UFC Media Conference Call Live Coverage

UFC President Dana White today announced during a media conference call that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will fight Brock Lesnar in a five-round championship bout on November 15th at UFC 91 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

- Dana White announced that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will take on Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 on November 15th in Las Vegas. Both Couture and Lesnar are on the call.
- Win or lose, Couture will remain in the UFC.
- The UFC will do “everything in their power” to get Couture vs. Emelianenko booked, but says they must work it out with Affliction.
- The fight will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, not in Portland, Oregon as expected. White says that the UFC will still be coming to Portland at some point but that the November 15th date was just rumors.
- Nogueira and Mir will still fight at UFC 92 for the interim heavyweight title then the winners of both bouts will unify the titles in early-2009.
- The UFC and Couture has settled their legal dispute as part of their agreement to have Couture return to the octagon.
- Couture says he is not yet ready for Lesnar but will analyze his opponent and train accordingly.
- Lesnar says heavyweight championship shot a “great opportunity”.
- Dana White says they are happy to resolve issues and Couture adds that both sides had to make compromises to make things work. White says all he cares about is that Couture is “back and he’s fighting”. They have cleared the air and are “trying to move forward”.
- White says Lesnar looked “damn good” in his fight against Heath Herring and that he was determined to be the top contender as fans had little interest in seeing Lesnar fight Cheick Kongo.
- Dana White says Couture-Lesnar will be “biggest fight” in UFC history
- Lesnar “honored” to get into the octagon with Randy.
- Couture says he weighs 225 pounds at present and will weigh 225 pounds for the fight. Says he can overcome the weigh difference with Lesnar.
- Couture says he’d be okay walking away now in terms of his legacy but that he’s “fighting because he loves to fight” and he wants to take top heavyweight ranking away from Emelianenko.
- White says UFC will offer Emelianenko a “fair deal”. Says contract of Emelianenko with Affliction another “obstacle” to Couture-Emelianenko happening.
- White says UFC 91 will do over a million PPV buys.
- Dana says he would be “horrified” if Affliction survives until January.
- Couture says he’d rather fight Emelianenko in November but that they’re “on the right road”.
- White calls upcoming heavyweight championship fights a “tournament”.
- White says UFC heavyweight division looking “pretty damn good” now.
- Couture says there’s no way he can overlook someone as big as Lesnar and that he will take him “very, very seriously”.
- White says Affliction is losing loads of money and that when you’re losing the kind of money Affliction’s losing you have to “sell a lot of t-shirts”.
- White says it drives him “insane” when people call Fedor the best pound-for-pound fight in the world because he hasn’t fought top competition. White says he wants to see if Emelianenko is the best and White says he has to come to the UFC to fight the best.
- Lesnar says he doesn’t “give a shit” about Fedor.
- Lesnar says it’s tough to succeed in MMA without a solid wrestling base.
- White says “UFC Countdown” for Couture-Lesnar will be a two or three part series on Spike TV.
- Couture says he believes his Nevada fighting license is still current but White says the UFC would buy him one if it wasn’t.
- White says other promotions can have any fighters he cuts.
- White says Fabricio Werdum is also in the heavyweight title mix.
- Lesnar says he cuts 15 pounds to get down to the 265 pound heavyweight limit.
- Couture will be attending UFC 88 on Saturday with White in Atlanta.
- PPV projections are 1-1.5 million buys, but White is hesitant on saying it will bear De La Hoya-Pacquiao.
- Couture says deal is a new, three-fight contract replacing the previous contract which had two bouts remaining.
- White says he would not sign Fedor to a one-fight deal and that he would have to sign a multiple-fight contract in order to fight in the UFC for the heavyweight title.
- White says no one was cheated by Couture coming back, including Frank Mir.
- Couture says he wishes things could have gone better in the last year with the UFC.
- Lesnar says he’s not frustrated about Fedor talk, but that he’s ecstatic about fight against Couture and feels like he’s wasting time because everyone’s talking about Fedor.
- White says Fedor is”completely irrelevant” and that everyone just wants to talk about fighters not in the UFC.
- White says dispute with Randy Couture is “done” but says other disputes, including one with HDNet, may continue.
- Lesnar says he’s never declined a fight and that he puts himself at risk with matchups and hopes the risk pays off with victories over good opponents.
- Couture says HDNet owner Mark Cuban not disappointed in his choice to return to the UFC but that he hopes to get more UFC access for HDNet.

