Matt Hughes Knee Injury Unlikely To Require Surgery

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes announced on Tuesday that his injured knee will likely not require surgery, effectively clearing the way for an eventual return to the octagon to take on rival Matt Serra.
“Last Wednesday, I went in for my second MRI and also a stress x-ray. It all came back very positive and looks as though I will not need surgery,” wrote Hughes on Matt-Hughes.com. “I still have to go back for my three month check-up to find out more; but as of right now I can do more and start exercising a little bit.”
Hughes and Serra are expected to fight in the first-half on 2009.

I doubt they get rid of him…he was the welterweight champ…lost to gsp(currently the best welterweight)..and then if he loses to Hughes(the most dominant welterweight of all time)…I don’t think that would be grounds for kicking him out of the ufc…Im sure he’ll fight a couple more…have poor showings and then he will retire…I really can’t wait for hughes to bash his face in and then make him tap like the lil **** he is…
Serra should drop back down to 155 after this fight. Should be a good fight. Serra subs Hughes IMO, but I guess we will have to wait and see.

I think that hughes AND serra, should BOTH retire after this fight. After watching MIDDLE WEIGHT ALVES kick his @ss, EVERYONE knows hughes is done. And serra wouldn’t be able to keep up in lw or ww. THey should both train hard for this fight and try to end their careers on a posotive note.

dannyboy, i’m with you. although i couldn’t stand serra cuz he’s suchhhhhh a typical jersy/new yorker type, he did win me over on both seasons due to the fact that he’s an all around good guy. he showed on a number of occassions that he was a good trainer by basically bein the team leader on the comeback and by having a majority of the wins against hughes. hughe’s team couldn’t stand him on the show and the fact that his guy won is more of a testament to danzig than to hughes. As far as i’ve heard, the whole deal between hughes and serra is a result of hughes bein a prick and serra callin him out on it. i don’t see this bein an easy fight for either fighter, but i do hope serra wins.

I agree with DannyBoy (I think that’s a 1st) Hughes is a complete douche bag. There are so many more fighters that hate Hughes. GSP, Thiago Alves, BJ Penn, to name a few. He’s an arrogant prick and just talks mad **** to everyone else. One of the Big reasons Serra hates Hughes so much is from season 4. He was such a dick to GSP cause they were going to going into their rematch and Hughes had tapped GSP out once before. So Hughes felt he can say whatever and rub it in his face.
Matt Serra was also the better trainer, his team loved him and he had all but 2 victories in the 1st round. Danzig was gonna win it all no matter what, he was just better and had more experience than anyone else. And if you still don’t believe he is a great coach, watch TUF season 4. They didn’t have any real coaches and its Matt that steps up, corners each guy and manages to all but sweep the other team. Shonie carter would have gotten killed by Rich clementi if it wasn’t for Matt.
I can’t emphasis how much I want Matt Serra to break Hughes arm and send him back to the farm.

i think asian star just finds it a tad bit douchey to impose your way of life on other’s because of your supposed position of power (which is how it would appear to cast members on that show, not to us). and when hughes is seemingly abusing his position in that situation, it makes him come off like a holier than thou asshole which a lot of religious folk tend to demonstrate regardless of their mma ability.

To all the Matt Hughes fans, Do I know 1st hand, no. But should I take the word of a bunch of fighers that have dealt with him? Yes. Before the Thiago Hughes fight, they showed in the the UFC countdown a story about why there was bad blood between the two. And Thiago explained when he was starting out after a loss, Hughes came up to coach at the gym where he was tarinning. And was just being a dick about Thiago getting submitted. You add that to how I’ve seen him treat and talk to the fighters on the TUF seasons. Along with his statements he put out to the media (including walking out on the GSP Fitch fight) and it paints a pretty clear picture of a man that has a huge ego and a guy that is a arrogant dick.

