EliteXC Strips KJ Noons of Lightweight Title
KJ Noons has been stripped of the EliteXC lightweight title for refusing to defend the championship against top 160-pound contender Nick Diaz.
“We are stripping KJ of his championship belt for refusing to defend against Diaz,”EliteXC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen said. “It’s a very unfortunate situation but we cannot have belt-holders who refuse to fight the top contenders. We want champions who will fight anyone, anytime, anyplace. That’s the mentality all champions should have.
“I feel very bad for KJ because I like him a lot on a personal level and have always thought he could be a big star. He’s charismatic, has a very exciting fighting style and is a top level fighter. So I’m obviously disappointed that he has chosen to take this stance.
“I don’t understand why he would turn down a chance to be a headliner on CBS on Oct. 4. KJ then turned down the fight again when we offered him a headlining spot on our next SHOWTIME date against Nick. From my view, it is a fight against a top-named opponent in Diaz (someone who beat the No. 1 fighter in the world in his weight class), a fighter KJ has bad blood with and most definitely a fight the fans really wanted to see. It seemed like a great opportunity for KJ to me.
“Personally, I do not think it was a smart career move, but I’m sure he sees it differently. KJ has two more fights remaining on his contract, so we are still looking forward to having him fight for us again soon, but not as our world champion.”
EliteXC will announce a matchup for vacant title in the near future.

nick diaz is gay im sorry he didnt deserve a shot at noons…i hope noons goes to the ufc
i’d like to see nick diaz fight yves edwards now
KJ is weak for not fighting (a champion defends, a champion fights, imo)
And KJ v Diaz wouldn’t headline the Oct 4 show anyways, why would u have a chanpionship bout headline a show when you have Kimbo v Ken Shammy Shamm(sarcasim, plus Sheilds is defending and he is headlining)
EliteXC is run horribly and I don’t believe they have a clue… The only reason a few talented fighters are there (Lawler, Ninja, Diaz, Shields, Alverez, I may have forgotten one or perhaps two) is because the UFC either doesn’t like them ie Diaz or StrikeForce couldn’t pay the enough $$$ when EliteXC goes belly up, the only thing that is going to bother me is I’m not going to have as much of an oppritunity to see Gina……
*Sheilds is defending and he ISN’T headlining*
i thought it was noons management that told him to decline the fight.
Well his (mis) management speaks for him, the contract that he signed with his management team probably states that the managers are able to accept or turn down fights as well… Only problem is now he isn’t the Champ anymore because he or his management turned down a rematch with Diaz, oops who knew?
wow what a dumbass. throws away the biggest fight of his career over some beef involving parents? i wouldve still had a good amount of respect for the guy if lost honorably to Diaz, but apparently he was scared…
this guy won’t ever be in the ufc. Why would Dana want to sign a guy who refused to defend his belt? Poor sportsmanship.
thats just dumb! why was Diaz let go from ufc? weed?
I do find this interesting, In my opinion the best fighters in the world (champion or not) are the guys that will fight anyone with reasonable notice. I would think this would be worse for his career than even failing to make weight as a champ…
I know there was a problem between the Noons family and the Diaz family, but what was it all about?
I agree with Elite for pulling Noons. He should have realized that he was the champ and he had to defend… He must have an entirely different idea about what a champion is and does.
