Affliction “Banned” Recap: Fedor Submits Sylvia In 36 Seconds

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jul 20, 2008 at 11:42 am ET42 Comments

Affliction Banned PosterFormer PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko cemented his status as the world’s top heavyweight and one of its best pound-for-pound fighters with a 36-second victory over former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in the main event of Affliction “Banned”.

The ten-bout event took place on Saturday, July 19th, in front of a sold out crowd of 13,988 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Sylvia came out punching at the opening of the bout but just seconds in Emelianenko floored Sylvia with several quick-but-powerful punch combinations. On the ground Fedor continued the barrage, pounding on Sylvia before sinking in hooks and securing a rear naked choke that forced Sylvia to tap out just 36 seconds into the championship contest.

Emelianenko, long-regarded as the best heavyweight but doubted over the strength of his opponents, was crowned the first-ever WAMMA heavyweight champion following the first-round submission victory while Sylvia looks to regroup after dropping his second straight bout and third of his past four.

“You never know how short or long the fight will be, but I just wanted to end it as quickly as possible. I just wanted to show the fans my skills,” said Fedor following the victory. “I would be very honored to fight Randy Couture.”

“I was amazed at how good he is. The guy’s a stud. I don’t think he’s human. He’s incredible. I don’t think anybody’s going to beat him for a while,” remarked Sylvia following the defeat.

Former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski displayed superior striking in his matchup with IFL standout Ben Rothwell, stopping his opponent with a right-uppercut combination early in the third round to earn the knockout victory.

“I think they got their money’s worth tonight. I did a lot of work on my boxing,” said Arlovski following the knockout win. “I want to fight Fedor, Josh or anybody Affliction chooses.”

Following a slow first round between Josh Barnett and Pedro Rizzo the pace picked up in the second as both fighters were content to trade. Barnett connected with a vicious left hook that dropped Rizzo to the canvas and finished him off with several more shots on the ground before Referee Herb Dean halted the bout at 1:44 of the second.

After a paced opening frame featherweight Mark Hominick submitted Savant Young via armbar at 4:25 of the second.

Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Renato “Babalu” Sobral was victorious in his return, defeating Mike Whitehead via unanimous decision by utilizing crisp and accurate striking.

Matt Lindland overwhelmed Fabio Negao to earn a unanimous decision victory with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26.

“He was so damn tough. He was the real deal,” said Lindland of his opponent following the bout.

As expected, heavy favorite Antonio Rogerio Nogueira stopped Edwin Dewees with a combination at 4:06 of the opening round.

Vitor Belfort stopped Terry Martin in the second round of their middleweight contest with a flying knee followed by an uppercut-left combination that collapsed Martin into the ropes.

Paul Buentello was unable to finish off late replacement Gary Goodridge but did enough to earn a unanimous decision victory.

Mike Pyle defeated JJ Ambrose with a rear naked choke at 2:51 of the opening round.

A scheduled bout between Ray Lamaza and Justin Levens was canceled due to time constraints but both fighters were paid their base salary as well as a bonus.

ok this isn’t any diffrent to the other story, how come herb dean was reffing didn’t think dana would let him unless he quit or been fired?

  • JOHNBOY says:

silva would take him out mate, stop kiddin ur self no one can stop silva maybe BJ PENN but thats about it

  • jpm says:

No way johnboy, Fedor is the man. He’s a Beast From The East !!!!!!!!!!

