Anderson Silva Defeats James IrvinSports fans in Chicago unite! The UFC is coming to town and it is bringing the world’s greatest pound for pound fighter, Anderson “The Spider” Silva, for a middleweight title fight against his number one contender, Patrick “The Predator” Cote. The UFC will make its historic first trip to Chicago this fall when it presents UFC 90: SILVA vs. COTE live from Allstate Arena on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008.

“Anderson Silva once again showed why he’s the greatest pound for pound fighter in the world when he moved up to light heavyweight and destroyed James “The Sandman” Irvin,” said Dana White, UFC President. “Now he drops back down to middleweight to defend his world title against Patrick Cote, a fighter on a four-fight win streak with a style that guarantees an incredible fight, wherever it goes. There is no better way to introduce Chicago to the UFC than with the championship fight Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote.”

Tickets for UFC 90: SILVA vs. COTE will go on sale Monday, August 18 at 10am CT starting at $50. Tickets will be available at Allstate Arena Box Office, all Ticketmaster Ticket Centers, Charge-By-Phone at (312) 559-1212 or online at ticketmaster.com.

UFC Fight Club members will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to this event Friday, August 15 at 10am CT via the website www.ufc.com. A special Internet ticket pre-sale will be available to UFC newsletter subscribers Sunday, August 17 starting at 10am CT. To access this presale, users must register for the UFC newsletter through www.ufc.com.

UFC 90: SILVA vs. COTE is available live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.95 for standard definition or high-definition broadcasts (where available).

It took Silva (22-4) just 61 seconds to defeat his last opponent, James “The Sandman” Irvin at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas July 19, but that is par for the course for “The Spider”, who burst on to the UFC scene two years ago. His list of victims started with a devastating knockout of Chris Leben in June 2006. He followed that up with two TKOs over Rich Franklin, a submission win over Travis Lutter, a TKO over Nate Marquardt and a second round submission over PRIDE 183-pound champion Dan Henderson. Silva, considered by most to be the most dominant force the UFC middleweight division has ever seen, now faces number one middleweight contender Patrick “The Predator” Cote.

“It’s an honor to be fighting Patrick Cote in the first UFC event ever in Chicago,” said Silva. “I’m excited to take on Cote, but I am taking him very seriously; he is a dangerous striker and he likes to stand and trade with his opponents. That’s the kind of fight fans like to see, and that’s definitely the fight we’re going to give them Oct. 25.”

Cote, (14-4) fighting out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is on a four fight win streak in the Octagonâ„¢, beginning his string of excellence back in February of 2007 with a decision win over Scott Smith at UFC 67. Six months later, he TKO’d Kendall Grove in the first round at UFC 74, and followed that up with a first round TKO over and Drew McFedries at UFC Fight Night in January 2008. But it was his most recent victory, a pivotal win over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86 on July 5th that propelled him to number one contender status. Now Cote has the opportunity to join countryman Georges St-Pierre as the UFC’s second Canadian titleholder by taking out reigning champion Silva at UFC 90.

“Everybody that fought Anderson Silva was scared of him; I’m not scared of him one bit,” said Cote. “It’s gonna take him 10 straight punches to take me down – I only need one punch to take him down. I’m Patrick Cote, I win against grapplers and I knock strikers out. I can’t wait to go to Chicago and take the belt home to Montreal.”

The remaining bouts for UFC 90 will be announced in the near future.

  • Tspence says:

well its confirmed, cote gets knocked out in the first round on october 25th. poor guy

  • Andrew Mickelson says:

This is a joke. there is no way cote deserves this shot, and no matter how funny its going to be watching him get put to sleep i would rather have seen silva vs machida at 205 to determine a numer one comntender.

  • JOHNBOY says:

cote trying to kid himself a bit there i think, he has zero chance in my opinion but hey this is mma an cote defo has knock out power, he cant win this tho…can he?

  • KOuch says:

    Johnboy,

NO! Go eat one of them butty sandwich deals and rethink the part where you said and thought, “can he?” F NO! Cote is going to get hurt bad that night. Cote is going to feel pain very few men on the planet have ever felt but those who have now suffer from PTSD and other mental disorders. It’s going to be joyfully disturbing.

  • Chavezz says:

Well put KOuch it well be nice to see silva destroy him but i want to see Anderson silva vs fedor

  • del says:

I like Cote, and i’m pulling for him, but he better bring a gun if he wants to win. Could be a bigger upset than than serra vs st.pierre 1 if he wins though

  • segablack says:

Go Cote someones gotta bet silva it might as well be him he going to have all odds against him and if hes to do this it’s going to take one hell of punch to ok that guy if i where him silva proved to be weaker on the ground and hes lost all his matches on the ground so i hope to see the fight go there!

  • rhymeskill15 says:

for some reason riiight when “del” mentioned serra vs. st. pierre…i envisioned cote running around the octagon with his hands up after knocking out silva…………..

but then i came back to reality…silva by ko in the 3rd round!!

