Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock To Headline October 4th EliteXC on CBS
Street fighter turned mixed martial artist Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will take on UFC hall of famer Ken Shamrock in the main event of EliteXC’s October 4th event on CBS.
The matchup was confirmed this afternoon.
Slice (3-0) posted his third-straight victory on EliteXC’s CBS debut card in May with a controversial third-round TKO of James Thompson. He previously defeated Tank Abbot and Bo Cantrell via first-round stoppages.
Shamrock (26-13-2) has lost five-straight contests and has dropped eight of his last ten bouts. He has not won since mid-2004 when he defeated Kimo Leopoldo via first-round knockout at UFC 48 “Payback”. In his most-recent fight Shamrock was defeated by Robert Berry via first-round technical knockout in the main event of Cage Rage 25 in March.
EliteXC’s October 4th event takes place at the BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida will be broadcast in primetime on CBS beginning at 9pm ET and will feature Slice vs. Shamrock in the evening’s main event. Popular EliteXC female fighter Gina Carano will also return to the cage at the event, taking on Kelly Kobold-Gavin and Jake Shields will put his EliteXC welterweight title on the line against Paul Daley.

I thought this would happen, even though Shamrock lost to that nobody in Cage Rage. Not a bad fight for Kimbo; he should keep fighting names who are big but past their prime. If he beats Shamrock, Kimo would be another good opponent for him.

I don’t see anyway possible that Kimbo Slice will be Ken Shamrock. Shamrock is coming off of an embarrassing loss and Kimbo, by now, must beginning to believe the hype about himself. Kimbo has a big punch, but no discernable MMA skills. James Thompson was the perfect opponent for Slice because he has no MMA skills either. A better fight would probably be Robert Berry vs. Kimbo Slice. I wonder why they paired Slice up with the LOSER of Berry vs. Shamrock…

Kimbo Slice is a big puncher, but what else can he do? He can’t beat Ken Shamrock if he has no MMA skills. Shamrock has fought some of the very best and he’s taken big shots before, can Kimbo take the submissions that Shamrock has for him? If Shamrock really is completely washed up and he loses to a schumk like Kimbo Slice, then he should quit for good while he can still walk and talk and tie his own shoes. If Shamrock does win, though, then Slice should either learn some MMA skills or go back to street fighting.
This is a joke. Anyone who saw Shamrocks last fight and the phantom punch the KO’d him know either he is A) over the hill, so much so I could knock his old @ss out or B) he is just taking dives for the cash. For those who didn’t see it the punch caught him on the glove and he went down and out. I am sure the fix is in and you will see a 1st round KO. Just like Kimbo’s 1st fight where the guy tapped to 2 punches, you can’t tell me that didn’t look like he was payed to take a dive to help drive the myth that is Kimbo.

Ken may be past his prime, but Kimbo Slice has been, at best, unimpressive and, at worst, a down right joke. This may turn out to be a not bad fight.

I was hoping that it would be Frank Shamrock fighting Kimbo, but I knew that EliteXC wouldn’t throw Kimbo such a difficult opponent. I am tired of EliteXC protecting this guy! I mean His last fight was against a guy who should have had his ear drained but didn’t. I am not impressed with Kimbo or EliteXC in the least. I think they are a mockery of MMA and can’t wait for them to go bankrupt!!! Then the guys with legit talent will get picked up by better organizations and have an opportunity to compete in real fights and not ones that appear to be rigged.

Perhaps we are analyzing it because, with Silva suspended, Kimbo will be the heavyweight champ in EliteXC.
That, and we don’t gauge our straightness based on who we watch fight. We aren’t insecure like that.

