Injured Thiago Silva Withdraws From UFC 89 Matchup Against Lyoto Machida
Thiago Silva (13-0) has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled light heavyweight bout against Lyoto Machida (13-0) at UFC 89 after suffering a back injury while training for the fight.
Sherdog on Friday confirmed the injury with an American Top Team representative.
He is expected to be ready to return to the octagon in December.
Silva has earned stoppage victories over James Irvin, Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander, and Antonio Mendes in his four UFC appearances.
Machida has won all five of his bouts in the UFC including recent wins over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz.
No replacement for Silva has yet been named, though MMAFrenzy.com will pass along Machida’s new opponent when it becomes available.

that would’ve been a good fight, machida would win though.
BONNAR SHOULD STEP IN…THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD FIGHT…HOPEFULLY THEY DONT PULL MACHIDA FROM THE EVENT…I AM POSITIVE DANA WILL FIND A REPLACEMENT!!!!!
I am glad, cause i didnt want 2 of my fav fighter like these 2 fighting each other
not too many people want to fight machida my friend, even former and current lhw champ didnt want to fight him. he has a style that many dont know how to nullify
come on man…its not like this guy is anderson silva…someone is sure to step him and fight him..
anderson silva is the only guy in UFC that can take on Lyoto and not look like a dumbass. maybe liddell could take him or randy or somethin I dunno… but lyoto is a supreme badass and it would take sooo much to stop him
step *in
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! i was realy looking forward to this fight. both 13-0 to prove whos better be good fight i think lyoto is more skill fighter than alot of guys but he lack the skill of finishing people
Is there another posibilty besides bonnar? Like i said, i don’t care as long as whoeever they match up machida with beat’s his ass. I don’t want to see machida tap, i want to see him dreamin!
i dont know i dont think bonnar has doeserve that fight but i would think maybe…. wandy but it says he maybe got a fight at 91 but i would like wandy to fight him i ccant rall think of anyone else
i said bonnar because every other lhw was already scheduled…bonnar is the only available fighter who is almost worthy enough to fight machida…bonnar is on a winning streak i think he is deserving…he has just been out of action for a while…it could make a good fight…
I don’t consider somebody who runs away in a fight a supreme bad ass. Tactical maybe, but when you win 75% of your fights by decision who the hell wants to watch you fight, the guy is undercard material as far as i’m concerned. He’s the type of fight that you get up to go have a piss and get another beer. I sure hope we don’t see that piece of trash fight for a title any time soon, and you can tell that dana white is hoping the same because just like he said, he wants to put on fights that people wanna see, and I don’t know about you guys but I don’t like watching this guy fight very much.
del i agree…i do not get why people think machida is one of the most dominant fighters…he just runs away from his opponents…and as far as im concerned has not really proved that he can finish a fight…and as a matter of fact he hasn’t even fought against a worthy opponent…he has not beat one top contender in the lhw division…so i am not sold on him!!
For those who don’t know, Machida already owns a TKO win over Bonnar in 2003. Bonnar is unlikely to want a rematch. Machida is also the only guy besides Anderson Silva to have ever TKO’d Rich Franklin. He also has a win over BJ Penn (even though he BJ is obviously a smaller guy.) He not only beat Tito, but made him look unskilled and amateurish (aside from the last-minute submission defense.) For those of us who care about technical proficiency and skill as much as excitement in MMA, Machida is a very interesting and entertaining fighter. I was definitely looking forward to the Machida/Silva fight. This is really too bad. More than likely the UFC will haul in some no-name to feed to the dragon. I just hope the curse of Bedlam hasn’t returned. Maybe no one wants to fight in England
Well this ****ing suck.
I like the idea of Bonnar.
James Irvin, Irvin, Irvin, HA, not really.
dang i wanted to see machida destroy silva
also rhymeskill 16 or what ever…..im pretty shure sokodjou is a top ten lhw you idiot…think before you talk
Sucks and blows like IKE…
this sucks!! was looking foward to seeing someone beat Lyoto
Rhymes
The only difference I would make to your list is Jardine. That chump has the ability, but he gets knocked out by guys that should not be knocking him out and then he’ll knock out somebody that he shouldn’t be able to knock out. He lacks consistency. I’m not sold on that guy at all.
I know machida beat some big names, but so did tim silvia and I don’t see anybody running to get his ****in autograph. Mburtoni, if you like watching this guy than you probably enjoy watching paint dry because thats about how exciting it is, for myself I would rather watch a high school fight other than Machida. I would rather watch old wrestlemanias to be perfectly honest with you
i agree del…
i apologize to evry1 for gettin heated…but slinger really got under my skin…
but machida has not proved himself…a win over tito n sok is nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was really looking forward to this fight. I hate Machida, he runs like Kalib Starnes but gets the shaft. I wanted Thiago to knock his little ass out. Bonnar might do pretty good against him if they fought. Can’t wait to see Machida get killed by someone.
i agree angelo!!!!!!!
Tell ya what guys … The whole thing is a crap shoot as far as hooking these guys up . Nobody likes to lose and if they wanna stay in contention sometimes a guy has to “pass” on certain fights in order to get to the top . But since this is not allowed in the UFC the best way to get out of a bad matchup is injury .The problem is the fans are the ones who get crapped on when our hopes of good fights go down the drain due to cold feet . just shut the f#ck up , get in the ring/cage and do your best . if you dont win oh well train a bit harder and watch the replay .
