Reljic-Leites, Almeida-Horwich Added To UFC 90
On Tuesday the UFC announced that two additional middleweight matchups have been added to the official card for UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote” as Goran Reljic will drop from light heavyweight to 185-pounds to take on up-and-comer Thales Leites and Ricardo Almeida will look to bounce back from his first loss in eight bouts against former IFL middleweight champ Matt Horwich:
“Known primarily for his ground game thanks to an unbeaten record that saw him five of his first seven bouts by submission, Zagreb, Croatia’s Reljic (8-0) instead showed a vicious standup attack in his UFC debut at UFC 84 in May as he stopped light heavyweight contender Wilson Gouveia in the second round. On October 25th, Reljic will drop down to middleweight to take on Rio De Janeiro, Brazil’s Thales Leites (13-1), who is on a four fight winning streak, with UFC victories over Pete Sell, Floyd Sword, Ryan Jensen, and most recently, Nate Marquardt.
A five year veteran with a pro MMA record of 23-10-1, Gresham, Oregon’s Horwich will
finally make his long-awaited UFC debut this October, and with wins over Octagon vets Josh Burkman, Jason MacDonald, Vernon White, and Benji Radach already under his belt, this 29-year old battler should fit right in. Standing across from him on fight night though will be a formidable foe in Almeida (9-3), one of the sport’s best ground fighters and winner of seven of his last eight bouts, with victories coming over the likes of Nate Marquardt, Ryo Chonan, and Kazuo Misaki.”

2 solid fights. horwich was a character in the IFL.
i dont see how any1 could skip a card i would watch any ufc card and i do mean any, it must cost u guys alot to order it if people would rather not watch it.
This sounds like a weak card so far. How ’bout you “Spike” this one?
I love watching Silva maybe more than any other fighter, but Cote is going to get demolished in this one. KO round 1 without a doubt.
HOPEFULLY ALMEIDA HAS WORKED ON HIS CARDIO.
LEITES GETS HIS A$$ KICKED HERE.
How could you guys seriously sit here and say this is a weak card!
Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote
UFC Middleweight Championship
Diego Sanchez vs. Thiago Alves
possible fight for next shot at GSP!
Thales Leites vs. Goran Reljic
Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Horwich
Melvin Guillard vs. Spencer Fisher
Spencer always puts on a great fight!
And I’m sure Dana and Joe are not done yet. Some of these fights won’t even get televised!
They should add a Frankie Edgar vs Nate Diaz fight to this card. I would love to see those 2 fight!
I think Dana should add a “real main event” but since the posters have already been made I doubt that will happen.
haha buddy! I’m guessing that’s a shot at Cote. I agree. I don’t think he earned the shot either. He should have fought someone else first. I think he should have fought Nate Quarry.
I like a strong headliner; I want to see a competetive headliner. Cote’s gonna get smoked. I’m also not going to be paying for UFC 88 for the same reason. I think the matchups are mediocre at best.
Lord Mark, Cote vs Quarry would be cool, but how about Marquardt vs Cote? That would be a cool pairing.
My only problem with this card is the fact that there is no light-heavyweight bout schedule. The division is so deep there should always be a light-heavy fight on all cards.
I hope spencer beats the **** out of guillard.
Marquardt vs Cote would have been cool to but the fact that he lost his last fight puts a little damper on that in my opinion. Marquardt is gonna have to win a few before he can be considered again. He is a bad a$$ though.
jwilly84us,
you are def right about that. Like I said though, They are still creating this card and I can’t see Joe and Dana putting this together without the deepest division in the UFC having at least 1 fight.
This card isn’t that bad, although i think cote is gonna get wrecked.I personally think leban and bisbing is a joke. For a main event they should have machida/thiago.both 13-0 bisbing leban should be ufn.
RJA,
Didn’t they say that the bisping/leben card was going to be on spike here in the states? I have no problem with that.
Yes Leben/Bisping is “Spiked.”
Lord Mark, I didn’t see the last Marquardt fight, but from what I understand/remember he had a 1 or 2 point deduction and lost a split. I heard he dominated most of the fight.
