Quinton Jackson Preparing For UFC 91 Bout Against Wanderlei Silva With New Camp
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has started to prepare for his rumored matchup against Wanderlei Silva at UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar on November 15th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
According to MMAJunkie.com, Jackson, who lost the 205-pound title to Forrest Griffin in July, has agreed to the matchup, which we first covered earlier this month, and has begun a six-week training camp with UK-based Wolfslair, Jackson’s new team after leaving his previous trainer, Juanito Ibarra, over a reported money dispute.
The UFC has not yet officially announced the fight but is expected to make it official shortly.
UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar features the return of UFC heavyweight champion and hall of famer Randy Couture to the octagon to defend his title against Brock Lesnar in the UFC 91 main event. The rumored card for the pay-per-view event also includes Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson, Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory, Nick Catone vs. Amir Sadollah, Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks, and Jeremy Stephens vs. Rafael dos Anjos.

He better prepare. He better train really hard. If not, what we saw in Pride will happen again. I truly believe that some fighters just have certain guys numbers, and Wanderlei has his.
3 days after my B-Day…… I think I need to go to this….
Florian/Stevenson is a match up I have wanted to see badly for a while now. I think Florian is more well rounded and technical. Stevenson has a lot of experience and with that experience I see him being able to counter a lot of Florian’s attempts to advance. I could see this fight turning into an interesting ground war too. I just love the match up. These two fighting each other gives us a fans a lot to expect , see and get excited for.
Timcat,
I agree. I don’t like this for match for Rampage at all. I know this is different because it is in the cage but I just don’t like it. I am a fan of both fighters but the Axe Murderer has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I just don’t want Rampage to flip out if he loses. I wish he had been given a steeping stone just to get back on track. Maybe his problems have passed though and now he just has his legal battle…..
KOuch, I totally agree with you. He needed a can to get back on track. Most of the time, titleholders or title contenders are given a guy that hasn’t already beat him twice following a loss. Maybe, if he loses this, then Chuck and him will fight….. again.
Wheres Luke Commo and Kimbo Slice they will change the face of mma forever!
I think rampage is really tuff standing up and alot tuffer then the last time he fought the axe murderer. I hope he will come back and make for another super fight like lidell did with wanderlei. if someone can ko wanderlei it would have to be Rampage or Henderson and thats about it. I would be cool to see Anderson fight Wanderlei that would blow my mind to see him ko Wanderlei from percission strikes. My prediction is that if Rampages head is screwed on straight that it should go the distance with both fighters getiing all F@*$&# up. ya
Yes, normally guys are given throwing dummies after losing the title, but I think its better that they get a real fight, better for us anyway. The thing is, this fight gives Rampage, with a win, a good opportunity to face whoever wins between Forrest and Rashad to try to reclaim that belt, with only one fight, instead of two. It also gives Wand a chance to move up, if Wand wasn’t fighting Rampage, who could he fight for that chance…?
MAtt Hughes sucks he should never fight again piece of garbage!
Justin,
Very good point.
I was thninking about something. I may have attacked you the other day for your opinion and I am sorry. I had you mistaken for other persons post and put your name at the top of my message. Anyway, it was not directed at you in anyway. VERY SORRY.
Swick vs Goulet TUF Finale….just read that somewhere
This will be interesting. I hope Rampage comes out well no matter what.
I see rampage winning by decision or silva by t/ko. i think florian will have problems with joey but florian is a true warrior
K0uch,
You may be right about that…but that’s over, so, no worries.
Swick v Goulet would be a good fight. Swick is good, but he looks like he’s fighting too small, I don’t know if its just the way he is built, but it seems like his body would more naturally fit into a higher weight class.
Jackson moving to the wolfslair is a good thing!
Trust me theres nothing glamourous about liverpool! and the wolfslair is at the end of an industrial estate
Liverpool atleast has Gerrard so that’s cool
If the agressive shaved head tattoo sporting crazy Wanderlei comes out he will again destroy Rampage… As far as Rampage should have been handed a can after losing to Forrest well this is LHW division not a whole lot of cans lying around you know Tito is gone now.