  • Tmoney says:

Quote/truth of the day: Silva vs. Cote will be “joyfully disturbing.”

  • Chavezz says:

“joyfully disturbing.” quote of the day no qoute of the year

  • Daddy Lupo says:

I admire so much the killer that is Anderson Silva but im from Montreal and like the american do so well I will Cheer the hell up for Côté. This guy is really tough and we will see a upset live.

My predictions is that he’s gonna take a beating for half of the fight then Silva will drop his hand and will pay for it. Côté by KO in the second.

  • JustJoe says:

Quote of the year is Bj Penn’s “Sean Sherk, yer dead!”

“Joyfully disturbing” is a close 2nd though lol.

  • Dietrich says:

I am glad “The Windy City” is getting a taste of UFC action but the main event should have been held in an Aztec temple because it is a human sacrifice…Patrick Cote goes three minutes…

  • The Gunslinger says:

    cotttttteeee……cotttttteeeeeee…..cotttttteeeeee….cottteeeeeee…coteeee.cote!

  • The Gunslinger says:

    cote will win this fight!

  • JOHNBOY says:

ok KOuch i no cote is guna get his arse handed to him on a plate, just like i knew gsp was guna do the same to serra (1st fight) an like i knew liddell was guna walk throw jardine i could go on but i think u get my drift.

but come on i have to fill my head with all sorts of magical outcomes other wise why would i want to watch something i no the outcome to? this is why i love mma anything can happen.

  • Jeremyjackson says:

What a joke of a main event. When Silva KOs Cote he should be arrested for Abusing the Clinically Retarded.

  • The Gunslinger says:

jeremy arent you in jail man?

  • Jeremyjackson says:

Yeah. It totally sucks in here. Hopefully Leben comes back soon and chokes out my cellmate. He snores.

  • richardo says:

patrick cote is a tough dude, n i think he will shock the mma world with his knockout power

  • The Gunslinger says:

sweet nice talkin to ya jeremy..dont drop the soap

  • BOB says:

You ever see what someone looks like that just got hit in the face with a sledge hammer. You will when Cote catches Silva. 2nd round KO.

  • Arnold Darkshner says:

Silva just fought a power puncher who is bigger and stronger then Cote. Plus Cote has never really impressed me, I say Silva TKO in mid-2nd round.

  • Pat says:

heres how it goes silva kills cote it the first round literaly… and david loiseau comes back to the ufc to avenge his freinds death

  • Nate Dogg77 says:

This is a real disappointment for the Chicago show. I had planed on going to my first UFC event but now I am reconsidering.

Like all you guys said, this is a Joke of a main event. I would love to see Anderson Silva fight in person against someone who stood even a 25% chance of winning but this is just bad.

I was hoping Wandy would be on the card because he is due to fight this fall, I would think.

  • Jeremyjackson says:

They should throw Wanderlei versus Shogun on this card.

  • Nate Dogg77 says:

^ I don’t think Joe Silva would make that match happen unless they were both so close to the title at the same time that it would be a #1 contender match. Shogun is 2 big wins away from a title shot right now.

  • KOuch says:

    JeremyJackson,

What you did is just wrong….just wrong! But, who am I to judge? May I ask what was going through your head and how the F do you get internet access?

  • KOuch says:

If Cote wins I’m going to feel very strange. Joyfully disturbed….mostly disturbed. I think the second anyone beats Fedor, Silva, Penn or Faber I will be pretty f-n pissed off. Not that I want to be a front runner but in the fight game I enjoy watching domination. I’d much rather someone other than Cote beat Silva if anyone….I’m just not sure who….an overweight midget or GSP perhaps.

  • Jeremyjackson says:

    KOuch,

Don’t knock it till ya try it. I get internet access in the library. The tater tots here are delicious.

  • The Gunslinger says:

if cote wins…it will be the biggest upset ever!……but i know silva has got this one…first round submission…i think silva will pull off a rnc on this night instead of a knockout…..i say this because irvin is a better striker but he didnt come out and just run at silva and swing for the fences….cote on the other i think will just charge at silva and swing…and in a scrabble silva will land on top of cote….then silva will start with some GNP and then cote will roll over and silva will sink in thee old RNC

  • sam says:

Cote not even in the top 12 Middleweights

    1. Silva
    2. Okami
    3. Franklin
    4. D. Henderson
    5. Bisping
    6. Kampmann
    7. T. Leites
    8. Marquardt
    9. Kimmons
    10. J. Mcdonald
    11. Leben
    12. Maia

  • joel b says:

i understand that cote is a fighter and needs to be confident but dang he is a little big headed and I am sorry for canada no title for you except the WW that is

  • ufcmanz says:

See Cote skill sets reminds me alot of “James Irvin” and “Chris Leben” Its not a matter if Cote can Win its a matter if Cote can even land a punch because if you go look at the Leben and Irvin fight there was only one leg kick landed. If Cote cann’t land a punch he has no chance. I’d say Silva at 1:50 first round By “death by knees”

  • Dietrich says:

    ufcmanz,
The comparison of Cote,Irvin,Leben is spot on…
    Nice work…

  • Nate Dogg77 says:

I don’t know what is up with Joe Silva and these matches. Cote v. Silva is as bad as Liddell v. Evans.

