Diego and Fitch better be afraid of going to the ground with Shields should it ever happen. They have both been there and lost. The true test would be to see what kind of game plan they would bring to avoid the ground and keep it standing. Shields main problem is he is not popular and fighting for Elite. Dana White even said, other/smaller promotions are needed to get guys experience before coming to the UFC. That is definitely the case with Shields. I'm still amazed how you guys keep saying Fitch, Kos and whoever else keep getting better but for some reason do not recognize Shields as someone training just as hard and also getting better. Shield is not even in his prime yet. It's is totally unfair and pointless to mention Kimbo and Scott Smith in the same sentence as Shields. Shields talent is superior to those guys. We all know Elite is a ghetto shithole of MMA promotions but what do you expect fighters to do when they are trying to gain experience and make it to the top? Turn down a promotion because they are not the UFC? Just because a fighter is not in the UFC does not make him a bum. You will all see the wrath of Shields soon enough and I will gladly open the doors to the bandwagon. Gunslinger will have to sit in the very back though.

people can criticize the talent in elite xc, but you cant deny the fact that they were good fights. i was very impressed by the show as a whole. the fights came quicker and had good endings.

I agree that an MMA fighter NEEDS a ground game. I don't discredit the ground as a need at all in MMA.

What I'm saying is there are several fighters who come with extremely decorated backgrounds in grappling and do not do well in MMA because of the striking element. You have time when your on your back with full guard to work a choke or an arm bar or use hip movement for a sweep because your opponent is only working for their own submission in grappling contests. When your working for those things and someones elbow is bashing you in the head you had better move, block, or get a hurry on that submission and that can rush things for top grapplers.

Looking at the champions out there

Fedor - amazing sub grappler, good wreslter, great striker

A. Silva - amazing striker, great sub grappler, good wreslter.

GSP - amazing wrestler, great striking, good sub grappler.

Penn - amzing sub grappler, greater striker, good wresler

So you can see how the greats have a little of all of that. but you can't say that Shields will be a top mma fightr through his bJJ background. I agree that will make him very good, and dangerous on the ground to a lot of other fighters, but I don't see Fitch, Penn, GSP and Kos and Diego being afraid of going to the ground against Shields. I also don't think Shields will get the right type of quality opponents to really show he's ready for those names listed above in Elite XC. When their MW championship has Scott Smith giving their champion a run for his money and Kimbo being protected by the Refferee's and fed bums all the time it shows a little about the promotions.

DannyBoy,

Wouldn't a 4 man royal rumble be great with GSP, Fedor, Silva and Penn? One cage, 4 men all fighting for themselves.......Never would happen but that would be the coolest thing I've ever seen. I think Gunslinger should go train with Shields.

One other thing... I still agree with Kouch that Shields has the potential to be a top contendor in the sport...not just in some promotion that everyone here dislikes.

It will be interesting to see what happens when some big name UFC fighters come off contract and are looking for more money that someone else may be willing to pay them.

DannyBoy,

You're such a KIMBO! Why don't you Sylvia your mother! Your bashing is always in good humor. The difference with Gunslinger is, he got mad and started name calling then throwing out insults. I've enjoyed discussing MMA with Gunslinger for a while now. For some reason he got angry and verbally abusive over this topic. I forgive him.....he is such a Diaz.