Justin,
I was thinking that koshchek would def. fite again before the end of the year, but there’s no sign of him on any of the fight cards. Diago vs Kosh 3?
Does diago get a tittle shot if he beats alves?
I dont understand the philosphy of the match up between wandi and jackson right now. It makes more sense for wandi to fight jackson but not jackson to fight wandi.
If wandi wins he gets a title shot? So he beats jardine and jackson and he gets a title shot?
If jackson wins, where does that leave him? who does he fight next? He’s for sure not in contension of a shot after just one win. On top of that, it ruins any chance of building wandi up.(by building wandi i mean setting him up the right way for a title shot)
I just think there were better ways to get to Wandi vs Jackson. They should’ve had Jackson(Who in my opinion is not mentally ready to fight vs Thiago Silva(when he’s ready fight)
Wandi vs Machida(Machida is ready to fight right now anyways) and than the winner of these two boughts fight each other i.e. wandi vs jackson orrr machida vs silva(which would be monster at that point because of the two wins the just came off + they are both undefeated.
This way, a definitive #1 contender is established.
Any takers?
cornflakes281, you said it all!!!!
I think its possible that the winner of Alves v Sanchez is looking at a title shot against the winner of Penn v St. Pierre, there’s not really anyone else to challenge for the title. I don’t think either of them could win against Penn or St Pierre. I think the next fight for Kos would be Fitch, that’s the only fight that can really move him up the rankings. But I don’t know that they won’t give Fitch an easier fight first.
When Wanderlei beats Rampage again I believe he is still a fight or two away from a title fight…. A loss to Chuck (classic battle) and the destruction of Jardine + a win v Page imo isn’t enough to give him the title shot, yet his legacy might push him forward into the pic….
If somehow Rampage does beat Wand he can then take on either Machida or Thiago even Vera/Jardine and try to move back to regaining the title
Also the LHW picture has a lot riding on Evans v Griffin, when Wanderlei wins he perhaps should fight the loser of that fight to become the #1 contender, after Machida who will be given a shot early next year imo
Kos v Fitch won’t happen as long as they are training partners (if ever)
cornflakes,
In regards to Jackson v W. Silva, Silva has more to gain with a win than Jackson in this fight, but it still presents an interesting match up. The only other fight options for Jackson, b/c of his high ranking could be Machida (which could possibly go much the same way the Machida v Ortiz went), Shogun, T. Silva, or a real “can”. Shogun and T. Silva are coming off injuries so will likely face more beatable opponents. Machida they could be protecting, or they may be worried about a boring fight, like the Ortiz fight. If you put Rampage against a throwing dummy, a win doesn’t gain much more than a w on the record and maybe a little confidence, and a loss could be disaster. I think this is more about giving Wand a chance to move up in ranking than it is about getting Rampage back on track. It also could be about trying to get another Wand v Rampage highlight, but this time with the UFC logo in the youtube video instead of the now defunct Pride.
FR702,
Good point, I didn’t think about that. That means Kos is kind of in no mans land, he can take a fight that could seriously hurt his ranking if he loses, but not really help it if he wins, fight his training partner, or just sit back and wait for things to play out a little more. It looks like he’s on sit back and wait right now.
Justin, well with the BJ v GSP superfight next year and GSP already beaten Kos and Alves essentially being the #2 contender…. what do ya do with him? perhaps Kos v Alves on the same card as BJ v GSP whynot?
im not a Kos fan but perhaps he should fight more often..
Depends on if Alves beats Sanchez. Kos is in a weird position. He’s not likely to fight Fitch, he got owned by St. Pierre, if he fights the Alves v. Sanchez winner and wins (which he could very well do) he destroys a possible title fight. In some ways he is where Rich Franklin was at middleweight, but one thing he has going for him is that he has only lost to St. Pierre once, vs twice for Franklin to Silva, leaving the possibility for a rematch open, but that could have to wait a while, and he has to fight in the mean time.
Justin,
Wandi vs Jackson just doesn’t make much sense to me right NOW, sure it’s a money maker, but match up wise, it doesn’t make sense, Unless of course UFC trying to build up Wandi and abandon Jackson. Um, but IMO i dont think jackson is going to be any walk in the park for Wandi. Since Wandi came to the UFC you can see that he doesent have that power and bulk anymore(cough:roids:cough). He’s still pretty nasty though, NOT gonna lie.
