The winner of Invicta FC’s featherweight bout between Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and Ediane Gomes will face Marloes Coenen for the Invicta FC featherweight title at Invicta FC 6. The inaugural championship bout was previously rumored prior to Santos’s signing with Invicta – originally pitting Gomes against Julia Budd – but was made official by the promotion earlier this week.
Coenen is the former Strikeforce bantamweight champion – losing her belt to Miesha Tate at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson” – and has spent the majority of her career switching between bantamweight and featherweight. The Dutch fighter was cut by Zuffa/Forza after a dispute between her team, Golden Glory, and the UFC parent company that had to do with Alistair Overeem. Coenen has fought twice since her release, defeating Romy Ruyssen and Fiona Muxlow. The Dutch striker will now set her sights on the winner of Gomes vs. “Cyborg” for a bout later this year.
Also of note,UFC president Dana White confirmed reports that Santos was signed to a deal that would have seen her primarily fight for Invicta FC at featherweight. The apparent breaking point was the UFC’s lack of interest in a women’s featherweight division, requiring Santos to cut down to 135lbs. for her lone UFC fight. Santos will now fight strictly with Invicta FC and remain at featherweight.
To facilitate the switch, Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp took care of Gomes original opponent, Budd, by pairing her with the aforementioned Muxlow.
The fiftteen-fight Invicta FC 5 bill features two title fights on what will likely be an online PPV. The card will be headlined by Invicta atomweight champion Jessica Penne defending her title against “The Karate Hottie” Michelle Waterson. The card will take place at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri.
