According to German site groundandpound.de Cheick Kongo has confirmed he will be facing Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic on September 8th at UFC 75 in London. Here is a rough translation from the report:
“According to internet rumors there will be a European duel between the Croat Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and the Frenchman Cheick Kongo at UFC 75 in England in September. Kongo confirmed the fight against the Pride Grand Prix world champion. “It is true” read the short and simple response on whether he would be facing “Cro Cop” at UFC 75 in England”
Prior to UFC 70, which was also in England, Filipovic had been on a tear winning 13 fights while dropping just 2. His then 5 fight win streak came to a shocking end when a high kick from submission artist Gabriel Gonzaga dropped him to the mat and sending Gonzaga to a UFC 74 title fight with UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture.
Kongo has defeated 3 of his 4 octagon opponents. He posted wins over Gilbert Aldana and Christian Wellisch before losing to Carmelo Marrero at UFC 64 last October. His last fight was a rather uneventful majority decision at UFC 70 over Assuerio Silva.
This fight is an obvious attempt by the UFC to add more European flavor to a card that is headlined by a fight between two Americans: DanHenderson and Quinton Rampage Jackson. The fight also pits two good fighters against each other with one coming off of a shocking loss while the other is seen on his way up the division after coming out victorious at UFC 70.
It should be noted that rumors have appeared on foreign MMA sites that have not come true although if this rumor did in fact originate with Kongo it lends credibility to the report.