  • JEF says:

I hope everyone sees why People talk about Fedor with the respect they do, he is the best there has ever been in MMA and he is an example of the mistake the UFC has made. I know the Affliction PPV might not have done well I’m not sure but I get the feeling more big names like Ortiz will be showing up and after successful fights like Little Nog’s, Barnetts, Arlovski’s , Belforts, and Fedor’s more people are going to recognize and invest in this stuff, like the UFC, Affliction may have even lost a little bit of money, but most mma organizations do to start off, and with such a good product I see them making profit soon. I hope all the fighters involved in affliction stay with them to keep this thing going along

  • Brandon says:

Ok I will be the first to admit I was wrong. I completely expected a snoozefest Sylvia victory and it was great to see Fedor come out in such dominating fashion. Sylvia really does have a weak chin! He’s been dropped by AA, Randy and Fedor. Great job by Fedor in finishing the fight

And refs are allowed to ref any organization Johnboy, they are employed by the athletic commission not the UFC

  • Dave, Md says:

I have to give it to Fedor but I do have a question and that is how would he be in the Cage, cause I know the cage fight is different than a ring

  • Charlesie says:

The only thing left to talk about is when and how that Fedor VS. Randy fight is going to happen. I have heard some talk about how to Affliction event was produced, and I have to say it was an exciting event, and anyone who saw it got every penny’s worth! There is no talk that changes the fact that Fedor has arrived, he destroyed, and no one is going to beat the man. Randy is in deep shiznit. Fedor had a lot of people in that arena talking out loud for minutes after that fight. Everyone clears out of the UFC events. Those people in Anaheim saw something extraordinary, and stayed and felt something new and different. They were a part of the truth. Fedor is the truth, Affliction brought him to us, and we should support Affliction and be appreciative of it. How anyone could dispute how great and impressive that was is beyond me. I can’t wait to see Fedor fight again. I will always purchase any PPV MMA event no matter what brand, and not complain, because these guys put it out there when they fight, and they deserve our respect. All this negative talk from people is retarded because they’re dogging the brutal choices these pro fighters make, which is to fight. The promotional brands support these fighters, and that is well enough for me to support them. Let’s give credit to Affliction and to the UFC, and let’s look forward to more great events. Last night was better than any night of MMA, and was great for the fans and fighters. Quit all the talk about it, and let’s get this Fedor/Randy fight going..

  • The Rob says:

Fedor vs Randy Couture will be happening on new year’s. Of course, nothing has been announced but affliction knows that the UFC will have an epic card and will need something to rival it. The only fight that would make me purchase affliction AND UFC for new years is to have Couture fight Emilianenko. When’s Randy’s UFC contract up? I believe it’s later this year…

  • jpm says:

    Charlsie

In other words, you like mma, Fedor is a ****ing monster, and you read enjoy poetry and the works of shakespeare !!!! “Part of a truth” man please, have a word with yourself.

  • JOHNBOY says:

    cheers brandon dint no that.

u think fedor would beat silva jpm? i think fedor could make 205? that would make some great matches in the ufc

  • Kris Karkoski says:

The referees are not affiliated with a specific promotion.

  • jpm says:

Yeah, I reckon so pal. The guys only lost once, and that was on a cut, caused by an illegal elbow that the ref didn’t spot. Silva was amazing last night but for me I didn’t learn anything new, I wish it had gone a bit longer so we could at least gage how he might get on against a higher ranked LH opponent.

  • JOHNBOY says:

yeah thats wat me n me cousen was saying last night, i want to him go past the 2nd round to see if hes still as good as the first 2, sure he is but u never no, forrest would be a good fight for him some1 whos going to hit and move.

  • Kris Karkoski says:

Fedor would likely beat Silva because Silva’s a natural middleweight and Fedor is a heavyweight. There’s no reason to debate a fight between two fighters the are two weight classes apart, even if they are the top pound-for-pound fighters.

  • JOHNBOY says:

fedor could make 205 an silva has proven he can make 205 so theres a weight they could fight at there

  • joel b says:

tim slyvia is a wanger thats just it i cant believe he got spanked like that i know fedor is good but geez it sucks knowing that tim didnt even put up a fight. anyone watch and enjoy the card last night? i missed it.

  • Semesy says:

Affliction’s production/presentation was shoddy. I hate the whole metal band thing, and the commentary…ugh. UFC wins out in that category 10/10 times.

I didn’t think either card turned out that strong to be honest. I’d say Affliction had an overall better card, but when it came to the main events, neither had me impressed. I mean come on, let’s be honest, Irvin didn’t stand a chance. And he certainly lived up to that. And big Timmy Sylv has never really impressed me, so the dismantling by Fedor didn’t surprise.

