As Bellator invaded the Maverick Center in Salt Lake City, Utah for their 90th promotional offering, the organization brought the semifinals of the season 8 welterweight tournament with them. The tournament saw Douglas Lima and Ben Saunders advance to the finals, where they will square off in a rematch of teammates for the right to face Ben Askren for his title.
Douglas Lima punched his card to the Bellator Welterweight Tournament Finals, along with the head of Bryan Baker. The Brazilian fighter easily implemented his game plan as “The Beast” seemed content to stand, much to his detriment. The legs of Baker seemed to have a giant red target drawn on them as the kicks of the ATT product would bend them, repeatedly. It was the hands of Lima that did the real damage though, as Baker opened up, one giant sledgehammer of an overhand right came down on the head of the American. Baker crumbled to the mat and covered up in the fetal position as the referee called for mercy, halting the bout at 2:34 of the opener.
When Ben Saunders faced Raul Amaya on the preliminary portion of the bill, it was a walloping by “Killa B”. In this welterweight rematch, the UFC veteran was clearly on a higher level from the start, picking his shots on “Smash Mode”. The ATT product worked the body of his opponent with constant liver kicks, that is until Amaya expected it. In a brilliant move, Saunders would fake low with a kick, prompting a drop in the guard of Amaya. The Orlando native would then launch a head kick that connected with evil intentions, rendering the Champions MMA product unconscious at 2:56 of the opener, advancing Saunders to the finals.