i will b the one to defend noons here. first of all he beat diaz already and although i didnt see it from wat i understand nicks face told the story. 2nd diaz has fought 3 nobodies since then one of which took place outside elitexc. 3rd after the way elitexc brought diaz in to ruin noons win over yves edwards i would tell them to **** off too. listen its clear that elite wants diaz as there lightweight champ and theyll do watever it takes to throw noons under the bus and thats bull**** so just give diaz the belt. im glad noons is standin up to this shady promotion whos startin to become like a corrupt boxin commision wit the way they saved kimbo from josh thompson and now this. also last i checked gomi wasnt the number 1 lightweight in the world and its sad that his arguement is diaz beat the gomi when in reality diaz couldnt lay off the hooka and that win doesnt count doesnt matter. its like rickson gracie sayin hes undefeated in 400 grapplin matches and street fights doesnt count towards ur record doesnt count at all. good job kj stick it to these jerkoffs
and as for y diaz isnt in the ufc “However even after the win and the reassurance that the UFC would give him another fight, Diaz decided to sign with the Gracie Fighting Championships and leave the UFC” so it wasnt the ufc who kicked him out it was diaz who left
what a ****, i dont no why diaz is not in the ufc did he fall out wiv dana i remember he got caught smoking weed is that why? some1 help me out haha
did u read my mind huertarogerhuerta that mes wasn’t there when i posted that haha
Really Good News….:)
Gunslinger,
This is not about Nick. This is about Homo Noons being a bad employee by not following the rules and his orders by acting like a spoiled b!tch. He is/was “apparently the champion” but refused to defend his title against Nick. True champs defend their titles against anyone/anytime/any place. That is how it is suppose to be.
Another thing:
If you are not willing to fight for “it”(whatever that may be) you do not deserve it and it is not yours to keep. I use that rule for pretty much everything in life. If someone comes up to me and demands my wallet, I am willing to fight because I believe it is mine and I deserve it. Weapons make this rule a different question but I think you get my point.
KJ may have just committed career suicide. I cannot imagine antoher top promotion having long term plans with him after he “refused” to defend his title. I am going to stop now….I just think Noons is ****wad with itchy sand aggrivating his thought process. Who cares who his opponent was suppose to be aside from his scared/picky a$$? Is he a fighter? Is he a champion?
No argument here. Defend or your not a champion. Simple as that.
Noons is a complete utter tool.
FFS defend your belt even if Diaz does not deserve a shot in your eyes he is worthy according to Pro Elite and that is what matters.
Noons has really dropped the ball here who is going to employ and trust this guy ?
Who manages Noons is it family? I wonder if this is going to be one of those “the manager did it and I was being mislead” deals…
I think there’s something else going on behind the seens.Because i don’t think he’s scared of nick,he already kicked his ass once. And he must know it’s a bad career move. And even if he don’t think nick deserves a shot because he’s a fu cking re tard like his brother no offense. He should still do what the promotion asks of him.I think he wants out but with 2 fights left on his contract we’ll see.
The Rob, you are right on. Dana and the UFC wouldn’t take Noons. They take the cream of the crop. Noons is now overwith. I thought he was a talented fighter, but he’s no headliner. Unless it was for a Diaz rematch. Being on CBS, may have made him a big star. A lot of fans will watch that night for Kimbo, but every other fighter gains recognition from being part of the show.
Noons, you do not have much of a fighting career left. It’s all down hill from here. You peaked, won a belt, but you didn’t want to play ball. At the end of the day, MMA is a business. If you are not helping make Elite XC money, then it’s time to part ways.
At the end of the day XC just got its second PPV PR machine started.
(Kimbo-Gannon being the first.)
KOuch, dito everything you said. Hate to ride coat tails but I’m too damn tired to ride my own wave right now.
KJ Noons and War Machine must hang out with each other. They were probably both sitting in a (Milk) bar and they were talking… They both decided that they were being mistreated and they would show the powers that be who’s the boss. I guess we all now know who the boss’es are.
War was dumb to not fight because it cost him his position in the UFC. Noons was an idiot for not fighting because it cost him the belt that he wanted so bad. I don’t think either of them thought they could win those matches.
I have said from the begining that this is what they needed to do . KJ did it to himself . he was probably just holding out for more $$ and it screwed him . Most likely taking advice from the old man , bad mistake .
Lets get Diaz vs ishida or josh thomson to fight for the belt ……
First of all, The Elite XC created this dumb weight class because Diaz couldn’t make 155. Then when the fight they set up to give him a title goes off he looses to Noons on a cut.
Now Noons refuses to fight Diaz and it costs him some made up title, I say who cares. The Elite XC is dead and they have no hope of ever catching up with the best run organization the UFC any time soon.
the only good thing elite has ever done. it dont matter how he was or wasn’t treated. he was the champ and he did’nt want to fight the best. bottom line. he will leave and get picked up by another loser organization. the ufc wont just have him!
