Live from Putra Indoor Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, ONE FC 7: Return of The Warriors kicked off a first-of-its-kind tournament to crown a Malaysian National Featherweight Champion. The Grand Prix saw Melvin Yeoh and Jian Kai Chee advance to the finals in a pair of thrilling contests.
Melvin Yeoh and Raymond Tiew went to war in their featherweight rematch, this time with tournament stakes on the line. “Overkill” found himself on his back in the first period, but was able to throw up constant submission threats from his back. The two would spend much of their time in the clinch, connecting with knees and elbows, where “Overkill” had the upperhand. It would all pay dividends in the second round, as Yeoh was able to lock up a triangle choke and force “The Rock” to tap at 3:29 of round two.
A.J. Lias Mansor kicked off the tournament by posting a dominant opening against Jian Kai Chee. The stocky frame of “Pyro” was used to outmuscle his younger opponent over the course of the first two rounds. It came at a price, however, as Mansor was clearly gassed by the end of the middle period. The winded former rugby player was utterly dominated for much of the third frame, failing on multiple takedowns and eating tons of strikes after being easily shucked away by his taller countryman. The lanky Malaysian was able to hurt his opponent several times throughout the last five minutes, posting the most dominant round of the fight. At the final bell, the judges rendered a contentious unanimous decision for Jian Kai Chee.