Guttered! I really wanted to see this fight. Im going to be there and was routing for Silva.
To be perfectly honest, I’ve seen both of these guys fight and I can’t remember anything about either one of them. Is that saying something good or bad about them? I don’t know.
Maybe a good match-up for Machida would be Ortiz. We might find out where both of those guys are.
Did they fight already?… Man this guy is like a ghost…
I don’t know for sure, but Machida looks like he might be a real contender. Franklin has lost only 3 times. 2 to Silva and once to Machida. Machida has beaten Vernon White, Tito, Sokoudjou, Bonner, Franklin, and Hoger. That’s quite a record. I’m gonna have to start paying attention to this guy. I saw him fight Sokoudjou and he dominated that fight. I don’t remember seeing the Tito fight…
he is good obviously he has alot of respect and ablilty because wandi wouldnt fight him on a two and a half months notice and he has always been one of the best in the world i still think he deserves a title shot after he destroys whoever they throw in front of him
tito looked like a red headed step child
Man i was looking foward to watching this fight at the NIA next month this was the match i was really looking foward to
I would love to see Rampage step in (There is more chance of Cote of beating Silva) but who is availble apart from Wandi & Rampage ?
Angelo,
Coming this fall…… Dancing With The Stars:
Kalib Starnes and Lyoto Machida DYNAMIC DUO destine to win it all.
ha ha ha, good one kouch
OK… I just looked at part of the Machida-Ortiz fight. I remember it now. I hated it. Machida ran away and kicked at Ortiz. I didn’t enjoy watching this fight at all. Not entertaining. I want to see the fighters engage not play tag. I hope Machida doesn’t get a title shot. Not good… not good… Not good for Ortiz… Not good for Machida… Not good for the UFC… I was not impressed with his performance
i agree dol…machida is a boring fighter…this guy runs more then floyd mayweather!!!!
I respect Machida as a martial artist. I dont respect him as a fighter. Theres a difference between hit and move and hit and run.
Skiller fighters hit and move. Lyoto hits and runs. Machida isnt a ‘fighter’ in my opinion. Hes just awesome at points karate.
*skilled
Machida runs more than Usain Bolt.
He would win any bar fight, but as a professional fighter, he’s a pretty good runner… I seldom say this about a fighter because to get in the ring you have to have some courage, but this guy is BORING even when he wins. No wonder I didn’t remember him earlier… he’s very fogetable.
“Mburtoni, if you like watching this guy than you probably enjoy watching paint dry because thats about how exciting it is, for myself I would rather watch a high school fight other than Machida. I would rather watch old wrestlemanias to be perfectly honest with you.”
I don’t find him boring Del. I find him extremely technically proficient and captivating to watch, as do many serious MMA fans. Enjoy watching Hulk Hogan destroy Earthquake.
mburtoni, he’s your guy… that’s good and fine, but being technical just ain’t enough. I’m not interested in watching a mathematician solve a math problem as technical as he may be… Machida is a runner, not a fighter.
But, he’s your guy and that’s cool with me…
I definetly will Mburtoni, thats a good quote too. And you sir have fun watching machida run laps around the octagon, you should start an ‘I love lyoto machida group on facebook’ bet lots of people would join. But all the power to ya, it takes a real SPECIAL person to be one of his fans. I’m trying to keep this short for you as well just in case you feel the need to type it all out again
Some say it’s running, some say it’s tactical. These fighters just have to remember that, not only are they there to win, but they’re in the Octagon to put on a good show. When you care about “pleasing your boss” over winning the fight, you have to make a decision, I guess.
However, keep in mind that technicality is important. Using the whole octagon is part of a strategy, as boring as it might be.
well i thought that was good beating tito! =) and ya hes not the most exciting figter but it isnt as excitiing as watching paint dry.
and now i have it since wanderlei is hopfully gonna fight rampage at ufc 91 then i would like machida to fight at ufc 91 with rua! then the card would be perfect with awesome fights!
Josh, I think you hit the nail on the head. Being a good technical fighter is all good, you won’t win without some technique, but if you fight like Machida, not many people will see it because not many people will want to watch. I watched his last 2 fights at least and I couldn’t even remember the guy. The fights are held as entertainment and that has to be a prime consideration as a part of a fighter’s technique.
ya hes ok to me i like him to fight but not as top guy i think he should learn more then karate the only submission ive seen him do is arm triangle
Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wanted to see this fight
I wonder who will step up and fight Machida
Machida-Liddell would be interesting in that the fans could see if Chuck could overcome his timing issue and No one wants to watch Machida
Machida Hammil could give Machida Highlight reel stuff
A rematch with Franklin????
Anybody see the first fight with Penn. I wonder if Penn still thinks he could beat him?
Opinions…Any other fights…
Watch Machida highlights on youtube.. he does what it takes to win. isn’t that the objective? if you don’t like his fights then you probably don’t understand the art of fighting.. silva backed out just like karo.. don’t blame him
there is only one guy who would be great to jump on the opportunity, his name is quin jackson, he lost to forrest, if he wanna get a title fight again how about fighting lyoto machida first
