The UFC’s heavyweight division was thrown into disarray this past weekend with Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva defeating the presumed number one contender. Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez dropped by the UFC Tonight studios to discuss potential match ups in the division including the possibility of facing his training partner and coach, Daniel Cormier.

Will be interesting to see what really will happen when/if Cormier is clearly the #1 contender while Cain is still champ. Say Cormier steamrolls Mir and they set-up his next fight with JDS and he smashes him too. I do not believe the UFC would allow Cain to say “Nope, not going to fight him.” And would Cormier really enjoy staying the #1 contender until Cain is dethroned? I don’t think so.
I was also thinking what if Velasquez losses the title, would Cormier accept a titleshot then? Or would he defer saying it’s Cain’s to re-gain? I think he would take the title shot but then we’d have the same situation if Cormier were to win the belt with Cain refusing to fight the champ.
Remember guys, Cormier is cutting to 205 this fall. The only reason this is being discussed is because of Silva’s upset and the UFC suddenly being in need of someone to challenge for the title.
Has Cormier cut to 205 before? Just wondering if he knows that he can do it?
Chris, are you serious? Hopefully he won’t try the same weight cut he did in 2008.
He’s doing a slower weight cut for this event than for the Olympics.
