Affliction “Day of Reckoning”: Lindland-Belfort, Nelson-Buentello Announced; Horodecki Signed

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Aug 7, 2008 at 12:00 pm ET47 Comments

Affliction Day of Reckoning PosterMiddleweights Vitor Belfort and Matt Lindland will square off on the main card of Affliction “Day of Reckoning”, which takes place on October 11th in Las Vegas and airs on pay-per-view.

Belfort (17-8) defeated Terry Martin at Affliction’s first-ever event in July, but is currently serving a 180-day medical suspension and will need to be cleared early to take on Lindland (21-5), who topped Fabio Negao via unanimous decision at the July event.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Vladimir Matyushenko was also officially added to the main card.

On the three-bout preliminary card, which will be broadcast on HDNet, IFL heavyweight champion Roy Nelson will meet Paul Buentello and Mike Pyle will take on Jason High.

The promotion also announced on Wednesday the signing of IFL lightweight standout Chris Horodecki. Horodecki will make his Affliction debut at “Day of Reckoning”, but his opponent has not yet been determined. IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron is also expected to be in action at the October event.

Noticeably absent from the press conference was former UFC light hevayweight champion Tito Ortiz. Ortiz, who had reportedly signed a deal with the promotion on Tuesday that was to be announced at the Wednesday press conference, remains a free agent according to reports but is still expected to sign with Affliction in the coming days. He is expected to face UFC veteran Renato “Babalu” Sobral on the Affliction “Day of Reckoning” main card.

Rumored Affliction “Day of Reckoning” participants Aleksander Emelianenko, Tim Sylvia, and Ben Rothwell were not added to the fight card on Wednesday and are unlikely to fight at Affliction’s second-ever event.

Tickets for the event go on sale on Saturday, August 9th, at UNLVTickets.com and range in price from $75 to $500.

Let’s see, Tito, Belfort, Arlovski, Barnett, Roy “big country” Nelson, Little Nog and Babalu?

No way I’m not buying this. Keep ‘em coming Affliction!

Gotta lose money to make money in the MMA business. With a nice fat $40 million budget you should be fine for a few years and by then Dana’s bald head will have turned grey, fighters will be paid more and have medical care, WAMMA will have gained signifigance and there will be a ton of MMA for everyone to enjoy thanks to good ole’ fashioned COMPETITION.

Long live Affliction, EliteXC and WAMMA! Oh and I guess UFC too. :)

    Sincerely,

    Your resident liberal, hippie terrorist.

  • KOuch says:

This is going to be the second biggest card in history!!! Nelson/Buentello??? I’ve had dreams of that match up!

  • mburtoni says:

Affliction is great! Barnett vs AA, Belfort vs Lindland, and Lil’ nog vs Matyushenko all on one card, with more great fights to come. This is at least as good as many recent UFC cards. I’m buying.

  • Dannyboy says:

KOuch not sure if you’ve ever watched Nelson fight… but I’m betting Buentello gets his a$$ handed to him. GREAT fight for Nelson’s debut.

  • Planck16 says:

It sounds like you guys are working for Affliction? Some great cards, but pumping up a Buentello fight, come on! Somebody needs to slap you back to reality and let you know the best card of the year is happening this Saturday.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

DAMN RIGHT PLANCK16… I CAN CARE LESS ABOUT AFFLICTION… YOU GUYS WILL GET TIRED OF SEEING EVERYONE FIGHT EVERY CARD

  • Dannyboy says:

Uh…screw buentello… it’s quite obvious I was pumping up a NELSON fight. Buentello is just in his way. Will enjoy seeing him KTFO after his last crappy fight.

  • KOuch says:

I have…..I was poking fun at the Head Hunter who bores the f-ing life out of me. I hope Nelson accidently delivers a swift kick to Buentello’s testes followed by three illegal elbows/punches to the back of his head. The Affliction machine is really trying hard isn’t it?

  • Dannyboy says:

I do find it odd that after all the UFC nuthugging here and the many claims that all of you work for Dana that you would then try and turn it around and act like someone who likes other organizations is working for them.

