Stay tuned to MMAFrenzy for continuing coverage of tonight’s UFC 157 fight card including recaps, play-by-play, and more.
Schaub Defeats Johnson
It was not pretty, but it was effective. Brendan Schaub exposed Lavar Johnson’s lack of takedown defense in the final prelim of the evening. While Johnson was able to recover and prevent Schaub from finishing the fight on the ground, it was inability to stop a takedown that cost him this bout.
Chiesa Taps Kuivanen
The Ultimate Fighter 15 champion, Mike Chisea, fought tonight for the first time since winning the tournament last May. Chisea showed improved striking in the first round but it was the second round that saw the “Maverick” take control. Chisea took Anton Kuivanen’s back in a scramble in the second round and sunk in a rear-naked choke. While the Finnish fighter would survive the initial attempt, Chisea would readjust and quickly notch the victory to stay perfect as a pro.
Bermudez Tops Grice in a “Fight of the Year” Candidate
Earlier in the week UFC president Dana White warned the fighters that more cuts were coming and featherweights Dennis Bermudez and Matt Grice fought like their jobs depended on it. The two fighters bookended the fight with near finishes by both fighters, with Grice dropping Bermudez with a massive left hook in the first and Bermudez rocking Grice multiple times in the third.
The fight all came down to the scoring of the extremely close second round. While Grice held the advantage early, Bermudez would battle back in the round and apparently did enough to gain the nod.
Stout Edges Fodor
Strikeforce import Caros Fodor’s UFC debut was spoiled tonight by Sam Stout. “Hands of Stone’s” evolving game was the difference in tonight’s bout. While Fodor cracked Stout with brutal punches throughout the night and landed some takedowns as well, Stout prevented Fodor from ever gaining a clear advantage in exchanges. In the end, Stout pulled off the hard-fought split decision victory.
- Brendan Schaub def. Lavar Johnson via unanimous decision (30-27,30-27,30-27)
