Injured “Babalu” Withdraws From Strikeforce at the Mansion 2
UFC veteran Renato “Babalu” Sobral has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Anthony Ruiz at Strikeforce at the Mansion 2 after sustaining a leg injury.
MMAJunkie.com confirmed the injury late-Tuesday with Strikeforce’s Mike Afromowitz.
A replacement has not yet been named and no timetable for the former light heavyweight challenger’s return has yet been determined.
Sobral was originally to challenge Bobby Southworth for the Strikeforce light heavyweight title but Southworth was forced off the card due to a knee injury and replaced by Ruiz.
Now Strikeforce will seek a replacement for “Babalu”, who had been the largest draw on a card that once held promise with two title fights featuring Southworth and lightweight champion Josh Thomson but now features an underwhelming main event featuring UFC veteran Joe Riggs against PRIDE vet Kazuo Misaki that is joined by matchups with little to no starpower.
Strikeforce at the Mansion 2 takes place on September 19th at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California and will be streamed live on Sherdog.com.

The fact that this fight card is taking place at the Playboy mansion is the only thing saving this card. The match ups are mediocre and everything keeps going wrong.
They need to get a new crop of fighters … the old ones keep breaking!! Hears an idea hmmmm maybe hold up on the extreme training . I watched some mma guys train and they take it too far . Sparring in the cage is different than boxing sparring and really does a number on your body . I understand the importance of conditioning but there is over doing it .
EVERYONE!!!! COOLEST NEWS EVER NEXT TO MIDGETS COMING TO MMA!!!!
URIJAH FABER has said he’d like to move up to LW for the super fights to fight Tyson Griffin to avenge his loss. He also said there are other fights at LW he would like to have. Later on down the road Faber mentioned he would also like to drop to 135lbs!!! THIS GUY IS GREAT!
DR. DOOM,
How do they take training too far? Why the boxing comparison?
Maybe they need to get the playmates out there and let them go at it. What a snoozefest this is going to be.
Who else is as tired of this stuff as I am?
How do they over do it and how would I know are two good questions .first , even though the fighters are just sparring ,the constant stress is being placed on the body even though it’s not full force .As an example – Try jumping rope for 45 mins straight then sit down for an hour , followed by a nice easy walk . You will notice strain in your muscles and joints . And before you say “well they do it all the time ” understand that the athlete becomes accustomed to the stress limiting discomfort yet it still is a physical strain . The second part – I competed in many sports over the years and trained in a hundred different ways . now that I am 36 my knees and joints have taken a pounding , although my own personal health is that of a 25 year old .Nothing the occasional motrin wont help and living in AZ doesnt hurt with the heat .
so you’re saying they shouldnt be training in the cage, and they should be training in a boxing ring?
im sorry but i do not agree with that in anyway…
cage training is a very important technique to employ since the venue itself is in a cage… perhaps the fighters are training to hard, but that wouldnt make a difference where they train cage or no cage…
also look at those fighters who in the past have not done cage training, and only focused on boxing for sparing… chucks first fight, cro cop’s loss… etc etc
in my jiujitsu dojo we train against the wall half of the time to help simulate being against a cage, with out such training you wont be properly prepared to be against the cage…
further more… if fighters only train at 50% then they wont be 100% ready to step into that cage… i dont think they should train at 100% all the time, but giving it your all while training is also needed…
for ex, the local fight nights we have here are 3,5min rounds with 2min rest inbetween rounds, we train our guys by doing 5 sets of 3, 5 min rounds with 1 min rest inbetween each set, by doing this the guys are barfing at the end of the night but after doing this for a few weeks the guys are still ready to rock after 15min of giving it, so when they step into the cage they are conditioned for more than 15min of fighting…
while we do those sets we are focusing on one aspect, be it take downs off/def, against the wall, on the ground side, mount, gaurd etc etc etc… we dont work on striking during this time( there is a seperate trainer for strikes) we also dont dish out all of our power, we are friends…
most injuries that happen during training are total accidents… if injuries happen due to over training it is the trainers fault, not the fighters… but at the same time, the trainer is just getting the fighter as ready as they can be, they have to push it to the limit because if they dont the fighter may not know the limit and that can cause a loss
all fights are won or loss months before they enter the cage
Ever heard of exhaustion ? It takes a certain physical build to truly endure such workouts . not everyone who trains in such a manner get the benefits of the work . i saw a guy who went to the big bear camp , trained his ass off ,and got absolutely crushed in his fight . so you can train all you want but if you dont have the natural ability to fight then you end up on the losing end .And trying to hard will leave you flat for the fight .Its called over training in boxing and the same applies here . even though the training has intensified for mma to get ahead , they get the same result in the end due to over planning .”Gee we were practicing take down defense all camp ,just didnt expect the stand up game” has been heard a few times now after loses .I am not saying that you shouldnt train altogether , just ease up on he intensity of some of the aspects . if you dont know how to do takedowns and submissions then wtf are you doing in there to begin with ?
I can’t stand Babalu and I’m glad the UFC canned him. Who was it that he choked out and wouldn’t let go of (poor memory)?… That was a pretty poor showing by this clown. He deserved to be fired. Good ridence to him. Now he’s hurt?… Oh well… reap what you sew, Babalu.
The only thing worse than doing it was admitting it on camera.
