In an interesting twist, UFC featherweight champion José Aldo will receive a lightweight title shot with a win over Anthony Pettis. The two are set to square off on August 3 at an a currently undecided location. Brazilian site Tatame first reported the deal on Monday night.
Aldo was originally not thrilled with the idea of facing Pettis according to UFC president Dana White. The lightweight title shot was the main bargaining chip to placate the champion’s camp.
Aldo’s opponent, Anthony Pettis, was awarded number one contender status in the lightweight division with a devastating knockout victory over Donald Cerrone at UFC on Fox 6. The lightweight would then call out the featherweight champ following Aldo’s UFC victory over Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 and the bout was simply too good for the UFC not to make.