  • Tspence says:

im prettysure randy had a 4 fight contract, and he only fought 2.timmer and gonzaga. so ufc wont let him go until he fights 2 more. so maybe if ufc realizes what they lost with fedor in affliction, they could easily get fedor in the ufc to fight randy. randys still on contractwith ufc and affliction has open contracts, fedor can fight anywhere so they would be stupid not to have him fight there.if randy signs with anyone else though dana would screw him over bigtime

  • Dietrich says:

Double feature letdown…I like the staging of the UFC better I felt like I was watching FSN not something FSN was carrying and that is big.Affliction had a WVC feel…

  • The Rob says:

some of the arguments on here are ridiculous… kind of like saying, yeah, it’s only a million dollars…

You want Anderson Silva to go deep into his fights to prove he’s a better fighter? Doesn’t the best fighter get the fight done as quickly as possible? Everyone on here was saying that ‘Irvin is no joke’ and that he had a legit chance at beating Silva. Then Silva does what I knew he would and suddenly it’s a joke that he was facing off against a no chance opponent like Irvin?

And for the record, I’m a HUGE Anderson Silva fan, but Fedor would whoop him. Did anyone notice how completely expression-less fedor was when applying all his power for that choke? The guy doesn’t even apply himself and dominates his fight with a top ranked heavyweight in only 36 seconds? Sylvia sucks, yes, but Fedor is just on a whole other level. He’s going to dominate Couture when it happens.

And side note, why isn’t the UFC champ considered the mma heavyweight champion of the world? The UFC has been around forever, and suddenly this brand new organization has the ‘World Alliance MMA Heavyweight championship of the world? Granted, Affliction’s HW division is 10X better than the UFC’s, but still… why?

  • Tspence says:

well correct me if im wrong but is m-1 not from out east? they might consider it that because of a company from out east and american comapanies went together to make it happen, whereas ufc is its own american company. but really does anyone know specifically where m-1 originated?

  • Tspence says:

    the rob,

m-1 is from russia and they joined with adrenaline mma to create adrenaline mma/m-1 global. then with them two teaming up with affliction and affliction teaming up with trump they decided thats enough to call it the world alliance mma championship. makes sense but your right ufc has been around forever, and obviously cause were going onto ufc 87 in a few weeks

  • mmafan says:

Fedor is king, couture has watched too many Rocky movies. Anderson silva is the only one who has a chance to beat fedor.

Fedor will never fight at 205 so get off the crack-he’ll only fight AS at a catchweight match.

  • Dannyboy says:

Other than stupid sound problems and some obvious commentary flaws (Big John did GREAT, however) I think the Affliction card DOMINATED the UFC card. The Brandon Vera fight I fell asleep on and it was supposed to be one of the best fights of the night. SNOOOOZE. All the heavyweights with the exception of Buentello looked good and, of cousre, Fedor looked GREAT. If Affliction can keep up with the HW dominance we may see some lower prices on ALL MMA promotions thanks to some good competition. Anyone have a problem with paying $30 instead of $40 for an MMA event? I know I don’t.

  • SOLO says:

    how about kimbo vs fedor???/

  • SOLO says:

or even Tim sylvia vs kimbo?

  • FixXeR says:

Well..I dont think its that Tim is a bad fighter….I just think Fedor is the best in the world. Wow, that was amazing. I called Tim winning…I was way off.

  • M3 says:

As it stands right now Fador is to fight in Japan on New Years Eve vs. a TBA aka. Randy Couture that is if the ufc does not have him up in court on some stall tactic. because if i can remember randy’s contract with the ufc end in October of this year so if everything works out he will fight on new years. i got all this from Fight Sport Meg. issue #11 they had a hole thing on Fedor, anyways yeah on new years i dont know whos putting it on Probably Dream since its in Japan but maybe multi orgs to put that on like M-1, Affliction and dream to put that fight together!