I understand the “champion fights anyone at anytime” mentality…..but if I beat someone, why would I want to give him another shot when he hasn’t beaten anyone.
When you lose to the title holder you drop back down. You need to work your way back up the contention ladder! So what has Diaz proved? Not too much.
I agree with a lot of people. Elite is a joke. And yeah, they pretty much created the weight class for Diaz. And they wanted Diaz to beat Noons for the title.
I still love how his brother sticks up for while he’s at another promotion! Now that’s advertising……
Ok look I’ve been sitting back and just reading everything said and finally I have to say something. Once there was this heavyweight and he was fighting this guy named Tsuyoshi Kohsaka. He was winning the fight before Kohsaka made an illegal move and cut the Hwt with an elbow. Magically because it was a tournament Kohsaka was advanced. Now I say that to say this(if you don’t already know where I’m going you’re not a real MMA fan), this “young heavyweight” was FEDOR EMELIANENKO. Now was Kohsaka ever considered better than Fedor cause he won by cut? Hell no.
Using that logic Noons is not better than Diaz just because of a cut. So because he won it on a cut a rematch should be a GIVEN. I know there is more to this story but from what I have read and researched Noons has let an argument w/ EliteXC cost him a belt and made himself look like a punk. Even though EliteXC did create that belt for Diaz it does not matter. If you have it you defend it. Do I think he should fight Diaz again…yes no doubt. Winning by a cut proves nothing other that you know how to cut people w/ the edge of your glove(aka the Cro Cop special) or elbows. If what your face looked like after a fight mattered Forrest Griffin would never win a fight.
Finally I will say this KJ may be released or fight out his contract and leave but if you think he won’t end up anywhere else you’re crazy. I could easily see him going to WEC. As for anyone saying that “wildman” is a nobody, you should realize that Denny is no punk. Denny took that fight on short notice and while he has never got that breakthrough win he’s still a formidable test.
Chris L,
Very good post.
I think the bottom line is this:
Noons did not do what he was told by his employer. He refused to do his duties.
At my job(kitchen/bath remodels mostly) I get stuck crawling through small attics and under houses to pull wire. It $uck$! I have to crawl over insulation with dead rats in it, under houses with insects I cannot identify and I get F-ing itchy and sweaty! Then I get the pleasure of removing peoples 15yr old toilets that they have crapped in over 3,000 times! Why do I do it? It’s my job!
I am suppose to. I may have a different career than Noons but one thng is without question…. YOU DO AS YOUR BOSS TELLS YOU! I hope I am a boss one day.
KOuch, that is real life right? These “premaddonas” ie Mr. War Machine, Noons ect don’t get what it takes to make $$$ “in the real world” and have responsibilities… Chris Lytle 4 or 5 kids fights and is a Firefighter he gets “it”, he knows reallife and its ups and downs and how to listen to and respect your boss…
I see the point Chris L is trying to make. I really do not agree, but I do seee it. But as I said earlier…..a loss is a loss. By cuts. By KO. By submission. By throwing the towel. By decision. By whatever. That doesn’t mean anything. It meas that someone lost, and needs to fight some quality opponents to move up that ladder again.
Same here. I know Diaz is a good fighter, but I don’t think that his fights have been with quality opponents of his level or better to guarantee hime his title shot for revenge or whatever against Koons.
Now you guys can say all you want about Koons, and not taking the fight (I don’t like Koons anyways), but at the same time, the way Elite has handled this affair makes them look like the joke they really are……
the truth is though who does EliteXC have that is on Diaz’s level other than Noons?
How can Noons complain about them making up the weight division just for Diaz? He still thought enough of it to fight for the belt.
Noons doesn’t get to decide who he fights. Randy Couture doesn’t even have that right. If Couture can’t pick his opponents at this stage of his career, who in the world is Noons to think he can do that??? Elite said for Noons to fight Diaz… So, he hates Diaz anyway, so fight the guy and beat him up. But therein lies the rub… Noons knows he “won” last time only because of a cut. What if he doesn’t cut him again or what if they don’t stop it if he does cut him? He’d get his skinny little neck choked. No… I understand why Noons wouldn’t be the champion and fight Diaz… I saw Diaz knock out Robbie Lawler and submit Gomi… I wouldn’t want to fight that guy either… Just hand the belt back to them and scurry off somewhere like the rat that you are, KJ.