I don’t know what to think of this fight. I mean, it is a weird match-up. A legend on the downfall who has a weak chin vs. some guy that has no MMA talent and a big punch. This is like a very bad fatal car accident, I don’t want to watch, but I probably will have to look just in case I see something that I have never seen before. For MMA’s sake, true fans better hope Shamrock gets this victory. Ken does not have any knockout power for Kimbo, so I see an ankle lock in the making maybe a triangle. This whole thing just frustrates me. So many better fighters to watch fight and we get a Shamrock/Slice fight. This fight is pretty much a joke. If Shamrock fought like he actually wanted to be there then he could win. Lets be honest though the guy has not really fought in years. He’s been going through the motions and he even quit in a PRIDE match that he was WINNING. Truth is this is just a name for Kimbo to “beat”, now I would laugh though if Ken actually comes to fight because then Kimbo would lose on the ground unless the ref turns his head again.
Also I personally think the Rogers/Kimbo thing is real it’s just that Rogers is way above Kimbo in total MMA skills and EliteXC wants to protect him before giving him a “real” test. Lets be honest though if that fight doesn’t happen soon it may never happen because unless Elite has big ratings and sales from the next events they are going under quick.

Here’s how I see Kimbo’s next year. Beats Shamrock, get’s tossed another easy/medium fighter, intern HW championship bout against Rogers, and if he beats Rogers, fights Silva after suspension for HW title.

i hear what you are saying but Thompson was strong on the ground and kimbo was able to hold him off. granted it sure wasnt pretty and it should have been stopped but shamrock is no where near as strong as Thompson is so i dont see Kimbo having any problems if this does go to the ground. besides that Im sure Kimbo has been working on his ground game as much if not more than his standup lately. his last fight should have told him he has plenty to work on.
Regardless, it is an intriguing matchup. To everyone that says they won’t watch this fight, they are liars. Who cares if Ken is washed up. It is still interesting, just like when Gracie fought Hughes a few years back. I mean this isn’t a UFC championship bout, and I don’t think anyone is trying to hype it up like one. I think Ken will beat Kimbo pretty easily. One thing is Ken will not be intimidated and run and hide. He’ll take him down, and last match gave me no confidence in Kimbo’s ground game. I think this fight makes sense for both fighters. Ken gets a big payday, and it is the perfect match since he has a chance to possibly exploit Kimbo’s lack of ground game. And Kimbo gets another payday, against a recognizable name, and a chance to prove that he has improved as an all-around MMA fighter. The fight makes sense and is probably the best matchup they could find for Kimbo honestly. Who else are they going to put him with? Who else would make an entertaining fight and bring mainstream starpower to the bout?
The proof that this is a good matchup is right here in these comments. Half of the people think Ken is crazy and will get killed, and the other half think he’ll exploit Kimbo’s ground game.

Who said if the UFC bought Elite XC they could put together super fights? You actually have to have good fighters to do that. Elite has 3 good fighters, Shields, Lawler, and Diaz. Thats it!

Why does everyone hate on Kimbo? He’s the Elite XC’s version of Brock Lesnar.
Brock was suppose to fight Mark Coleman at UFC 87.. Mark is old and washed up to. He lost 4 of last 7 bouts, and is 44 years old. Dana put Brock in a co-Main Event in UFC 81.
Kimbo and Brock are tough one demensional fighters, that will improve.
Most importantly, they are both entertaining.

kev you want to know why a lot of true MMA practitioners/fans don’t like Kimbo? It’s because he’s everything our sport was trying not to be anymore(in the US) and yet he gets hyped and paid more than the guys who have paid their dues. I respect the fact that he has decided to train seriously and I don’t hate him personally I just don’t like the fact he makes more than guys like Diaz, Lawler, and countless other fighters who have busted their tails in the smaller organizations(making hardly anything, believe me I know) just to get a shot at a real show only to be put on an under card to a guy who beat people up on youtube. However, that if it’s what sells and gets views then so be it. It just bothers me.
The Brock Lesnar comparison is way off by the way, Lesnar just beat a quality guy in Herring and was beating ex-ufc champ Mir before inexperience caught up to him. Until Kimbo beats a quality opponent there will always be doubters so the rush is going to be there to make him beat a quality guy.

