Nick Diaz Tests Positive for Majijuana

At Pride 33 Nick Diaz (15-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC) literally shocked nearly anyone who follows MMA when he beat Takanori Gomi at PRIDE Fighting Championships’ Pride 33: The Second Coming event in February. Now, according to reports, Diaz flunked a required drug test after the win testing positive for marijuana. All other fighters passed the tests.

The UFC vet did not test positive for any banned substances such as steroids. Marijuana is tested for because it can make the fighter dazed which can be dangerous but more importantly it can lower the fighters perception of pain allowing them to more freely trade punches and putting them in danger during submission attempts.

Other fighters who tested positive for marijuana use recently have been banned from the sport for 6 months and that may very well be the same suspension Diaz receives. His notable UFC fights include wins against Josh Neer and Gleison Tibau and losses to Sean Sherk, Diego Sanchez, and Joe Riggs.

Diaz left the UFC for contracts with PRIDE and EliteXC. His win is in limbo and it may be ruled a no contest or left as a win given that Diaz only tested positive for Marijuana and not a performance enhancing drug.

f that, I have been fighting for many years I am currently in Thailand fighting Muay Thai. I am not a fan of marijuana but being a former smoker I know that it does not improve ones fighting ability, if anything it may make you a little docile. The MMA Community should not make fools of themselves with rulings. You don’t test for alcohol usage, I always believe I fight better after a few beers. common, give us a break the guy trained hard and suprised everyone dont take that from him.

I can’t knock him. He did the impossible with the win under the influence of drugs or not.

What I said was how the committee perceived the affect of marijuana. At best it’s effects are minimal and how the fight went I doubt it had any impact at all.

If Velasquez can finish Herring it would be a big deal and would move Velasquez closer to top contender status. If Herring wins it won’t be a big deal because Herring is the big name, the guy with the experience, but it will earn him another shot at a top contender though.
