James Irvin Tests Positive For Methadone and Oxymorphone
UFC light heavyweight James Irvin has tested positive for methadone and oxymorphone following his first-round TKO loss to Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The positive test was today confirmed to MMAFrenzy.com by Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer.
Both methadone and oxymorphone are commonly prescribed pain killers for moderate to severe pain.
The banned substances, which are considered “Drugs of Abuse” by the NSAC, were detected on a urinalysis drug test conducted by the NSAC following the bout.
Irvin has up to 20 days to request a formal hearing and faces up to a $20,000 fine and suspension.
The NSAC previously announced that all eleven fighters that were tested following the event had tested negative for steroids.

Methadone? As in the “methadone clinic” for drug users? WTF is oxymorphone? I’m going to do some research and I’ll be back but if anyone knows more about these, please enlighten me. Funny how even with the assistance and crutch of those drugs Irvin still got destroyed. Crazy me thought Anderson got lucky.
Oxymorphone (Opana, Numorphan, Numorphone) or 14-Hydroxydihydromorphinone is a powerful semi-synthetic opioid analgesic first developed in Germany circa or about 1914, patented in the USA by Endo Pharmaceuticals in 1955 and introduced to the United States market in January 1959 and other countries around the same time. It is related to morphine in the same fashion that oxycodone is to codeine, is derived from thebaine, and is approximately 6–8 times more potent than morphine.
Irvin has some severe pain obviously. Is he addicted to pain killers???? It seems so. I cannot doubt his pains and aches in his body but rules are rules. Furthermore, 6-8 times more potent than morphine is no f-n joke! You guys ever visit someone in the hospital on morphine? Irvin has a problem….I truly believe that. It is in his best interest to seek help after he gets suspended.
So maybe Silva isn’t that good? Irvin was so high my kid sister could’ve knock him out!

In all seriousness though……Irvin is addicted to pain killers. That is what it seems to be to me considering the potency of his drug choice. I would not be surprised if he likes heroin too.

I hope he enters recovery during his suspension and comes back a better and stronger fighter. It would be a shame to end a career this way.

The drugs were related to Irvin preparing for the aftermath of fighting Silva.
I’ve been on morphine in the hospital and “6-8 times more potent than morphine” is f’n absurd. Seriously ridiculous. I can’t even imagine that. I’ve never heard of Oxymorphone but if what KOuch says is true than that’s some serious sh*t!

Oh and Oxymorphone is as powerful (if not a bit more) as Oxycontin which is pretty darn powerful. Morphine is weak.

I believe Irvin was pulled from a bout a few months back with Rashad Evans because of an injury, no doubt this is pain medication he was prescribed for that. These drugs are not performance enhancers by any means, so these would not have helped him in one bit, and as you all clearly saw on the 19th, they sure as hell didn’t help him. The only thing he did wrong was not divulge that information to the commission.

Does anyone know what the rules in MMA are about perscribed drugs? I don’t mean a doc perscribing steriods but pain killers being illegal even if perscribed? I can see the argument that it could numb the pain you might feel inside the fight but damn. I’ve hurt my back before and taken pain meds and mine are super weak cause they make me nautious and hell, i couldn’t imagion fighting on them! But I wonder if a doc perscribes them if it’s still concidered a failed test.
What about fighters and prozac or things like that?

not taking them would give the guy a lower ability because of the pain, and pain does not allow for training, or even getting into the ring

If the tests were administered after the fights, isn’t it reasonable to think that he was already recieving them from the laceration and ‘face flattening’ he got?

Ethan – It’s possible he may have taken them after the fight but they’re unapproved prescription drugs so whether he took them before or immediately after matters little as he took them before he was drug tested and it was his responsibility to know whether they are approved by the athletic commission.
I suspect the fighters drug test samples are taken very quickly following the bouts so they have little time to take anything that could be illegal and use the time between the end of the bout and the drug test as an excuse.
Anyways it is possible he took them after the fight but in the eyes on the commission it doesn’t matter when he took them, they just know he took them before his drug test.
