Philippines UFC Event Likely For Summer 2009
The UFC will likely hold an event in the Philippines in the summer of 2009, according to UFC.com:
A show in the Philippines, the home of boxing superstar and national icon Manny Pacquiao, is a no-brainer for the diehard fight fans of the nation, whom Fertitta describes as having “a deep understanding of the sport.†Summer of 2009 is being projected for the UFC’s initial foray into Southeast Asia, with the plan not only to showcase the company’s established stars, but to also give the event a local flavor.
“It will be a combination of bringing over some of our stars and then hopefully having some local Filipino fighters, and maybe bringing in some of the guys from Japan and South Korea,†said Fertitta, who believes the UFC’s success in the country can be boiled down to a couple key elements.
An open workout in the Philippines featuring former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell drew more than 4,000 fans to the Mall of Asia in Passay City on Sunday.
With the UFC already airing on ABS-CBN in the Philippines, the country’s largest media company, UFC owner Lorenzo Feritta concluded that the UFC is “probably more mainstream in the Philippines than…in the US”.

Ya actually what people don’t know, since most people are uneducated, 70% of the Filipino population speaks fluent English. Their schools are taught in English. People don’t know American history and the fact that the Philippines was part of the U.S. and even offered to become a state like Puerto Rico. You don’t have to be Filipino to know this, I was taught this in school (only filipino in the class), but already knew about it, you just have to had listen in your American History class. The Philippines was bought from the Spanish to be used as a strategic base to defend against Japan during the Spanish-American war. The largest naval battle in history took place in the Philippines. MMA is pretty mainstream in the Philippines, because American television is broadcasted in the Philippines and they copy the Ultimate Fighter Show and have their own fighting league. Pretty much it wouldn’t have been a third world country if a past president Ferdinad Marcus had declare martial law during the 1970’s. The economy was second to Japan prior to him declaring martial law. 5 million Filipinos live here in the U.S. coming here as doctors, nurses and engineers. They have the second highest family median earnings in the U.S., the highest being Indian (India) American. They have the lowest crime rate and lowest poverty rate of any race in the U.S. PINOY PRIDE WORLDWIDE!
