Anthony Johnson Undergoes Eye Surgery

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jul 28, 2008 at 3:00 pm ET14 Comments

Anthony JohnsonAnthony Johnson has undergone eye surgery to repair damage from an accidental eye poke he suffered in a TKO loss to Kevin Burns at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19th, Johnson told MMAWeekly.com:

“I had surgery. It was pretty intense for me. My retina was damaged, possibly detached, and the laceration was pretty long. It was basically from one end of my eye to the other. They did laser surgery that took about two hours, put some stitches on it basically.

The doctor said I should be back in the September. So, hopefully you’ll get to see me do my thing in September or October.

Everything should be fine. I’ll go back soon (for a check-up) and they’ll just make sure that I don’t have any infections.”

I hope its a speedy recovery.I hope Burns is denied fights until he gets his hand fixed or retires because there was no need for that to happen in the first place.

  • The Gunslinger says:

i heard rumble will be fighting burns again as soon as he gets back

I’m a fan of this guy. He just has a great attitude. If I were in his position I’d be threatening the eye gougers family with arson. I wish Johnson a painless speedy recovery and cannot wait to see him. This boy is ready to kill and rise to the top. The only thing I see in his game that needs work, is he needs to maybe slow down just a hair….it seems he tends to get a little over excited at times and wild. Then again, maybe it is “killer instinct.”

    The Gunslinger
I don’t know if I would take a rematch…Everyone knows he won and he may have ruined or shortened his career.
    KOuch
I see the speed too. I guess Rigan hasn’t slowed him down yet…I think its like you said… youth…

  • natedogg77 says:

I agree with you guys, no need for a rematch because he won and Burns doesn’t need to fight anymore until his finger is fixed.

What if Anthony would have gone blind in that eye.

  • Cole Miller says:

He needs to work on his conditioning at 170…I know they said he was pretty big for that weight class…but he was strait gasing out in the burns fight…I think that happend in his fight with clementi too….all and all I like watchin this guy, hes pretty exciting but like KOuch said he gets a lil wild sometimes…he just needs to train with some elites and with his atleticism, he should be a pretty good fighter someday

  • KOuch says:

    Nate,

Going blind is a great point. At a local event I went to last year that is pretty much what happened to a 19yr old fighter. He is not completely blind in his eyes but the damage was bad enough to end his MMA career. He’s a great guy who still trains with some of my friends. It’s unfortunate his career was over after 3 fights. I’d be extremely disappointed to not see Johnson in action again. I’m starting to feel that eye gouging needs to be reviewed and possibly a punishable offense. What happened in Johnson’s case and my “associates” is not right. The guy I know got gouged 4 F-N times before he finally went to a knee screaming profanities and the ref called the match. His opponent should have been DQ’d after the second. Something has to change in regards to this. It’s going to happen again and again. I don’t understand guys throwing/flailing their arms around with open hands not fists….unless going for a takedown or clinch.

  • Dietrich says:

It needs to be called the Jon Hess rule.

  • joel b says:

he is an awesome fighter and i didnt get to see the eye poke but it sounds not so accidental but more complacency so best of luck to the rumble

whats up with his appeal did it get approved???

  • Jeremyjackson says:

Eye-gouging is a sweet MMA move. Haven’t you guys seen the Three Stooges? I think Curly could have tapped out Kimbo.

  • KOuch says:

    Dietrich,

Is that how Vitor became champ?

  • Dietrich says:

    Kouch,
LOL I don’t think Jon ever saw Vitor coming….

  • natedogg77 says:

KOuch, that’s a sad story. Things like that make the sport look really bad.

I never like it when a guy gets a finger in the eye and then ends up losing the fight because you never know how bad it affected him.

  • Kaydan says:

    A. J. vs Melvin G….then we will see who’s the rising star…