I see Jackson winning this fight for 2 reasons.1- Jackson is a waaaaaaay better fighter than he was than when he fought wandi the last time. and 2- cough:roids:cough).
Jackson wins via ref stopage rnd 2.
i dont see rampage loseing this fight, number 1 reason he got beat by forrest an lost his belt so he guna be p!ssed off no.2 the court case and possability he might go to jail so hes guna be p!ssed off about that and no.3 wandi has beaten him twice so hes guna want revenge so will be p!ssed off about that, wanderlei silva is guna have a very p!ssed off rampage on his hands and i dont think hes guna be able to get out of the 1st round, rampage via power bomb in the 1st haha,
also i think kenny is guna be to strong for joe daddy hes to smart to get caught in a choke and thats joe daddys main finisher,
Swick is going to get a quick KO like he used to. I think this could be his breakout fight at WW. I hope it is, because he has been quite boring of late. ALmost like he lost his power dropping to WW>
ken flo is the man! He’s one of my fav. fighters!! Although as long as BJ holds the tittle Ken flo doesent have a punchers chance even to win.
GO KEN FLO!
Soooo Rampage is pissed off and he is going to ko Wanderlei I guess that’s do able but unlikely imo, he has been STOPPED twice by Wand, u would think he would try and learn from his mistakes and have a better gameplan than just being pissed off
Steroids….. well if u assume that Wand did them I’m going to assume Rampage did them too yet I will agree that in PRIDE there was steroid abuse
And if Page fights like he did against Forrest do u think that he will last past the 2nd round against Wanderlei honestly
hope rampage goes into the fight with a clear head, maybe a new training camps wot he needs. so excited about this fight
This fight depends all on if Rampage is going mentally and physically healthy for this. He still might be scarred about how the forrest fight went and the hit and run incindents. If it goes to the ground i think rampage will be to strong for Wandi. But it will most likely be a stand up brawl. Wandi’s knees will be against Rampage’s haymakers.
Swick/Goullet is a stepping stone for Swick, Goullet has no chin at all, every fight he’s been in he gets dropped. Swick finishes him fast…or quick
I agree, Jackson should do much better in this fight. He is much improved over the other two fights. “Since Wandi came to the UFC you can see that he doesent have that power…” (cough:Jardine:cough). In regards to the roids comment, I don’t know what the standards were in Pride, and I haven’t seen enough make me think they were involved, however, wasn’t Pride, 203, and UFC is 205…roids mean more muscle, mean harder to cut weight for weigh in. Also, roids mean you’re more susceptible to injury, because the muscle tries to grow too fast, you can’t have a dominant run as champion, and win multiple fights in a night with injuries…but again, I haven’t seen enough of his Pride days to make a truly educated call on this one. As far as the match up timing, that’s a tough call I just have to default to the fact that Joe Silva has booked WAY more fights than I have, and seems to have done a pretty good job so far, so I’ll trust his judgment here.
(cough Jardine cough) F~ing priceless….
To my knowledge PRIDE did not test for steroids…. Kerr, Coleman, and Erickson I believe had hinted at one point or another of their use of them at one point during their PRIDE days I could be wrong tho
rampage is not guna have another night like he did against forrest if he does then yeah hes guna get knocked out but thats not guna happen, the two ways i see this fight going are rampage getting the best of early punches an ref stoppage in the 1st or i could see it going like the rampage hendo fight did and rampage getting a decision, and i don’t think the winner of this gets a shot i think the winner of this gets franklin how exciting would one of those matches be!
mannnnnnnnn Stevenson will beat Florian. I like Florian but Stevenson is a killer, he will choke him out.
It’s funny that everyone on here is still going on and on about who deserves this title shot and that title shot… and who’s next in line. Does Rampage deserve a rematch if he beats Wand? Does Wand deserve it after one more victory or should he have to fight Machida? etc.. etc..
Guys… IT DOESN’T MATTER! For F sakes… look at Brock Lesnar. He has 2 UFC fights and is 1 and 1, yet he gets a title shot against Randy Couture???