Last i checked on the UFC web sight it is a ppv event
the fights i want to see is sanchez beeating alves i dont care for cote vs silva we all know that cote we get killed.
Well if thats the case i have no problem with it.I just didn’t think it worth paying for.
and i for got iw ould like to see fisher fight hes alwaya awesome and he beat alves!!!!! hahahah! HA!
Yeah. I like Marquardt to. A shame he lost that way. I hope they let him fight that bumb Bisping next if Bisping can beat Leben. That would speak volumes for Bisping if he could beat Marquardt and then people like myself could finally respect the man that so many unjustly glorify.
once the KENFLO vs penn fight happens they should have tyson vs edgar for title shot.
tyson all the way but still like KENFLO better!
Alves is a good wrestler and is going to be too strong for Fisher (see Fisher vs Edgar).
I kind of feel like Ken Flo is a WEC fighter that just doesn’t know it yet. I would like to see him with Faberinstead of worrying about Penn.
correct me if im wrong but edgar just got beat by maynard ant he? so no way he gets a shot until another 3/4 good wins
They don’t show bisbing/leben on spikes schedule,at the UFC web sight. And that would make back to back free fight’s anyway so are you sure?
I don’t know for sure. Just heard/read rumors about it being on spike. I think they actually had an article on here about it. Could be wrong though.
Yeah, Maynard did beat Edgar. I son’t think Edgar should get a title shot either. I just don’t think Ken-flo should get one yet. He needs to be at least on or 2 more top ten guys in order to get that in my opinion. The best scenario would be that he fights the winner of Griffen/Sherk for the next shot but I really think that Sherk is gonna win and I don’t think we want to see Penn defend his belt back to back times against the same guy.
I THINK TYSON HAS A BETTER SHOUT AT BEATING BJ THEN KEN DOES..
Tyson has all the tools and the move to Vegas just made his game better. I think BJ would win. Tyson needs to whip Faber for money…If he can do it twice…
the 155 divison annoys me theres so many great fighters but BJ would take every single one of them, ide put joe daddy vs kenny winner of that gets winner of sherk tyson winner of that BJ, and while that is going on penn moves up an beats GSP
Johnboy that’s exactaly why penn shouldn’t go anywere. He hasn’t defended his title once and he wants to move up.Great for the sport bad for the knowledgable fans.I would much rather see him take care of buisness in his own division first.
Tyson has to beat Sherk before he can fight anyone else for #1 contender. Personally I feel, with GSP facing Penn at Dec 27th, Kenflo would be waiting till at least march for a fight against Penn. I don’t see kenny taking 7 months off. I could see kenflo fighting the winner of Sherk/Griffin (which i believe Tyson will win) for #1 contender in late January/early February. I know Florian has already pretty much been given #1 contender status, but 7 months is a long time…
RJA,
He’s (Penn)taking care of the profitable business only..
i agree with u ROB and i think edgar last match was with fraca or somthing like that and he won.
and bj definelty gonna lose to GSP so he should give hes shot to KENFLO first. KENFLO has earnes it. and even though he beat roger roger probaly will end up champ hes only like 25.
Yeah, Ken-flo vs Griffen would be cool but I just don’t see it happening that way. Sherk is probably goin to win and I’m not ready to see Penn/Sherk 2 yet. Eventually but not yet.
apparently,he’s in the most stacked division in the world and he wants to move up seems a little selfish. He should atleast whip a couple of more guys which like everybody else i think he would but thats not the point.
i think KENFLO can take sherk now thats y i want to see their rematch. or maybe sherk vs stevenson. al sounds exciting i hope these matches happen.
So if he moves up and looses to GSP that makes gsp LWC?Then what gsp goes down to defend it? I’m guesing thats not how it work.
No, def not how it works. GSP would have to fight Penn at 155 for that to happen.
Sherk vs Joe Daddy would be great. 2 powerhouses going at it. The only problem is that both of these guys already lost to penn so that really doesn’t do much accept establish who should be the #1 gate keeper. Although I do think that if Sherk would have try to take BJ to the ground he would have had a slightly better chance.
