The UFC went to London, England for UFC on FUEL TV 7 tonight at historic Wembley Arena. Tonight’s main event featured an explosive battle for the interim bantamweight crown as Renan Barão battled Michael McDonald in a great fight.
In the end, the Brazilian’s attack proved too much for the young Californian as he submitted McDonald via arm-triangle in the fourth round. The young gun has his best moments early in the fight, where he rocked Barão and nearly finished the champion in the first round. Barão would rally however, and seemed to figure out the pattern to McDonald’s attacks in the third and fourth rounds.
The fight hinged on a crucial exchange in the fourth round, as Barão ducked a punch and secured a body lock takedown on McDonald. The Brazilain then expertly took his opponent’s back and then seized an opportunity as McDonald tried to face his opponent. The young Californian would valiantly try to defend the choke, but the champion refused to relent and secured the submission victory.
Rd. 1 – Touch of gloves and we are off. Spinning back kick by Barao to start the action. McDonald throws and Barao with a level change and bodylock takedown into side control. McDonald recovers guard and traps Barao’s wrist, if he could pivot he has a submission. McDonald uses it to escape instead. Nice left by McDonald. Counter right by McDonald. McDonald storms forward and eats a wicked counter left by Barao.Barao shoots but gets stuffed. Nice counter left hook by Barao.Big left by McDonald and he swarms with right hooks. Barao falls briefly on a short left but recovers and then rocks McDonald on his own. Big knee by Barao and he then lands a backtrip takedown into guard. Body shots by Barao but McDonald ties up an arm. Barao gets free briefly as the round ends and lands a hammer fist and McDonald fires a counter. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Barao.
Rd. 2 – Slower pace to start the round. Accidental headbutt from McDonald. Single leg attempt by Barao and after an initial defense by McDonald he gets him down. Nice upkick by McDonald and he escapes. Good right by McDonald. Accidental eyepoke and the fighters break for a moment. Both fighters connect off the restart. Nice left hook by Barao. Counter right by Barao. Solid Barao combo and a nice legkick to finish. Big front kick to face by Barao. McDonald catches a a kick but Barao stays balanced and works out. Nice combo by Barao and he misses a wheel kick as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 (20-18).
Rd. 3- Nice combo by Barao. McDonald answers and then gets stunned by Barao briefly. Barao tried to swarm but McDonald was countered. Solid combo off a rush by Barao and he then uses a bodylock to secure a takedown into side control but McDonald muscles his way out as Barao went for mount. Nice combo by McDonald but he eats a pair of big rights by Barao. The Brazilian is starting to take control as McDonald keeps using the same attacks but misses. Spinning back kick to the face lands flush by Barao. McDonald eats it, but it connected big time. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Barao (30-27).
Rd. 4 – Good left by Barao to start the action. McDonald again goes to his 1-2 rush offense but misses. McDonald stuffs a shot. Nice punch by Barao and McDonald just barely misses a big counter. McDonald’s nose is bleeding badly now. Ugly scramble but neither fighter lands much. Spinning back kick to the face by Barao. Barao ducks a hook and lands a body lock. Pair of big knees by Barao and he crushes McDonald’s rips. Barao has him down, takes his back but scrambles for an armtriangle and it’s in deep. McDonald tries to hold on but is forced to tap. Great performance by Barao.