BJ Penn despite not fighting in the welter weight division for how long gets to move up without even competing and get a shot at GSP’s title???
Do either of those guys deserve these title shots yet!? No friggen’ way!
It’s not about who deserves it anymore. It’s about which two fighters will bring in the most PPV buys and make the UFC the most profit!! Sorry folks. But that’s the way it is.
I would like to see Kos go against the winner of Serra/Hughes… it’s awhile off of course… and after that fight one or both may retire.
drightler,
Agreed on both accounts. I just don’t think that will happen though.
Markus J,
Good point, but there is an excuse with the Lesnar thing, there are so few HWs in the UFC, they don’t have much room to play around anyways. In terms of Lesnar deserving a shot, maybe he hasn’t earned it by winning fights, however there is a very good possibility he will win that fight, so in a sense he still deserves it. Also, one could argue that Randy didn’t deserve a shot at Sylvia, he came out of retirement, with his last fight being a loss and LHW, and immediate had a title shot at HW.
In regards to BJ Penn, at least he is the belt holder at 155….see above comment about Randy’s shot at Sylvia.
mcCrory vs hazlett has fight of the night written all over it, thats the best matchup on the card
I totally disagree Markus. I think the UFC overall does a good job of making people work their way up the ranks and earn their shots. Yes, there are definitely exceptions. Lesner is an exception for the same reason Randy was an exception. Both have entered a heavyweight picture that is clearly the weakest division in the UFC right now. In fact, that is WHY Randy came out of retirement. He felt the heavyweight division was weak and had a somewhat undeserving champion (I don’t recall exactly what he said, but I’m sure it wasn’t quite as blatant as what I just paraphrazed). Both are HUGE draws for UFC fans and bring in a lot of money, and both back it up quite well… and bring attention back to the heavyweight division that hasn’t been there since Silvia and Arlovski fought.
If all the UFC looked at was who brings in the most bucks regardless of whether they were deserving or not, Liddell and Franklin would have already had shots and Penn vs. St Pierre as well as Silva vs. Griffin would already be signed.
I dont see why this is a bad thing for rampage screw fighting somone not as well known as wandi to get another title shot you need to fight top notch guys.. and who care’s if he lost to him twice if he trains hard he will have nothing to worry about.. It depends on what wandi show’s up also.. he looked like garbage vs chuck.. second round tko for RAMPAGE
Man did I get my names messed up on that last post… That’s what I get for trying to type blogs in between my boss peeking in at me!
I meant FRANKLIN vs. Griffin and St Pierre vs. Silva would already be signed.
hey this luke commmo guy does he know that its spelled cummo?
i didn’t see their first 2 fights in PRIDE, so i’m not sure what to expect. i don’t think that wanderlei will fight as technical as forrest did, therefore i think there will be lots of swinging going on. not sure who wins this, but i see an early tko. i’d love to be wrong though, i hope it’s a 3-round war!
First of all… Lucas, shouldn’t you be training instead of posting on a message board? Just kidding, buddy.
I didn’t think Silva looked bad against Liddell. I thought they both looked good. Liddell looked like a different guy against Evans. He got carelewss and he got angry and he got knocked out.
As for Rampage vs. te Ax Murderer, I think Silva might need an ax to win… IF, and it’s a BIG IF, Jackson can focus on his training and focus on his fight through his court case and throgh changing camps.
kelvin,
They’re on youtube, just do a search.
rampage should have got rich instead of wandi…gives him a NAME that he would be favored to beat, and at the same time it could be (i dont know how) franklins fast track to a CHANCE at title contention
I think Rampage can do it if his mind is in the right place,
Rampage has come along way from the last time,
I think Rampage needs to take Silva to the ground and GnP him out, because Silva is to fast on his feet for Rampage.
Im going for Rampage for this one
cool its official rampage better be ready i think sincehe lost twice to him already i think wanderlei is going to win
Silva has good ground defence.
Rampage is gonna be in trouble.
Everyone’s gonna be in trouble if arona comes to the UFC, this guy WILL beat AS.
Silva will win. I hate to say it. Rampage fan but Silva will win. He’s due.