@The Gunslinger – I’m hoping so as I feel Kampmann is the most legitimate contender at 185 in the UFC, even ahead of Cote. His injury knocked him back down the ladder but I think a win over Marquardt definitely makes that matchup likely, though there are a few others I could also see getting the chance to fight Silva.

@The Gunslinger – Yeah, rumors are the UFC will have a show in December at a US Military base, though I haven’t heard which one yet.

@Ryan Money – It’s pretty unexpected actually. Usually the UFC issues a “Media Advisory”, which inform members of the media of upcoming calls days before they’re scheduled, but in this case it was just sent out this morning.
Rumors from late last week indicated today could be when Couture’s return could be officially announced but the call was put together on rather short notice.
Sherdog Radio said that they was told that at 3 sharp while on the conference call… but I don’t know if that is really where they got their info
Angle in the UFC = The UFC’s own version of Ken Shamrock (Circa now)

we would all like to think it’s something to do with Randy, but lately these “big” announcements have been anything but. really, what if it’s just an announcement debunking the Randy thing, and instead they announce Brock’s other opponent (likely Cheick Kongo). hell, it might not even be an announcement about UFC 91 which would be hilarious considering there’s more information about the event schedule to FOLLOW it.

Randy is saying that per his lawyer to cut all ties with ufc and likewise UFC lawyers told them to leave Randy up there on his website per the contract which until the contract expires or he is beated will he no longer be champ.
It is a little bit of a back and forth on both side of legal purposes only. He has never lost and never had meet the guidelines per his contract.
Winner of Couture vs Lesnar will fight winner of Nog vs Mir in 2009 for the unified title.
BROCK vs Randy is not for a title, but a title shot.

Randy should have been stripped a long time agao and Brock Lesnar does NOT deserve a title shot yet.
Hell, I don’t even think Mir deserves a title shot at this point, but the damn division was so thin on fighters…
To be honest I also thought Nog vs Sylvia was a horrible interm belt fight.
I guess what I am saying is that NONE of the 4 deserve the title in my eyes! =)
It’s a rule that you need to fight within the year in order to retain your belt. That is why Serra had to rush back vs GSP because he would have lost his belt if he waited an extra month or two to heal from his back problems. Since Couture’s last fight was 08-25-07, that means he is no longer the UFC Champion. Consider yourself educated.

This is exactly the same reason why Randy left the UFC in the first place. The politics, the money, etc… Would suck for him to come back and lose this one. Though I don’t see it happening.

@Markus J – Sure, it’s crazy he’s being given a shot, but he’s got lots of fans, the the heavy weight category is very light (no pun intended). But I’m certainly interested in the fight, itself – regardless if I think he’s deserving.
Yeah Kimbo and Ken will end with Ken getting his head knocked off in 30 secs, he is such a small HW it will not be fair.
UFC despite its politics puts together the best fights and fighters around.

That’s an easy one in my books.
The title shot without Randy coming back should have been Fabricio Werdum vs Nogueira WITHOUT question. A rematch to their Pride fight. With wins over Vera (cosidered contender at the time) and Gonzaga he was much more deserving then Frank Mir was or Lesnar now is.

You are right. Again it’s all about politics and sales…. and Dana knows damn well that all the WWF fans out there, and in here apparently, want to see their boy Brock fight for the title. Werdum despite being worlds ahead of Brock in skill just wouldn’t draw the PPV buys. So like many recent fights, the best overall fighter gets stiffed for the new guy who everyone knows from a botched shooting star press at wrestlemania! =) lol.
Werdum should be fighting Nog and the winner of that fight should be fighting Randy for the title. Mir and Lesnar are not in the same league as these guys and these up coming fights will prove just that.