  • Dannyboy says:

Isn’t it nice to have co-promotions on fights? Promotions working together ala WAMMA is indeed a good thing.

I’d love to see the PPV numbers for Affliction. I hope they did really well so maybe, just maybe Dana will realize the end of a UFC ONLY MMA world is only a few more EliteXC/Affliction shows away.

I’m not rooting FOR other organizations as much as I am rooting AGAINST Dana White and his crooked tactics to keep UFC at the top.

I will go off what someone else said earlier and say that Affliction should have a heavyweight tournament where the winner fights Fedor, assuming they could get him to agree to that. Heck all organizations should have a Heavyweight Tournament with their top representative going to another tournament to determine the winner. So what if they leave the UFC out. The HW division in the UFC is piss poor anyway.

  • Spud says:

If Randy cant fight New Years, they should have Fedor vs. Arlovski. That would be an awsome fight, that either could win. Even if that fight goes to the ground AA has won a Sambo championship so he can fight on the ground, unlike Timmy. Both cards were good, Affliction was a step above though. THis will probably be the next card they have Fedor vs. Randy, Arlovski vs. Barnett, Timmy vs. Rothwell. Or maybe they’ll spread it out over a couple cards. Belfort looked great at 185, I hope to see him fight again soon.

  • JAI says:

Fedor is a MONSTER man! I wonder want Couture is thinking now after watching Fedor totally dismantle a man in 36 seconds that he had to go 5 rounds with. Fedor has the total package. It’s sooo clear that Fedor and Andersen Silva are by far the two best fighters in the world HANDS DOWN! At this point it’s to hard to rank one above the other. They’re both Awesome.

Affliction put on a great card! I can’t wait to see how they’re PPV numbers were. Not sure if they hit the numbers they wanted to hit, but the word will get out that they are putting on great shows and have big name credible fighters on their roster and they can’t only get bigger and better from here on out. Donald Trump has enough money to front the new league until they start actually making some money so, them not doing well on this first PPV wont be that big of a deal right now.

  • Ryan in NY says:

A question I’d have is if Fedor and Anderson Silva lose any marketing value (Silva more than Fedor probably due to the frequency of his fights) because who would really want to pay $40 to see him fight another 185 lb-er, knowing that Silva would destroy them. Like Silva v Cote… does that really appeal to anyone? What 185 lb fighter could fight Silva and make it a marketable match-up?

  • jpm says:

    ryan in ny

    Bisping !!!!!!!!!!

Thats’s hugely marketable. All us brits would love to see him fight for the title and most of our american brothers want to see Bisping have his ass handed to him (which wouldn’t happen of course). I’m sure we’d all pay for that

  • Triple H says:

Where can i watch the affliction banned online for free at

  • Triple H says:

    Its really free?

  • jpm says:

Sure is pal, i’ve watched all the bouts a few times now and all for free

  • Cvkid says:

Aleks got hep B that’s why they didn’t let him fight.

  • Tspence says:

maybe thats why fedor wanted to hurt someone so fast, maybe he looked at silvya and thought he WAS hep b… kind of like how russel crowe fought a man with cancer so he could beat up cancer..(south park quote hehe, need a lighten-upper after hearing that news!!)

  • insisor says:

Unfortunately as much as I like Bisping there is 0 chance of him beating Silva. Bisping couldn’t even finish Matt Hamill and only won a controversial descision that many thought should have gone Hamill’s way. A Silva vs Bisping fight is one that I would not pay to see as i believe it would be as interseting as the rest of silva’s fights.

  • Pinoymma says:

anderson is good but dont compare him to fedor.. its a total different class.. he will get his ass whoop and might not even think of fighting In MMA again ever.

  • crockpot says:

wow u fkn idiots dont know anything about mma reading these comments pissed me off what dumbasses. first off “JOHNBOY” get the fuk off the website, anderson silva would get completely destroyed by fedor u fkn retard. couture doesnt stand a chance either.
