Just a few weeks ago it was believed UFC 74 would be held in Albuquerque but new information makes it almost certain that the event will be held in Las Vegas. Adding to the legitimacy of the most recent rumored location is that it has been confirmed by UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture as well as by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).
First, Randy Couture revealed the location in his recent interview with Newsday. Here’s what “The Natural” had to say when he was asked if his title defense against Gabriel Gonzaga had been set:
“August 25th in Vegas. I don’t think they have a venue yet.”
This confirmation has since been furthered as the event is now appearing on the official NSAC website. The site lists the event for August 25th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena with a 5:00 pm start time.
The biggest question that has now been raised is over whether Diego Sanchez (who was rumored on the card when Albuquerque was announced as the likely location) is still on the card. In either case the card is stacked and should be another UFC blockbuster and a great follow-up to UFC 73. Here’s the current rumored card:
- Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga (Heavyweight Championship Match)
- Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck
- Tim Sylvia vs. Frank Mir
- Joe Stevenson vs. Kurt Pellegrino
- Diego Sanchez vs. TBD