It truely (sadly)is all about the fans and viewers rather then who deserves the title shot. It is a business for them so they are going after the highest paying fights they can book.
And Randy is smart coming back becuase if he signs with Afflication and then go belly up like they will within the year then he will eother not get paid what is owed and have to come back to the UFC.
I bet the get the Fedor vs Randy in Feb 2009. Everyone wants it and I know it will happen, if Randy survies the beast.

Though I do hope Affliction hangs around as the competition is good for the UFC and there are so many good fighters out there who need to be show cased and there just isn’t enough room in one organization for everyone.
I agree with Dana, Fedor is not pound for pound in my book either since Pride and K1 had him fighting less then top fighters. Do not get me wrong his speed is crazy and he took down Tim in a heart beat.

I’m not saying that Werdum isn’t the most deserving, but honestly we are splitting hairs here. I would in no way cry foul over someone getting a shot over Werdum. He is coming off of a great victory over Vera (who was coming off of a loss to Sylvia), but before that looked disappointing in a victory over Gonzaga, and had no answers in his loss to Arlovski. So, while he might be the top contender, I don’t think he is THAT obvious of a choice.
This is the biggest fight, money-wise that the UFC could possibly make. Why not do it? The sad thing is, this fight will garner more PPV buys than the GSP vs Penn superfight. At the end of the day, it is a business, and this seems to be the best business decision.

Fedor is 2-0-1 against current UFC champ Nogueira. He also destroyed longtime champ Tim Sylvia at the Affliction show. White gets away with a dumbass statement like this because he knows that MMA noobs are too dumb to research it. I guess Fedor will have to beat Frank Mir to *really* prove himself to Dana…

Penn should have to defend his own belt once first (vs Kenny Florian) before coming up a weight class and getting a shot at GSP for his. Coming up he should have had to fight at least Alves first in a #1 contender fight before being granted a chance at a second title.

Hunt and Coleman are both way past their prime so those are pretty much stepping stone fighters and so is Heath. He took apart Cro Cop and Nog pretty dam well, Tim has been a stiff for 3 years. I agree with Dana on his statements, I think Anderson is pound for pound best fighter. I do think Fedor is up there in the top 5.

Great News for Fedor with multiple-fight contract
Dana the master negotiator is at it again. Let’s see–to put a Fedor/Couture fight together he’s got to make a deal with Fedor and Affliction. So what better way to create an environment conducive for productive negotiating than to insult Affliction by saying he’ll be “shocked” if they’re still in business *and* Fedor by calling him irrelevant. Too bad he didn’t call Vadim Finkelstein a “crazy Russian” again just to complete the trifecta. Maybe he’s going soft…

In a year or two, if Lesnar stays in the UFC, he will be the man to beat. Fedor is and will be more skilled, but as Lesnar learns submissions and how to defend submissions, with his strength, he will be the man that can defeat Fedor. I don’t think Fedor has ever fought anybody that has Lesnar’s wrestling abilities and strength, but that won’t matter until Lesnar learns some jits.

2 years of focused training and no injuries and you are right Brock will be a true nightmare.
He has to get some submissions and be able to defend them because Fedor knows so many and he can transision so fast. He’d have Lesnar’s arm or leg before he knew what was happening. I hope Lesnar does improve in his skills, that would be a great fight.
personally, i feel, to give lesnar a shot at couture is TOO premature!
i mean, come on! he’s only finished 2 fights of his UFC career! and it doesnt mean he already deserve a title shot!
there are those whove been on so many fights and yet never given the opportunity!

You’re right… It’s not fair… but that’s the way it is. Money talks and fair walks. I just wonder how Dana will feel if Lesnar somehow defeats Couture and Mir defeats Nog. That would set up Lesnar-Mir 2 for the championship. How many PPV buys will that fight generate? They just fought!
Lesnar makes more $ available to everybody by being there. If Zuffa doesn’t share with the fighters they lose fighters any number of ways in the long run.