Such a double standard here… I look forward to the next “I told you so” moment. It won’t be long.

  • KOuch says:

    Planck,

You should know better than to accuse me of supporting/working for Affliction. I am a full blooded UFC nazi. Born and raised.

UFC NAZI FOR LIFE! Party at Dannyboys timeshare…..wooooo

  • Planck16 says:

    KOouch,

I am glad to hear that. I am all about competition bringing the best out in the industry, but time tells all. So, what time does the NAZI Party start at the timeshare……I will be there!

  • KOuch says:

    Planck,

I’m still trying to tap phone lines to figure that out. Danny has a restraining order on me because I love and support the UFC so much. I tried explaining that Affliction is just silly but he got mad, called the cops and made up lies about me. Something about promoting illegal midget MMA in a wherehouse or somethin…..damn hippy!

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

only interestin and dissapointin thing i got from this was the horodecki signin too bad

  • Planck16 says:

Anybody watch the Couture Biography last night? My man is 4x All-American in college, 2x UFC champ, and 3x divorced. Craziness!

  • Dannyboy says:

KOuch…as I’m sure you’ve already noticed… Sarcasm doesn’t go over very well here.

Party at my timeshare will be split equally amongst UFC & Affliction/EliteXC/All other MMA supporters (My wife is a UFC nazi). The room will be free to everyone provided we are going to an Affliction/EliteXC show that you must purchase the tickets for.

I will likely have the place for an entire week and can fit 12 people including my wife and I. Nobody under 25 and you must drink & gamble to participate.

Oh, and since I have a baby on the way it will likely be at least a year before this happens. But it WILL happen to those interested.

    Likely UFC Nuthugger Candidates:

KOuch (I need someone to pick on)
Dietrich (I need someone to pick on me)
YZFOX (if he promises to stop typing all caps for the week he’s in Vegas)
Slickkid (provided he wears an outfit with the american flag on it every day)
Planck16 (as long as he looks up sarcasm and begins using it in a sentence)

  • jiujitsuMAN says:

wow they signed horodecki, i wonder for how long… i see him using AFF(im tired of typing affliction) as a stepping stone to the UFC…

i dont like horodecki or his fighting style, but the kid is good… and i think hes the 2nd best fighter they have signed..

  • YZFOXRACING says:

HA HA HA HA YOU MAKE ME LAUGH… IM CHILLIN AT WORK LAUGHING AT THESE COMMENTS

  • Planck16 says:

    DannyBoy,

Congrats on the Baby, mine is due next week, so I feel your pain. Now for the sarcasm pieces, it is pretty hard to pick up in writing from people you don’t know that well, so I will work on it, but here is your sentence with sarcasm in it:

Being a UFC Nuthugger, I was invited to the timeshare where I took all of DannyBoy’s money gambling. During his moment of denial, I started laying the SARCASM on him about how well he played and how there is no way that the kid is his. He did not take the SARCASM to well and started to cry. I handed him an Affliction shirt to dry his eyes, we are friends again.

  • Lord Mark says:

JuijitsuMAN, How don’t you like horodecki’s style?! That kid is action packed and very explosive.

  • JOHNBOY says:

i wonder if they will let us watch this in the uk after last time when the said it was on bravo then took it off???

    UFC RULES

  • Dietrich says:

    Dannyboy and Planck16,
Congrats to both of you on the family additions! Dannyboy I hearby release my position of picking on you so that your child will be fully vested day one:)
Any trip to Vegas has to include a Bobby from Capriottis, a shrimp cocktail from Fremont street, and a $.75 hotdog from the Southpoint casino in the same 6 hr period.(If one of us dies we all do). :)

  • Dietrich says:

Nice how this takes place 1 year after Randy resigns…Hordecki signing hurt the WEC a little. He would have been a good challenge for Faber…

  • Marko says:

I think Affliction is r=great but they should sign a bunch of well known former ufc fighters to make their cards familiar to people. Din Thomas, Joe Riggs, Gerald Harris, David Loiseau, Travis Wiuff, Ricco Rodriguez, Mark Hunt, Caol Uno (if dream allows it), Elvis Sinosic, Dennis Hallman, Kevin Randleman, Hayato Sakurai, are some fighters who may or may not be past their primes but are well known in the MMA community and could be draws for PPV.