Like I sais before edie alvarez is an elite xc fighter , him and Diaz could slug it out ……who wins that one ?
I like them both but would give the edge to alvarez for his speed and bang .
Diaz v Alvarez would be a wonderful fight I’m definatly leaning towards Alvarez in hopes as well that Diaz never gets the title that Shaw created for him (160lbs)
But hey Nick has a fight coming up in Japan let’s see how that goes and if he gets that title
Any Brad Paisley fans?… I saw him in concert last night with Jewel and Chuck Wicks. Jewel is a hot looking girl… The show was great too.
FR,
Yeah…you’re right. Anderson Silva is a role model employee. He was told to move up to LHW so the UFC could stick it to Affliction and not only did Silva move up, he destroyed. Great employee. I’m telling you….he’s management material.
Thx KOuch I think Anderson is leading the co in the correct direction I too believe he is uper management material
Damn KOuch ya a bit bored haha atleast watch the last game in Yankee Stadium ever ha
I knew Herb Dean is an MMA fighter, but I didn’t know he was still fighting. He fought last year on July 14 at Cage Rage 22. He lost to Dave Legeno because of an eye injury. He’s 2 and 3 as a pro. My question is would he ever be allowed to referee a fight that involved a fighter that has previously beaten him?
I doubt it, I also heard that after that eye poking incident that he has retire from fighting yet still trains consistantly
Joe Riggs beat him on January 18, 2003. I’m not saying Herb Dean carries a grudge, but if he lost to a guy and felt the guy had cheated or was outside the rules of fair play, could his judgement be slanted?
actually DolfanG I believe that would violate the impartiality that is supposed to be upheld by all officials but I do not believe that there is an actual rule in place for that
He “retired” like so many other atheletes… Favre, for instance?
ChrisL
There should be a rule on it. I’d hate to beat a guy and then have that guy ref a mtach of mine a year or two later… especially if he was pissed off that he lost.
Or Jordan? Or Couture Hahaha
I read that he “retired” from some website I can’t remember spefically which one
FR702
Exactly…
I agree that there should be but usually there are multiple refs at an event and since they rotate officials anyone with any sense would not allow that to happen. Honestly I don’t think it would happen if some sort of bad blood remained, as that would be pretty well documented.
Here’s another Herb Dean question: Is he still officiating in the UFC even after officiating at the Affliction fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia? How did that sit with Dana?
he officiated a match in a few fight cards the UFC has had. Officials are not under contract from a promotion as that would be a conflict of interest. Officials are hired by the athletic commission.
officials are usually in every promotion to be honest. Herb does a lot of different events. Big John pretty much only agreed to do UFC fights so that’s why he was in all of them.
That answers it pretty well… I should have realized that the officials work for the atheletic commision and not the promotion. I just got used to seeing the same guys doing the UFC matches and just didn’t think about it… Thanks Chris for helping me out there.
DolfanG which fighter brought you into MMA? Ie the first fighter you went wow I love this?
Good question… I really don’t have an answer though. I used to wrestle and I had some street fights… then I saw MMA. In 1993 I didn’t know what to make of it, but when I saw it again with the new rules I knew MMA was the sport to watch.
The guy that makes me go “wow” now is BJ Penn. He has power in his punches and his BJJ is the best.
No problem glad to help. It’s honestly what kinda defused the Kimbo-Thompson thing as “conspiracy” because Miraglotta screwed up later in UFC with another early stoppage.
FR702
What about you?… Who did you see that blew you away?… Who’s your favorite now?
