UFC 74 Now Official

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jun 26, 2007 at 9:00 am ET1 Comment

The UFC has officially announced UFC 74: “Respect”. The event will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Headlining the fight will be a heavyweight title bout between Randy Couture and Gabriel Gonzaga. Couture came out of retirement and defeated then-heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in a 5-round unanimous decision at UFC 68. This fight will be his first title defense of the title.

Gonzaga stunned the world with a high kick to Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic in the main event of UFC 70. The fight, which was for a heavyweight title shot, was expected to be won by the heavily favored Cro Cop but the kick changed the face of the heavyweight division as it will now be the Brazilian Gonzaga who will face “The Natural” on August 25th in Vegas.

In a top contenders matchup Josh Koscheck will face former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre with the winner getting a title shot, likely next spring.

Although the main event and the top contender matchups are all that has been officially announced the rest of the rumored card is also very impressive.  Former heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia is also expected to be on the card as is 19-1 welterweight contender Diego Sanchez.

The event will be broadcast on pay-per-view.

All I can say is GO RANDY! Kos and GSP should be a really good fight, I think it will hold more action than Kos and Diego, St. Pierre should bounce back in good fasion and take Koscheck though. I hope the commisioners reconsider their standing on the Frank Mir/Tim Silvia match, it is still a rematch I am anxious for. Also, where the hell is Brandon Vera?