  • Tspence says:

YES!! horodecki got signed, im very happy for him right on man, hope to train with you one day in london or toronto!!!

  • Dannyboy says:

Well Marko I would agree with you except all those fighters would be listed on this site as ‘washed up’ and ‘has beens’ and give the UFC fanboys too much arguing room. Remember they want all brand new names with people they’ve never heard of starting from scratch with 0-0 records or bust.

  • Goat in the boat says:

    Thank god for WEC !
This Affliction card so far sounds 3rd rate

  • Goat in the boat says:

Even the press release post looks 3rd rate !
    And as for Horodocki signing……
That sucks i was hoping he ended up at WEC or UFC.

  • indianaboy says:

are you guys kidding, how are they going to keep going with the same fighters fighting every time. they will be bankrupt very soon. Most of these guys are washed up UFC fighters on there last few fights. Dana is a buisness man love or hate him hes the smartest man in the mma buisness.

  • indianaboy says:

Its like watching an old timers game in baseball, yeah they can still hit, run and field, just alot slower…………

  • Planck16 says:

I heard they were going to rename Affliciton to: “UFC the Golden Years,” also this just in, the ABA is making a comeback and has recruited Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, and Bill Bradley all to come play. All were great players……………a long long time ago young Skywalker!

  • Dannyboy says:

Hmm… have you guys even seen the actual ages of the people that fought? Do some research then try playing the age card.

Pedro Rizzo was about the only one there that only has a couple fights left in him.

  • Tspence says:

    barnett-30
    arlovski-29
    rizzo-34
    rothwell-26
    belfort-31
    sylvia-32
    fedor-31
    lindland-38
    terry martin-27
    hominick-26
    babalu-32
    whitehead-27

yep you guys who think they’re all old and over the hill are right.. they’re obviously seniors, too old to fight!!…pfff

  • Tspence says:

oh yeah and the recently signed 20 year old, hes a ufc washup like the rest?

  • jiujitsuMAN says:

IMO, age does make a HUGE difference, while experience does also make a difference, the muscle strength of a 20-25yr old is much much more resilient than a 27-38yr old…

and with the drive that younger guys have to become great, it usually makes the older guys look like they are trying to hold onto there former glory…

im sorry AFF is gonna be like a retirement home for the first lil while, and it will be used by the younger guys, like horodecki, as a stepping stone into the UFC…

so AFF will be alot like florida… home of the newly wed, and nearly dead…. lol

  • Planck16 says:

It is not an age thing with Affliction, it is that most of the Affliction fighters have already peaked and are getting stomped in their fights! They are damaged goods, most have had run ins with steroids, got off the juice and have been pounded since. They are not like BJ Penn who went through some down times, but has evolved into one of the best. These guys are not getting better. Look at Matt Hughes, he knows where he stands, plans on one more fight, and he is done. Affliction is filled with guys who don’t have that self and social awareness.

  • kev says:

they should have put nog vs tito

  • Rock Solid says:

    Planck16,

Good point. I agree it is not there age that makes these guys “washed up.” It is there lack of skills and/or will to fight, which has left most of these guys long ago. No one here can honestly tell me they believe Tim deserved the shot against Fedor, cause if he is the best Afflicition could find to fight then they are in some serious trouble. Most of the Afflicition fighters are skill less. Sure some looked good against other skill less fighters. We seen these guys fight skilled fighters and get their a$$ handed to them. I can see the same fights at a local show or a Tuffman competition. Tito could not even beat Rashad Evans, now that is just a shame. Tito sucks (so does Jenna by the way, alot too). The UFC has a hard time finding quality talent and some of their fights suck (vera vs that no name guy). Horrible. If I want to watch some boring, weak a$$ crap then I will start to tune back in to boxing.

