WEC 36 Postponed Until November
World Extreme Cagefighting’s WEC 36 event scheduled for this Wednesday, September 10th, in Hollywood, Florida has been postponed until November 5th due to Hurricane Ike.
The event was to take place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and air live on Versus.
The decision to postpone the event was announced earlier this evening.
Hurricane Ike, currently a category 3 storm, is expected to make landfall in Florida on Tuesday as a major hurricane and progress across the state on Wednesday.
“Due to the potential of a major hurricane hitting the South Florida area on Wednesday we were compelled to postpone the event,†said WEC Vice President of Operations and Production Peter Dropick. “For the safety of our fans, the fighters and our staff we felt it was in the best interest to make this decision.â€
“With Hurricane Ike approaching our area we have concern for the fans, fighters, our employees and the South Florida community in general,†said Bernie Dillon, Sr. Vice President of Entertainment for the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. “We felt like it would be prudent and in everyone’s best interest to postpone the event. We certainly don’t want to cause any travelers or employees to get stranded here should we have a major storm.â€
WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber takes on Mike Brown in the WEC 36 main event for the 145-pound championship and WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho rematches with Chael Sonnen for the 185-pound title.
Tickets purchased for the September 10th date remain valid for November 5th with refunds are available at the point of purchase for fans that are unable to attend the rescheduled date.

Yeah it looked like the storm was going to slide by and then the news broke.Its been a crazy crazy month and we really needed the vacation.I don’t know if I should turn in the tickets for the refund. Vengeance is on 9/27 in NC but I really don’t know if its worth the drive. Kind of thinking about driving to UFN if its not sold out. Its crazy I know but I know the drive. And then there is saving for a November trip to Vegas…

I thought they would probably do this. The problem is the storm could turn even after it passes Florida and come right back at us… it probably won’t, but it could. A small hurricane, a cat 1 or small cat 2, no big deal, but a cat 3 is a bad storm and a cat 4 is an absolute killer. Believe me, if a cat 3 were to hit here, you wouldn’t want to be here. Forget about a cat 4!
Here’s the latest guess from the hurricane center: The think Ike will be a Florida event. They expect Ike to slide by the bottom of Florida possibly eeven missing the Keys all together. As it passes by Florida, a trough from the west will direct Ike back toward Florida around Tamps or Gainesville. Once Ike hits the warm water from the Gulf, it should strengthen and that would make it a real monster if it hits Tampa or Gainesville. If that’s the scenerio, my heart goes out to those people. That’s gonna suck. Everything will get torn up… no power… flooded streets… no gasoline… everything closed… hot, humid and no AC. I’ve lived it numerous times and don’t want to live it anymore.

As far as the date moving, that sucks Karo’s disturbing spinal fluid to the fullest. I was going to say “safety first” but these are fighters willing to beat the **** out of each other and have the same done to them. Then again, a hurricane can be much more powerful than a fighter…I guess…..Safety first…..I hate that rule but through trial and error it has proved to be a good way to live.
The problem with having the fight on Wednesday is the hurricane is thought to be on target to hit Tampa on Thursday. It could go anywhere. The worst case would be if the Hrd Rock was full of people to see the fight and then a twister spawned by Ike hit the place… or with a crowd on the way to the Hard Rock or on their way home… We had Tropical Storm Fay pass through here a month ago and that little storm spawned a tornado that tore up several stables in Wellington and part of Wellington.

The seat reference was for Omaha…Seats at the Hard Rock in Vegas are great! I was listing as a mental exercise for dealing with it(WEC problem) and my wife(getaway canceled) and Hannah here in Raleigh. We, as a town got by easy but we, as a household have to fix the roof(which is 4yrs old—thanks LOWES) and I had a showing today.We really needed to see Chael get his arse handed to him but we had to settle for Vin Diesel’s movie(which is about 1k times better than Nic Cage’s)
The layout for Hard Rock Florida kind of looks like a smaller college BBall arena.Are seats there weren’t ringside of course but it would have been fun…

Anecdote… I have been getting plenty of canceled messages about the event. In them they talk about a Press conf on Monday that they also shut down.??? They never announced it on the website.They announced the Q&A with Condit on Tues but not the Press Conf or the weigh ins for that matter. The WEC needs to work on getting their media stuff out alittle better.
It would be nice if we could get Torres or Condit in a title defense on this card now that its been moved back as an apology to the fans…
Of course the vacation is here and there are no fights on the calendar.Anybody know where Tank drinks at?
