Our UFC on Fox 6 preliminary coverage concludes with our final three preliminary fights. The highlight of tonight’s opening bouts was a light heavyweight battle between Ryan Bader and Vladimir Matyushenko that saw Bader leave victorious. In other action, fighters Shawn Jordan, Rafael Natal, and David Mitchell reigned supreme in their respective bouts.
Be sure to check out our full coverage of tonight’s card including recaps, play-by-play, and more.
Bader Taps Matyushenko
Ryan Bader wasted little time against longtime veteran Vladimir Matyushenko. Bader rocked the former Russian National Team member with a big left hook and quickly pounced into front headlock. Bader would lock his hands and crank the headlock before moving to half-guard to finish his opponent. The submission was the fastest submission in UFC light heavyweight division’s history, and also the first time Bader has won by submission. It was also the first time “The Janitor” had been submitted in his prestigious MMA career.
Jordan Rebounds to Stop Russow
Former LSU fullback Shawn Jordan rebounded after a brutal opening round to defeat the hometown favorite Mike Russow. The former Chicago police officer blasted Jordan in the first and appeared to have the Bayou Bengal on the ropes for most of the first round. In the second round, Jordan obviously listened to cornerman Greg Jackson and launched a great comeback that took advantage of the tiring Russow. Jordan would eventually secure back mount and forced a stop to the fight in the latter half of the round.
Natal Submits Spencer
Rafael Natal defeated late-replacement Sean Spencer to open up the FX preliminary card. Natal seemed to get stronger as the fight wore on against Spencer, as he would eventually transition from an americana attempt to an arm-triangle to force Spencer to tap in the third. Spencer should get another chance in the UFC however, as the undersized fighter put up a good fight on short notice.
Mitchell Defeats Thoresen
In tonight’s opening bout, David Mitchell defeated Simeon Thoresen. Mitchell was the far more aggressive fighter in tonight’s bout, attacking from every position the fight went to. Unfortunately for the viewers on Facebook, the third round was cut short on the feed after the bout ran over due to two stoppages. That said, not much appeared to change as Mitchell picked up the unanimous decision.
- Ryan Bader def. Vladimir Matyushenko via submission (guillotine choke) at 0:50 of Round 1
- Shawn Jordan def. Mike Russow via TKO (punches) at 3:48 of Round 2
- Rafael Natal def. Sean Spencer via submission (arm-triangle) at 2:13 of Round 3
- David Mitchell def. Simeon Thoresen via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