  • Dietrich says:

Evans is a tough fight…Tougher than Machida…Even more tough if you aren’t focused…

  • Dietrich says:

    KOuch,
I have changed my political party to Zuffa….
To quote Gibson in Lethal Weapon 2
    Big Smile Big Smile!

  • Rock Solid says:

I don’t know. Evans struggled against Bisping, and Bisping really sucks. Chuck is going to knock him the f$$k out. As far as LHW go, Evans is a second tier fighter not a top tier. Evans would propably be the Affliction LHW champ though. He would proably dominate there, but he just does not have it for the UFC. A few fights ago it seemed like he fizzled out. Maybe just something going on in his personal life, but he is not the same fighter that knocked Salmon and Lambert out.

  • Gonzo says:

    indianaboy,

Dana, the smartest man in MMA? Not!!! Mark Cuban is the smartest. And unlike Dana, he made his own millions many times over on his own. Unlike Dana, who happend to be a childhood friend of Lorenzo Fertitta. And while managing Tito Ortiz, he told Lorenzo he should buy the UFC. Then screws over Tito in the end.

Remember, when Dana convinced the Ferttita brothers to buy PRIDE for $65million? What did they get? The most expensive video library. They didn’t get the fighters. I’m sure Zuffa is still writing off the losses on that deal.

If the UFC doesn’t learn to play nice, co-promote and let fighters appear on other promotions it won’t last.

Mark Cuban, if you haven’t noticed, puts on his own events on HDNet and broadcasts Dream and many other promotions for the masses. He is also the one paying the attorney fees to get Randy Couture released from the UFC’s slavery contract.

  • KOuch says:

    Gonzo,

Mark Cuban is an investor who is going to sell high. As far as MMA he is not smart like Dana in anyway. NO WAY NO HOW! Cuban has done nothing for MMA aside from providing a pretty picture on my television. It seems you dislike Dana but you should remember what he has done for MMA in the USA, Canada, UK and he’ll continue to spread it around like cancer. Buying out Pride was a great move for the UFC. By doing that they got rid of their only competition and a great established promotion. Cuban is a drama queen. Personally I wish he owned one of the sports teams I route for but he is a drama queen. Since when is Cuban the MMA Santa Clause putting on events for the masses!?!? I have to pay extra f-ing MONEY to get that HD ****! Wonder where my money goes……I bet not even a dime goes to Cuban.

  • Gonzo says:

    KOuch,

The PRIDE purchase was a bust.

1.) Have you ever heard of a non-compete? Why are the PRIDE people aloud to create DREAM? If Mark Cuban would have bought PRIDE, those guys wouldn’t be able to watch MMA, much less be involved in it.

2.) The purchase didn’t secure Fedor, Gomi or the other fighters in the deal.

3.) They should have kept PRIDE running in Japan, and bring the fighters back and forth.

  • Dannyboy says:

OMG. HDNet along with all other HD channels costs $6 damn dollars KOuch. Sheesh.

Mark Cuban is a smart man and everything you said was pretty much speculation and opinion not backed up by facts. He IS bringing it to the masses…plain and simple. HDNet costs SIX @#%^ing DOLLARS A MONTH. Not to mention you get 20 other HD channels so you can actually see crap in HD.

Buying PRIDE was just an OK move by the UFC but they paid way too much. It would have only been good had they got Takanori Gomi and Fedor along with everyone else. They didn’t.

  • Dannyboy says:

Oh and this “investor SELL HIGH” crap is total speculation and not sure why you continue to spout it out with no proof or facts to back it. You have no clue what Cuban is going to do in the future. From the interviews on HDNet that I’ve seen he’s here to stay.

  • Dannyboy says:

However, I won’t go so far as to agree that Cuban is better than Dana. I’d love for it to BECOME that way…just not there yet, although he IS better for MMA than Dana White overall.

  • Amanda says:

Hey where can I pay/get my boyfriend the “Affliction Day of Reckoning” poster at?? Please help me!!

    Thanks;
    Amanda
