Update: Ruediger Denied Fight Due to Suspension

Posted by Kris Karkoski on May 22, 2007 at 5:06 pm ET4 Comments

K-1, a mixed martial arts promotion that many casual fans may not be familiar with is planning on hosting a show at the 90,000 seat LA Coliseum in conjunction with Pro Elite’s Elite XC promotion. The problem is that the promotion hasn’t been granted a license to hold the event and only 1 fighter, former pro wrestler Brock Lesner, is cleared for the K-1 portion of the event entitled “Dynamite USA” according to the Fight Network.  Then the plot of the event thickens…

In a recent interview with our site former TUF 5 competitor Gabe Ruediger stated that he would be fighting soon with a large organization. This may have been the fight he was referring to although it is likely that he is still under contract with the UFC and may be competiting on The Ultimate Fighter 5 live finale in late June. The NSAC still lists Ruediger as under suspension and he is therefore unable to compete at the K-1 show.

Pro Elite currently has a promoters license for the event and its portion of the event way continue to be broadcast on Showtime but the event is just over a week away and the K-1 portion of the event is in serious jeopardy.

I have two things to comment on!!!! First of all, this sport does not need anyone like Gabe Ruediger. It was pathetic to watch that episode where he cries and crapped all over his shot at the UFC. I hope I never see him fight for the UFC or anyother MMA events. That leads me to my second comment. I hope that some of these johhny come lately MMA leagues don’t hurt the legitimicy of MMA. UFC has worked to hard to bring this sport to main stream, it would suck for some crappy league to ruin things….(example: death, cheating or what ever)…..I also think there needs to be very very strick punishment for illegal drug violations ,,,,,,,,

there might be someone out there that is jsut looking for the change to set MMA back 10 years,,,,you know what I mean

Jeff, you’re joking, right? K-1 has been around since 1993, and is not in the slightest a ‘johnny come lately’ organization.

  • Kris says:

I don’t think he is probably meaning it is new in general but it is new in the sense of coming to the US to do a show. They never tried to come until MMA was exploding led by the UFC and I simply don’t see them coming back anytime soon.

While I liked the action of parts of the show its overall feel, poor choice of venue, poor management, and that darn DJ probably turned off the few people who bought it.