Kimbo needs to start taking his career a little more serious if he ever wants proper respect from the MMA fan base. I’m glad Kmbo is fighting Shamrock because I really believe Kimbo will lose this fight. As long as Shamrock doesn’t try to show off and sticks to a game plan of bringing Kimbo to the ground, there is no reason Ken should lose. Actually, there is no reason or way Kimbo should win. Kimbo is a one trick punching pony. Ken is a well rounded fighter with a ****load of exprience. This is NOT like the Brock/Herring fight where a true athlete and veteran fighter tested each other in the cage. This is a UFC Hall of Famer who has fought the best, been a champion and there is no reason he should lose with his experience. Kimbo is just a street fighter with heavy hands trying to prove himself in MMA by fighting low quality opponents in a second rate promotion.(or so it seems)Ken is not a top notch opponent but just through his experience he should dominate. Any other outcome than a Kimbo loss is going to piss me off bad!

i like people saying kimbo needs to take his career seriously. Hes making more money in his current contract than some of the people posting here will make in their lifetime, and he’s not even having to face top-rated competition! How is that bad for his career?
Plus, Kimbo and Gina are all that EliteXC has to draw in the big numbers. You think they would let Shamrock win? It seems to me that if Kimbo loses one fight, people will abandon that promotion all together. No way they give Kimbo a real fight until Elite gets bigger stars, or crumbles financially.

KEN: Kimbo used to smoke. A lot. For a lot of years. He has done CONSIDERABLE, PERMANENT damage to his lungs. That is a fact. Take him down and he WILL GAS. It is not a negotiable thing. His lungs are black and his capacity to hold wind is much less than any athlete. Watch the Thompson fight and see how, after two rounds, Kumbo was barely standing. Get him down, my friend.

I think if Kimbo’s ground game was suspect before THEN there is a possability for Ken to take advantage in that department and win via submission. We haven’t seen Ken be even a contender on the ground to anybody in years so he will probably try to go out there and bang and get KO’d however with how easily Kimbo was controlled on the ground against Thompson (who isn’t known for his amazing ground skills) we MAY get a glimps at how bad Kimbo’s take down defence really is.
My bet tho is Ken gets KTFO in round 1.

Fight 4 the pinata. With a straight up match and no reprecussions Thompson hurts Kimbo 9/10. It was a work… Chances are 10/4 will be as well.
why does everyone think ken even has a chance in this fight. no kimbo isnt a bjj black belt. or even a white belt. but regardless of that ken isnt strong enough to get kimbo down. even it does go to the ground ken still isnt going to be able to control kimbo. bas rutten trains kimbo do you think they havent worked he ground game since his last fight? you should know they have. the only time this fight goes to the ground is when ken goes falling with his legs stiff, toes curled up and eyes glassed over. he better hope his heart is still beating after he hits the floor though.

The problem I have with Ken is that in his last several fights (both Tito, Franklin, Kimo and others) he now wants to stand and trade with guys. That is NOT the way to beat Kimbo for Ken. I do think there are several HW’s that can stand and trade with Kimbo but not Ken…
One thing Ken does have going for him is he does not need to worry about making the 205lb weight so he should be more energetic, assuming he leaves the first round, that will be a big problem for Kimbo if it goes to later rounds (assuming the Ref doesn’t stop it for no apparent reason and declare Kimbo the winner)
I see Ken doing fine with the strength of Kimbo but Ken’s chin is in serious question, if Ken stands with Kimbo he loses. If ken takes Kimbo down he still has to put him in an extremely dangerous position or submission because the ref will not let kimbo lose to a GnP – Thompson had him for nearly 2 minutes laying there in a fetal position and the ref did nothing.
When I said Thompson’s ground game was in question I didn’t mean he had NO ground game, what I meant was Thompson is NOT a submission or GnP known fighter. He’s a strong striker that is an MMA fighter so he is well rounded. Ken SHOULD have better takedowns than Thompson has, He should also have a better submission game. But all of this is assuming Ken is even going to last past the first minute.

I don’t see anyway possible that Kimbo Slice will be Ken Shamrock. Shamrock is coming off of an embarrassing loss and Kimbo, by now, must beginning to believe the hype about himself. Kimbo has a big punch, but no discernable MMA skills. James Thompson was the perfect opponent for Slice because he has no MMA skills either. A better fight would probably be Robert Berry vs. Kimbo Slice. I wonder why they paired Slice up with the LOSER of Berry vs. Shamrock…
