Brian StannWEC light heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell will take on former WEC 205-pound champion and Marine Brian Stann at UFC Fight Night 16 “UFC Fights for the Troops” on December 10th at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, according to MMA Weekly.

The news comes just one day after the WEC announced that it would be dropping the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions after their December 3rd event.

The matchup will be the fighter’s third encounter. Stann knocked Cantwell out just 41-seconds into their first meeting but Cantwell exacted his revenge in their first rematch, handing Stann his first loss via second-round TKO at WEC 35 in June to claim the light heavyweight title.

UFC Fight Night 16, which will air live on Spike TV, is also currently slated to feature Josh Koscheck vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida, Mike Swick vs. Jonathan Goulet, Matt Wiman vs. Frank Edgar, Corey Hill vs. Dale Hartt, Ben Saunders vs. Brandon Wolff, Eddie Sanchez vs. Justin McCully, Liugi Fioravanti vs. Brodie Farber, Steve Bruno vs. Luke Cummo, and Nate Loughran vs. Tim Credeur.

I kinda figured these guys were UFN material. They are not ready for the big boys quite yet.

  • Dietrich says:

Yeah its interesting how UFN has developed into a default minor league…

  • Raffy says:

A great fight added to the card.

  • KOuch says:

With the WEC dropping its LHW and MW divisions I see more fight nights happening. The UFC is going to have a new crop of fighters they need to introduce to the fans who are/were unfamiliar with the WEC. UFNs are a great way to introduce new fighters, test their skills and evaluate talent. Didn’t Anderson Silva debut in the UFC against Chris Leben? UFNs may not have the best match ups or most stacked cards but it provides the fans fights for free. You get what you pay for. All I know for sure is Mr. Match Making King Silva can have a lot more fun at his job now.

  • Daddy Lupo says:

I hope I will able to watch this fight, I had a great time watching the rematch of these two.

I think these two fighters a more ready for ufc than we think.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

nice these were the only 2 lhws in WEC i cared to watch

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

also any word on filho cuz thats wat the ufc needs is some good mws i wanna see him vs pahlares

  • Jason says:

They already have a decent fight card and now there adding this fight, man I can’t wait until December. As of this moment, they have 2 free fight nights and one ppv and lets not forget the Nov. ppv, I love the holiday season. The UFC is giving us a lot and I am grateful.

  • Justin says:

Definitely looking like a good card. I agree with KOuch that the UFNs are great for introducing new talent, obviously the fans appreciate it because its free fights, it gives a good environment to test these guys out.

I also feel like it helps to provide a stepping stone for some of these fighters that come from fighting in small venues, they don’t have to immediately go to a 10,000-15,000 person arena on a PPV, they can be in the UFC, and on TV, but in front of 5,000-10,000 live people.

I know that Dana has stated that he has a “vision” for the UFC to be on free TV weekly like boxing was when he was growing up. Its important for us as fans to remember that if he does achieve that goal, we won’t always see the “best cards” but at least we’ll have free mma every week.

  • Joey D says:

it seems to me that the title holders would come in and fight a contender in their class already in the UFC , not match’s against each other.
I wonder if their going to bring most of the guys over, or just let them go?

  • Dr Doom says:

we already know Stann is gonna be hyped up going into the ring . but I have a feeling its gonna work against him and he is headed for a KO loss . Odds are his first attack is a standup exchange and cantwell has the skills to nulify that . Steve will go about the fight the same as before and by the 3rd round we will be looking at the bottom of Stanns feet when he takes a nap on the floor .

  • Surfingk5 says:

Great fight. I like Stann but Cantwell looked really good last fight. This could be trouble for Stann. Should be cool.

    GO CORI HILL!!!

  • B W says:

I would like to see stann vs Houston Alexander.

  • The Gunslinger says:

stann vs houston would end bad for stann

  • timcat says:

not if he takes Alexander to the ground. We all know how it goes for him when he’s off his feet.
No game whatsoever on his back.

  • Ryan Money says:

Yea, Alexander would get owned by even a baby on his back.

… okay, maybe not a baby, but definitely a midget! haha

I look forward to seeing Stann tho.

  • B W says:

Stann vs Alexander would be a war. Why do you think stann would get owned? I think either would have a chance at landing that big ko punch. Alexander’s stand up is ugly as ****. He just his hard as ****. Stann is the better tech boxer and I think stann would win this fight. As we know anything can happen in a fight like this though. Cantwell beats stann again then Silva puts stann and Alexander together for a UFN.

