in most of the “ranking systems” he is in the world wide top ten, but I totally understand what you are getting @
ya i think sherdog has him at 7 or 8 in the world…lawler could cut it ufc i think…i ould love to see lawler/bisping i think that would be good
I can’t remember why he left (or got let go) for the life of me, but when I saw Nick ko Lawler that was an absolute shock to me
oh ya definitly..it’s a perfect example that anyone can accomplish anything and anyone can win in mma
Right
Robbie Lawler is 5-0-1(nc) since his last loss to Jason Mayhem Miller
His last fight in the UFC was a submission loss to Evan Tanner (UFC 50 via triangle choke)
He is 4-3 all time in the UFC
Did some leg work, hahaha
***RANDOM***
@ Kris,
Cage Combat Fighting Championships (CCFC9) “Rumble in the Park II” (I went to the first one Matt Major v Shonie Carter, remember UFCfan haha jk) showing up as vip is Tito Ortiz and Kos (whoopie)
Signed to fight already are::
Casey Olson
Jeremiah Metcalf
David “kid dynamite” Espinosa
Jesse Taylor (cocco the crazy peeing monkey)
November 1st in Fresno,Ca
Have you heard much else or anything of this event? The last one was sold the F out and it was a decent local show
Also what is the possibility of you having coverage on this event in a month (+), thanku and cheers
The UFC is the BIG SHOW. Fighters are going to come, go, come back and go again and again and again and again. Sometimes fighters need to go polish up their skills else where before providing us fans top notch match ups courtesy of the UFC. Jake Shields and Robbie Lawler should both be in the UFC. Guyborg too.
KOuch,
In support of what you said, there have been a lot of fighters that fought in the UFC and did not do well, went away and came back, and are now doing well in the UFC.
@FR702 – If you want coverage of it I’ll get as much coverage as I can. I’ve added it to my list of things to research so I should know more soon.
@ Kris I thank you, the reason for this is simply I don’t know if I will be in the State on that specific date… Soo I would like to check my BlackBerry (if not in town to see it in person) and your website to see what the outcome of the fights are, thank you cheers…
What ever happened to Matt Major?
Good lookin out for events FR. Keep me updated with any info on match ups.
@timcat, Matt Major beat Shonie Carter via decision in a rather unentertaing fight…. Shonie’s gold man panties and the fact that he came out to “SuperFly” as his intro was the most enteraining part of the fight…. i dont think they were prepaired for the heat of the central valley of California imo
@KOuch, forsure i will let you know what ever i know of local shows hell perhaps if the StrikeForce fights do actually happen (nov 21) and the fights in Fresno (nov 1) it will be a fun month…
I like robbies go hard style, but i think hes overated. He hasn’t really been tested yet. Joey, Scott Smith, Frank Trigg..There ok fighters and so is rua, id love to see vitor belfort and robbie lawler. vitor is in the MW division now and his last win was impressive. Itd be a great fight, why did he leave the ufc?