So then no belts on the line if they fight?
THEY should have corey hill fight gamburyan just to see what it would look like ,not to get off subject or anything.
HEY GUYS I WON’T BE COMMENTING FOR A WHIL IM LEAVING TO DENVER TILL SUNDAY.. AND NO ACCESS TO THE NET… LATER GUYS
PEACE
i want stevenson to fight sherk not for contender or anything i just think they both lo9st to bj and they were hes last to matches so i think it would be an entereting fight!
and when bj fights GSP itll be for WW title only!!
cant wait to see horwich vs almeida horwich is a good addition to ufc
Ooooooooooh! Sherk vs Stevenson? I’m down with that. Great call.
i agree despite what some people think….horwich will definitly not “stink” up the division…he could be a contender even
Thales Leites vs. Goran Reljic
Pretty good fight with futur belts contender.
horwich is the hippy Leben…
^true^
I think you are all in for a surprise. Cote has a legit chance at a knock out. On paper yeah it goes to Silva and I have to agree with most people here that Silva will win, there’s always the chance though that Cote has the right game plan and that right hand of his is loaded. Cote has shown he’s not easily beaten and he can take a shot as well as deliver one. Silva wants to stand and so does Cote so anything can happen. Me being Canadian I have to hold on to the hope that Cote will win but he’s fighting one of the most dynamic, aggressive, knowledgable fighters in the game right now so it’s gonna be a struggle any way you put it. One thing I will say though is that it won’t be a rout, Cote will make it a fight, No one can argue that.
Sean Sherk does deserve another title shot. If he can beat the top contender than he should fight Penn again. look at how many times Hughes got to have a shot at the WW belt each time he lost. Same as anyone, the ex champ should get a rematch with the cat what beat him, it’s only fair. I think Guida is going to shock the entire lw division, he keeps getting better every time he fights and hopefully he’s learning as he goes. I think he will have a real chance at the belt soon. Tyson Griffen deserves a shot at Penn right now and I think that will be a fight of the year contender. Kenflo, Sherk, Stevenson, Griffen, Guida, Davis, Edgar, Franca,Lauzon, Fisher, Tibau, Maynard, Huerta,Diaz and Clementi are all capable and great fighters in their own right and anyone of them can have a good night where their particular skill set can bring them a win against Penn. Unless of course Penn is also on his game and has trained right and has no cardio issues, then there’s gonna be trouble for anyone.
Again, it’s just my opinion
larry,
actually we can argue that cote will not make it a fight cote will come and silva will drop him and then finish him off…i see this fight ending like the fight with marquardt…
I’ll argue that Larry! I really don’t think that Cote deserved a title shot yet. He hasn’t beaten anyone that I consider a top 5 or even a top ten oponent in the division. I do believe this is going to be a one sided a$$ kicking. But with that being said, I would still love to see a lucky Matt Serra style punch for an upset.
I’m not saying never give Sherk a title shot. I just think he should have to win 2 fights in a row before he gets it again. Same thing with Rampage. I’m actually a Sherk fan. I just think it’s only fair to have to win your way back to the title shot other wise we might possible just keep seeing the same 2 guys exchanging the belt all the time.
I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see what happens. I think you are all in for a surprise. Granted Cote hasn’t defeated anyone in the top 5 of the division but he has shown some great improvment and a willingness to let it all hang out and go for broke, it’s that kind of commitment that the UFC is looking for. There really isn’t anyone else that can step up at the moment to challenge and Silva stated he wants to fight at least 4 times a year so they have to set him up with someone. Silva has to agree with the fight and he must see something in Cote as a challenge because he doesn’t want to have boring fights either so I think there will be a pleasant surprise in Oct and if Cote doesn’t win it will be a great fight anyway.
ya i bet silva will kill in the first couple of rounds but even if he may be the best p4p fighter in the world which i think hes not i would llike someone to beat silva i hope cote wins and i still think cung le could beat him and i know he would beat him if he was 5 years younger
(remember thats just my opinion)