Liddell vs. Thiago Silva would be a great fight!

  • Dietrich says:

Liddell Evans will ignite Atlanta almost as well as Sherman did…

  • Jeremyjackson says:

I see Cote shrieking “Mercy! Mercy!” Through split lips but the ref doesn’t stop it ’cause he thinks Patrick is saying “thanks”.

  • old glory says:

Arlovski is a man, bottom line. give him a shot, he wont dissapoint. I agree with ufcmanz Cote = “death by knees”.

  • tspence says:

i would love to see cote win, being canadian and all i always boost canadian boys. but… i fear the worst for him, hell be swingin bombs so maybe one will land. if not. down he goes. and silva dances and prepares for a lhw fight in 2 months

  • Pete90 says:

nothing wrong with liddell v rashad both top contenders.

What about Yushin Okami??? C’mon this guy would beat Cote anyday, they should fight then the winner should get a title shot.

Cannot wait for Machida v Thiago silva…Lets see how ‘elusive’ machida can be on october 18th

  • kelvin says:

yeah i think after cote’s last crappy performance, he should at least have to fight okami for a definite title shot. i’d like to see him vs. bisping too. in the meantime, the spider could take a few more fight at lhw.

  • Dannyboy says:

I think this proves that the UFC isn’t always about the best fights. They are about building up a fighter with BS matches and then giving easy ones to the champs just like most of you claim the other promotions are doing.

    What comes around, goes around.

Silva vs Cote is a total BS match.
Machida vs Thiago best one on the card.

If only Rich Franklin stood a chance. He’s just hanging around till someone takes the title so he can then try and take it. Think anyone will take the title without a fix being in? I don’t think so.

  • E-ROC says:

    No Yushin Okami??

  • Kris Karkoski says:

Okami re-injured his hand but will likely get the next title shot after Cote.

  • natedogg77 says:

I hope Thiago can pull a sub of his back and catch Lyoto. Tito may have exposed a weakness.

  • Mikew says:

All you morons whining about Cotes last fight dont know **** about MMA, the last few fights he had he won by KO in the first round, not enough for you guys though.
It is possible that Almeidas JJ is better than Silva even, and he managed to not get submitted, a quality win.

  • KOuch says:

    Mikew,

Cote’s last fight was boring dude. That is my opinion on his last fight along with many other people. I do not believe that has anything to do with our overall knowledge of MMA. Cote is good but not Anderson Silva good. I see Cote getting hurt. To me this match up would be like Fedor fighting Rothwell or a 300lbs dwarf.

  • Cotes Gone put to sleep for sure says:

Goin down Cote better run like Caleb and he will still get killed

  • Nice Del: “the only way cote will win is if he brings a gun”

That’s about it: no one is gonna beat this guy at 185 unless H. Yoshida drops to 185 and joins ufc.

  • jack muller says:

Andeson will win, TKO. the only guy that can beat him for the middleweight title is GSP, yes you heard me GSP!. GSP will destroy Fitch and challenge silva. I think the ICe MAN will give silva trouble in the LHW division-SILVA will destroy FORREST. MARK MY WORDS! GSP WILL GO DOWN AS THE BEST FIGHTER OF ALL TIME!. he will beat silva and bj penn and maybe the LHW champ. when PENN fought him and lost by split decision, now GSP is 5 times better. he will get better. guys like silva and penn they can only improve their conditioing, GSP can improve his strength, skills, all aspects.

  • KOuch says:

I was just watching the Silva/Irvin fight again and when Silva caught Irvin’s kick then punched his face, Irvin died for a split second. Yes, he DIED! If you watch closely, you can see Irvin’s soul pop out of his ear rom Silva’s punch on contact. Silva’s punch took the life out of Irvin. I know Cote has KO power but nothing compared to the death strike of Silva. I’m tellin’ you guys…watch Irvin get punched by Silva in slow motion if you have that function on your TV. It’s f-d up but funny how he just dropped with a facial expression that screamed, “why GOD!? why did I get punched in my face so hard my balls hurt and I want to take a ****! Why does it feel like my spline has grown legs and is kicking me from the inside. Is this drain bamage? Why me?”

  • corey #3 says:

silva is goin to destroy cote.then hell mve up to light heavy weight and destroy everyone in tht division.silva is tha greatest fighter ever.o if he fights gsp he will hve two titles. gsp is a joke silva ia for real

  • Dietrich says:

    :)

I think if I see that picture of Anderson one more time I will have to pull for Cote.
Cote and Leben are supposed to do the direct to dvd Stepbrothers 2 aren’t they?