That was a good answer
I remember seeing Royce fight in the first UFC and I just thought wow, I guess since then it has just progressd from watching just UFC on to PRIDE/UFC/Rumble on the Rock also local shows from Dan Sevren to Damien Maia I get get enough of this…
Favorite fighters no specific order
Chuck Liddell (great fighter the face of UFC and had beers with him on more than one occasion)
Saku (his battles with the Gracies enough said)
Wanderlei (the way he destroys people and even in his losses brings violence)
Dan Sevren (the Beast the man is just that)
Pat Miletich
Renzo/Royce Gracie
Fedor
Anderson Silva
Hendo
Vitor (man was the Phenom at one point forsure)
Pele (just the history and grace)
BJ Penn
GSP
Evan Tanner (self tought and never give up attitude)
Gumby
Big Nog
The list can go on and on my friend forsure
FR702
You got me thinking back… When I started watching MMA regularly, I would go to work and tell the guys I worked with about it. They kinda listened, but were uninterested. They were still boxing fans. I quit watching boxing. Who cares?… It was frustrating because I really had nobody to talk to about MMA. I kept talking about it anyway… as you can see from the Top Commentators list… Now, the guys I work with are all MMA fans. Nobody watches boxing anymore. It was bound to happen. I can’t take any credit for that. Now I can at least talk about the fights and the fighters at work.
O I remember when nobody knew about it or care, when it couldn’t get sanctioned and in many cases it was illegal now wow and the sport has so much more potential and growth ahead of it imo
All I can say is…
…dont be scared homie.
Ohhhh wait. I guess you are scared.. no its a contract issue. Riiiight.
WAR DIAZ
FR702 im well jelous of u now ide love to have a drink with chuck hes my fav fighter, ive only really been a big fan of mma for the past 2/3 years i used to watch the early shows now and again but never concidered myself a fan, but the fight that changed it all for me was when tim sylvia knocked tra telligman out with that head kick at ufc 54 i was like dammmm i wana get to no more about this sport, ive never trained the sport im just a fat boy who loves to watch it haha.
I’m not sure when it was, but I remember as a kid watching the videos of the first 3 UFC, that we had rented from the video store. We also watched the super fight w/ Shamrock and Gracie. I remember watching some of the ones with Tank Abbot but only vaguely. The problem for me was, at that time we didn’t even have the availability of PPV (we got TV over the air) so we were renting the videos after the fact. Then the video store changed owners, they quit buying the videos, and we sort of forgot about MMA. I started following it a little more just before TUF came out, but that brought me back in, as an adult, and hooked me.
Definitely Royce had that wow factor in the early events, especially me having no real clue what was going on. The Bonnar v Griffin fight was great. There’s a lot of guys that have a wow factor today, and in some cases the fact that I know more adds to that.
War Diaz!
@JohnBoy,Chuck is a really cool guy… I know he got brutally ko’d by Evans and has lost 3 out of 4 fights but as a person he is a calm friendly and really smart… (Plus have u seen the LHW division in the UFC toughtest division in all of MMA rightnow imo).. I hope he comes back strong and hopefully I get to hang out with him before the end of the year
@Justin, it is nice that MMA has had a “re~birth” due to the first season of TUF, and that u came back to the sort a bit before the Griffin Bonnar fight is really cool too… I hate the whole TUF NOOB v Hard Core bs or whatever… Its knowledge and and the appreciation of the sport that we all enjoy, and as u are knowledgable and do have passion for the sport to me that’s all that matters…
Who are your guys fav fighters?
Favorite fighters for me, in no particular order:
Couture, Forrest, Franklin, GSP, W. Silva, A. Silva (even though a part of me doesn’t like the fact that he dominates all the Americans), Chuck, Matt Hughes, BJ, Faber, Spencer Fisher (He’s from NC, gotta throw him in there)
The King is awesome, Anderson Silva dominates everyone rightnow… Matt Hughes I respect for the fighting and title defenses, not so much on some of his attitude that has been displayed as of late
Faber he is awesome I hope soon that he gets an oppritunity to battle with Kid
I understand why people don’t like Matt Hughes. He can be arrogant, but also he is a very blunt person. He often sees things in black in white, and he doesn’t hesitate to tell you which way he sees it. I’m a lot like him in that aspect, and to me if a person is blunt, yeah it comes across as rude but I’d rather someone shoot me straight and let me know how they feel and move on with it than tip toe around the issue.
Its not his bluntness at all I’m similar in that fashion, its his holier than now aspect and his lack of trying to expand his game…. Great champion tho and extremely talented..
