Wanderlei Silva Training with Randy Couture

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jun 10, 2007 at 8:20 am ET6 Comments

According to sources former Pride Middleweight Champion Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva has been training in recent weeks with Randy Couture. Several weeks ago following Chuck Liddell’s loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson it was announced that Silva would face the former light heavyweight later this year in a match that has been rumored by the UFC itself for some time.

Silva debuted in the UFC in 1998 suffering a quick TKO loss to Vitor Belfort. He rebounded at UFC 20 with a win over Tony Petarra. His last UFC fight was against Tito Ortiz for the vacant light heavyweight title. Silva lost the fight by unanimous decision. After the loss Silva went to Pride eventually winning the middleweight title before losing it to Dan Henderson in his last MMA fight.

Although pure speculation, it appears that Couture is recently making a habit of training with Chuck Liddell’s opponents. Silva is the second opponent Couture has trainined with after he and “Rampage” reportedly trained briefly together prior to UFC 71 where Jackson went on to defeat Liddell in the first round.

There is likely nothing more to this than coincidence although our sources have stated that Couture is likely to continue training with Silva in some capacity.

I’m still surprised the UFC is giving Chuck such a tough opponent for his next fight after coming off of a loss. However, I am glad to see the UFC not giving Chuck a scrub.

I see Wanderlei coming out swinging for the fences catching Chuck.

It will be interesting to see the UFC’s reaction if Chuck suffers 2 loses in a row.

I don’t think I am surprised just because they announced this fight so long ago and they can finally make it happen. It is going to be a great fight I hope but its hard to imagine Chuck losing 2 in a row so I think he will win this to hopefully get another title shot.

I am not sure what the UFC will do with a Liddell loss but it will be interesting for sure.

I agree it’s the fight we have been waiting for years now. I’m excited, I just hope it’s this year. I’m thinking the New Years card. That’s if Wanderlei decides to come back then.

I have a feeling Dana is going to pull out his check book big time to get this fight hurried.

P.S. Thanks for the first comment. My little blog is something for my personal enjoyment. It would be nice to get something going like your site.

I am thinking it might headline UFC 76 in NJ actually. With 75 being the ‘Page vs. Hendo along with Cro Cop and Bisping as well this might be a good fight to headline a midsize card in October/November. It could be pushed to Dec. but I think they will put a title on that card to bump up the 2007 buys.

Earlier is better. I just remember a lot of news on how Wanderlei is taking the year off. But like I said, Dana is going to pull out that check book. If Wanderlei does take the year off, I see Chuck fighting before the end of this year.

  • Hmm. Seems like Randy has a chip on his shoulder. Maybe he’s concerned about Chuck going up a class and taking his belt.

If they both win their next fights, it will be interesting. Dana did say a re-match with Rampage was a long way off,