Alright this is my last comment on the hughes saga…. as for the fitch and gsp fight he said this “I usually don’t do this, but I’m going to break my rule this time. There’s been so much talk about my last blog entry that it’s amazing. Some of it is legitimate thinking, some of it is just from idiots. I never said the GSP fight was boring, the reason I walked out was because I wanted to beat the crowd. I didn’t think Fitch was going to get back in the match and the fight wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be. If you want, you can go look at my last blog entry and see that this is basically what I said. So people criticized me for leaving the fight early and said that was disrespectful to GSP, I disagree, I just wanted to get out of there. Some people just need to realize that this is what I do for a living. Now let’s take what you do for a living, go to a conference every month for a few years and see if you want to leave early during one of them. I even had one guy on Yahoo! Sports report that I said that I thought GSP was on steroids. If you go back to my blog and look at what I actually said, I said that I thought that he looked smaller than he has looked before. Why does Matt Serra have no right to talk about Hughes? He’s never said he was a paper champion or questioned his skills. He’s ripped hughes the entire time for being a dick. And watch season 4 of TUF and tell me if he doesn’t treat GSP like **** for the portion he comes out to train. G, I’m with you. Matt vs Matt now seems worthless. 9 months ago Serra was the champ, and Hughes was the former champ. Hughes was rude to Serra on TUF 4, back when Hughes was the champ. It would have been a great five round title fight. Now it seems like two ex-champs in a 3 round we don’t care about. It wouldn’t have mattered, because by now GSP would have won the title already.
2 Cups is right. GSP went in and underestimated Matt and got caught, Plain and simple. All the GSP fans love to make up reasons their hero lost. Plain and simple GSP got caught with a right hook that dropped him. GSP isn’t superman, he isn’t unbeatable, he under estimated a tough opponent and got caught it happened and isn’t real debatable.
I hope Serra wins and they both go away….
@windmiller – Welcome to the wonderful world of MMA fight records. Sherdog is basically the go to for us in terms of records but the UFC (I believe) gets the records from the fighters directly and they may include fights Sherdog doesn’t have as well as some amateur bouts.
In general you could check 10 different sites and find 10 different records for a given fighter. Sherdog tends to be the most accurate and is what we use but in all reality a fighters record isn’t all that accurate.

Matt Hughes has been called a d*ck for many different reasons. I thought he was an as*hole on TUF 4 when he was being a douche to GSP and then made a racial comment to Din Thomas about having big lips.
It was only after that, that we started to see Matt Serra talking **** about Hughes and rightfully so. Also, Serra’s boy Luke Cummo was on TUF 2 when Hughes was the coach and we all know how that **** went down.
Also, it’s funny that all you Hughes fans seem to have forgotten the part in Hughes book where he admits to egging on the fight between Serra and Marc Laimon. Hughes came in after beating Gracie and was more than happy to rub it in Serra’s face that he just beat a guy Serra used to train with…
Then there’s the way he acted during TUF 6 (being a b*tch about losing) and who could forget that after Hughes got his a*s beat by Alves that he turned around started talking **** about Serra again.
Matt Serra for his part has been sticking up for his buddies and working his ass off for this fight. He earned enough respect from me after seeing him become a leader to his team on TUF 4 and then being trainer and a true mentor to his guys on TUF 6.
Plus he’s funny as hell. That’s probably why I like Serra so much, he’s a fu*king riot on TV. It’ll be a tough match but I honestly think Serra has the tools to bring it all together and finish Hughes. Will he ever be a champ again? Not sure, but he can most def take out Hughes.

UFC Fan, you gotta understand that you mention all the W’s but you leave out the fact that the 1st time he fought BJ he was dominated and got submitted. GSP kicked him in the face and KO’d him the 2nd time around. BJ won the 1st 2 rounds of the 2nd fight, but broke a few ribs and tore cartillage when he was taking Matt’s back and that’s why he gassed and Hughes won. Tapped by GSP the 2nd time. You name drop Newton and Trigg, but they aren’t great fighters. And he beat a 40 something year old Royce Gracie hardly something to hang your hat on. So Hughes will be a hall of famer but I would hardly call him the most dominate champ. Chuck had a run where he beat Randy twice, Tito Twice, Bablu to name a few. Anderson still hasent lost and cleaned out the whole division. So lets not go over board with the love for Hughes.

Randy wasn’t 40 when they had their 3 matches. And lets not forget Randy went on to win the HW title and defend it against Napo. So their is a big difference in Royce and Randy.
And I love Carlos Newton, he’s an entertaining fighter and is a expert in Dragon Ball Ju Jitsu which is classic. But he hardly great. You can’t have a 13 and 13 record losing to all the upper class fighter and be called great, Hes basicly Karo or Nick. A very skilled fighter that will never be a champ.

Only Hughes refers to himself as a 9 time champ.