I appreciate Matt Hughes for his willingness to talk about his beliefs. That’s cool with me. I don’t see him as “Holier than thou” at all, I just see him trying to be the person that he desires to be.
As far as his game is concerned, he needs to either improve it or retire. He can’t win on wrestling with a little jiu jitsu. He needs to improve his jiu jitsu. I think he could still be a force at WW.
I guess I see things differently from most. I see MMA as a sport. I don’t think you have to be angry or evil to be in MMA. If I was a MMA fighter and my best friend was also a MMA fighter in my own weight class, if he was next on the list for me to fight, I wouldn’t have any problem with that at all. I see no need to be angry to fight… it’s like football or baseball to me… it’s a sport.
I think he’s looking to rehab his knee, fight Matt Serra, then go back to his farm and gym and be done with fighting. After his last fight he said he only had the Serra fight left in him. Maybe if he gets a win there he’ll feel like fighting a little more, but I think he’s disinterested.
I agree with Dolfan about not needing to be angry to fight. I don’t do MMA, but I was in wrestling and Judo when I was younger. In both I had to go against people that I was friends with. In wrestling I even became friends with people through our rivalry if you will. There were other times where I’ve wrestled friends just for fun, granted you’re not getting punched in the face, but still. When it comes to fighting, and really punching somebody, some people can’t do it unless they dislike the person.
Matt Hughes does seem to be disinterested. I guess after the serra fight, we’ll find out what his plans are.
Since we already talked about him, let me just say that I cannot tolerate Matt Serra. I can’t stand that little jerk. Who does he think he is? He talks about other guys as if he’s better than them not only as a fighter, but as a person. he’s better than a lot of people as a fighter, but not as a person. I hope to see him and his little gay boy Pete Sell lose their fights.
I might have him all wrong… but that’s the way I see it.
“Holier than thou” quote implied @ me ok DolfanG, not to get into a theology argument I respect and actually give thanks to people who love their beliefsand/ or faiths and can intellegently express their passion for said belief… The way that his stint on TUF made it out to be is that he was pressuring these young guys into following “his” way, my problem with that is you should respect individual beliefs and not make bible study madatory persay ofcourse I could be completly wrong its been that type of day
Serra seems to be a cocky little guy that if he were to drink one belvadere on the rocks he would go and pick a fight with Brock Lesnar for wearing shoes…. He is a talented fighter but his mouth is ridiculous
We agree on Serra. That’s the way I see that liitle toad too. I remember on TUF when Hughes brought the Bibles in. To me, that was a radical move that I think cost him in his teams eyes, but the study wasn’t mandatory. He even walked up to one guy and told him he didn’t have to read the Bible, but the story he selected was a cool story. So he wasn’t trying to force anything on anybody. That would only alianate everybody.
DolfanG you’re way off on Serra he’s actually a really cool guy, he just talks a lot of crap because that’s what New Yorkers do. Believe me that’s my family too lol.
As far as fighting you do not have to be angry to fight but it really helps. It’s different punching someone than it is grappling with them, I’ve done both.
As best as I can remember, his quote was, “You don’t have to read it if you don’t want to, but it is a cool story.”
I saw Bas Rutten reviewing Liddell’s fight with Evans. He mentioned Liddell’s biggest mistake which he tells his students to never make. He said Liddell got angry and then he started loading up his right hand. He tells his students to never get angry when they fight. Anger causes mistakes… like it did Liddell.
As for Serra, I know a lot of people from New York. I live in southern New York (also called South Florida). We’re up to our eyeballs in New Yorkers down here. But they aren’t as extreme as Serra is. He’s a loud mouth and a jerk. He points out flaws in other people that he has in spades. I can’t stand that guy and I hope to see Hughes knock him out.
The funny part is, I think he has a good sense of humor. He laughed at getting caught with that spinning backfist again. If he just wasn’t as judgemental as he is… like I am right now… maybe… I might feel differently.
