It would appear an athletic commission may be coming to South Dakota. Governor Dennis Daugaard has moved to sign a bill to construct a commission to regulate boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. The bill in question was passed with a 50-20 vote.
A similar motion was passed in 2009, but funds were not put in place for the creation of the commission, making potential commissioners financially liable for their expenses. That law expired this past July.
Until now, combat sports promoters have been responsible for the safety measures at their events. Daugaard has reportedly secured $95,000 of start-up funds for the new commission, thus putting an end to unregulated combat sports in the state of South Dakota.
