Henderson vs. Jackson in October, Only Light Heavyweight Title on the Line
In a post-UFC 71 interview Pride welterweight and middleweight champion Dan Henderson stated that his fight with newly crowned UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson will take place sometime in October. Henderson continued to say that he is friends with both Chuck Liddell and Quinton Jackson although he is closer with the latter making their upcoming fight even more intriguing.
The fight will be held under UFC rules and will be held in the octagon. Because of this, Henderson stated that only Jackson’s title will be on the line. Prior this UFC 71 Henderson signed a contract with the UFC for the fight. The deal guarantees one fight in the UFC, although if Henderson wins the light heavyweight title (and becomes the simultaneous holder of 3 MMA titles) he would be offered further fights under the UFC banner.
With a win Henderson’s first light heavyweight title defense would likely be against Chuck Liddell.
The only current rumored UFC event for October is rumored to be held in Cincinnati, although at this point the rumored location is highly speculative. As soon as I find out more about the event I will pass it along and add it to the UFC rumors section.Sherdog interview

Why even keep the pride titles? do they mean anything? is the pride league going to keep going over in japan??
What about V. Silva? how does he play into this jackson/henderson/liddle fold???
Did you mean Wanderlei Silva? Right now he is rumored to be fighting Liddell this fall while Henderson faces Jackson. It is believed Henderson will face Liddell next as long as he wins. Otherwise I think we will see the winners of these 2 fights meet for the title.
As far as the Pride titles the simple answer is yes, they will be keeping pride going in Japan. Right now they need to get a TV deal and another show. The bad news is they cancelled their lightweight GP probably due to planning issues but if you keep an eye on this site I usually pass along major MMA news no matter the organization.
a bill in illinios just passed in springfield (the house? the senate? i don’t know who the retreads are or what they do) to make the ufc under the athletic commissions regulation. as i understood things, because it was not expressly under the regulation of the athletic commission they didn’t want to come here but with this bill hughes said they would be in chicago as sson as everything was complete – could be december.
well as good as Hendo is and as huge as rampage is i dont think they should fight for eachothers titles right yet until they do the ufc vs pride superbowl mma show so they can pit title against title cuz its not fair for jackson cuz if he loses then he lost his belt if Hendo loses he still gets to retain his title(s) but i guess its gonna be a huge money maker of a show lol….hey kris i’ve never said this b4 but u run one helluva wicked site here…i always come here for my news, props bro someones got to give credit where credit is due and u do a wicked job…keep it up man
First and foremost, thanks for the compliments.
As far as what you said, I was originally under the impression that this was going to be a pride vs. UFC super bowl event likely with Chuck vs. Silva on it as well. With what Hendo said though it is hard to tell what they are planning on doing now. The problem with title v. title matches is what weight class do you use? What rules do you use? And what ring ring do you use. I think eventually they will happen but right now the UFC is looking to just hype a huge event, even if it means there is only one title on the line.
Henderson wasn’t totally clear in the interview on his exact contract format so there is probably more to this story than we really know.
Dana stated both belts would be on the line.
@ Mattias – That was the impression I had initially as well but he made it quite clear in the interview he didn’t think his would be. Maybe it was just lack of communication between him and the UFC or it will only be the light heavyweight title. I’ll post an update once we learn more but right now this is the most solid news to go on.
@ pk – Thanks for the update on the situation. I covered this not to long ago when we learned the UFC would be coming to Chicago. With most major events for 2007 already having locations a Chicago event this year would probably mean a Fight Night event, not a PPV. If it holds of until the first several months of ‘08 then a Chicago PPV UFC card is definitely possible.
i “think” the match between hendo and rampage shouldn’t be until hendo fights chuck. that way hendo gets some face time and chuck gets to earn a shot for the title. what happened with “shogun” rua?
I think how you laid it out would work well but the UFC doesn’t want chuck to face Jackson so quick considering how the first 2 fights went.
Rua has officially been signed and was potentially rumored for UFC 72 but that is looking more and more unlikely so his debut will not likely be until later this summer, my guess is UFC 74.