I’ve dealt with people from all parts of the country/world that are obnoxious loud mouth jerks. More of them have either been from Boston, New York, or New Jersey. But I’ve also dealt with people from all parts of the country/world that have been great people, including New York. Serra’s attitude is one that definitely gets associated with “the typical New Yorker” but that doesn’t make it okay for him to be a jerk, anymore than someone being from the south making it okay for them to be a racist. (BTW I’ve met just as many people from the north that are racist as I have from the south)
Justin
You took the words right out of my mouth… or out of my keyboard or whatever…
well honestly all I’m saying is I have met Serra and he’s really pretty cool. People forget a lot of what we see is gamesmanship by most of these fighters and not only that but never take anything you see on TV or before a fight at face value. Believe me those are the wonders of good editing.
Anger in a fight is different than needing to not like the guy before. Trust me it makes it ALOT easier to most guys to be able to fight some one they don’t like. However, getting pissed off during the fight because you’re frustrated is one thing and that’s what leads to mistakes. Honestly, saying that about Liddell though is misleading. Liddell has done that in nearly every fight and it’s the guys who have had crisp boxing with solid KO power that have been able to exploit it. Trainers like Greg Jackson (genius of game-planning) and even Ibarra(it’s simple boxing) pick up on stuff like that and know how to train their guys to identify and use it. It goes back to some older fighters like Liddell and Hughes not changing their styles to the evolution of the sport.
Chris
Are you saying that Bas Rutten was wrong about his assessment of Liddell or is he wrong about not getting angry in general?
I realize that what we see on TV is a lot of hype… I’m not talking about that stuff. Times like when Franklin made a guest coach appearance on the show when Serra was fighting to get a title shot on TUF, Serra was VERY disrespectful and had no intention of listening to what Franklin had to say. There’s a lot of times like that. He talked about Matt Hughes being a jerk… I don’t know Matt Hughes, maybe he is a jerk, but they didn’t show that on TV. They did show Serra time after time flapping his gums. He’s a jerk. I hope Hughes knocks him into retirement.
I have no doubt that Serra can be a cool guy… if he likes you. But why does he have to like a person in order to be civil with them? Why can’t he just keep his stupid thoughts to himself?
honestly I think Bas is actually brilliant when it comes to MMA. I just disagree with thinking that liddell was loading his right too long because he was just angry, because he does that in most of his fights. So unless the iceman is fighting on blind anger in every fight(which I do not believe), then it wasn’t anger that had him loading too long. Any striking coach would kill a new fighter if they came in with their hands down like liddell does. He swings wildly and for the fences most of the time which worked for awhile but his chin isn’t what it used to be and those shots he could eat in the past he can’t eat anymore.
As far as anger goes I’m saying there is a difference between being angry and getting fired up. You have to have a little edge before you get in there. To be honest it is a business and it cannot be personal. The business is simple take the guy out before he does you and that means you have to be a little pissy to take care of business. Now after fights you can be cool but before you gotta have that killer instinct. It’s when it becomes just blind rage then you’re in trouble. Bas I believe teaches his guys not to go in a blind rage.
Chris
You seem like a cool guy, but we are polar opposites on this issue. I do not believe you need to be angry at all and if you are, it’s to your detriment. You have to keep a cool head. Liddell got frustrated against Evans and got angery and loaded up too much with that right hand. I know he loads his right and he keeps his hands to low, but in that fight he had that right hand cocked from as far back as he could swing it. He was pissed because of Evans taunts. He blew his cool and forgot about his opponent hitting back. he got mad and forgot about defense. That was Evans plan going in and it worked. Don’t get angry in a fight or you’ll be seeing tweety birds… But I still think you’re a cool guy anyway. A healthy difference of opinion is good.
As fas as what Bas Rutten said goes, he said that Liddell got angry and that cost him the fight. Then he said, “I tell my students all the time to not get angry in the ring.” I guess we’ll have to interpret what he said for ourselves.
well you made your point I made mine, so agreeing to disagree works for me.
The word that got ****ed was c o c k e d
bas tells is like it is man …….. he would also be one hell of a matchmaker .I wasnt sure of him years ago but has proven to me he knows his sh!t.

(Slanje es para diem, and if u get this far in the cheers u cannot pronounce the rest because of too many pint and one more hook)