  • The Gunslinger says:

stann will ko cantwell the third time around stann rocked him in fight one and stann just didnt look the same fight two but hell be back to destroy cantwell the third time…i actually could really care less about these fighters…i really dont think any from the wec will be contenders….except maybe filho and sonnen but i will almost guarentee filho doesnt do that good in the ufc…i really think he is overrated he really hasnt fought anyone to good………..franklin,hendo,silva,marquardt,kampmann,lister,quarry and even bisping i think could all beat him and i could see leben kcoking him out to…leben wouldnt get submited and he aint getting ko so i guess well see….and also doug ” the rhino” Marshall i could really care less to see in the ufc because he sucks id rather see kimbo in the ufc than marshall and im serious i strongly dislike doug marshall

  • FR702 says:

@Gunslinger, why all the dislike for Doug Marshall is it personal or is it the way he portrays himself, or is it the flat billed hat just asking….? O how’s training going

  • The Gunslinger says:

its going good thanks for asking…but ya i dont know why i dont like him i guess its just because He lost to brian stann and tim mckenzie and i guess i didnt think he fought to his potential or even tried his hardest in those fights…but it could also be i was just jealous..because that wec gold looks pretty good..when i win a belt some day hopefully….im gonna where it everywhere like tim sylvia did man im gonna go out to eat and wear it and even go to church wearing..thanking jesus for the blessing

  • FR702 says:

@Gun, he is an up and down fighter I guess, I think he “got too big in his head” didn’t think he had to train hard enough or whatever… I rolled with a guy (not him) but in the same studio while he was training for the fight with the gent from Cuba, watching kinda out of my side vision (haha) and I was thinking this guy isn’t training too hard and he has a title defense coming up, what’s with that? But after the first break I guess he re focused and was clearly picking up the pace… He is a nice guy from the times I’ve dealt with him but I don’t know enough of “the man” to pass judgement I guess

U going to have sex with your belt on (once u win it) just like Timmeehh did to? Good to hear training is going good for you

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

fr702 if wat u just said is true i hope they destroyed that belt. and i really hope dana white wouldnt give randy the nasty sloath and fat hooker sex belt. actually now that i think bout it thats probly the reason randy was pissed. the whole thing wit money and being mistreated was a lie for the public really its cuz dana gave him the big doofy sloath and blind 1 legged herpes prostitute sex belt.

  • FR702 says:

    That’s too funny Huerta…
I read perhaps on sherdog back when he won th belt for the first time that is what he did he got drunk or whatever and refused to take it off no matter what…
I also believe they get to keep the belt once they win or maybe the have to defend it once I cannot remember, still that shhhit us typed was funny

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

well that explains it cuz u gotta b pretty drunk to sleep wit the man who SHATTED HIMSELF ON TELEVISION. she was probably so wasted she thought big doof was really chuck liddel. yea ive been an avid tim “doofy lurch” sylvia hater for as long as i can remember.

  • FR702 says:

    LoL haha
You r happy that he has lost 3 of his last 4 huh, that shhiit is still funny

  • The Gunslinger says:

ya rampage said in an interview i saw before his fight with forrest that once you defend the belt once you get to keep it

  • The Gunslinger says:

too bad forrest wont get to keep his title….lets go sugar!……and i think i just threw up remembering the timmahhhh poop pants insident

  • FR702 says:

I won’t count Forrest out ever, Evans is really good but hell how do u count against Griffin….

Poop pants hahahaha ewwwwww no its still a little funny ok a lot funny

  • The Gunslinger says:

i dont but im a rashad fan so hopefully he wins…i just think greg jackson is going to come up with something to stop griffin…he almost always does….there both warriors so i think it will be a good fight

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

im so glad hes 1-3 some people just grind my gears and big doof jackass is one of them. as to forrest and rashad thats a tough one for me. forrest was a great character and one of my favorites on season one. he fell out of my favour with the loss to jardine (i understand it but still i hate cryin) and an uninspiring win against hector ramirez. i doubted him against shogun and rampage and we all kno how that turned out. now wit that said i didnt think rashad had a chance against anyone on the ultimate fighter and after he won it i made a promise i would neva go against him. and he hasnt let me down. so u can see my conundrum wit this fight

  • Justin says:

I think that the Griffin v Evans fight is definitely hard to call because both guys are guys you can’t count out in a fight against anyone. I think it could end up going much the same way Griffin Rampage did, but I do think that Evans has more potential to be explosive than Rampage, as he’s shown it more recently than Rampage has.

  • Champagne says:

did tim sylvia actually crap himself?

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

ill take this one. yes champagne he did. when he fought assuerio sylvia at ultimate fight night 2 or something he shatted himself live on spike tv. now they say he was sick but i believe hes just a big doofy dumbass who doesnt kno not to crap himself

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

    assuerio silva***

  • Champagne says:

hahahaha now i definitely have to watch it again… god that makes me so happy…

  • Johnny Bravo says:

I wonder if Tim the “Maniac” Silvia let out a lil hershey squirt the first time he felt the fist of Fedor come crashing against that giant head of his!
