MMA Frenzy was recently given the opportunity to sit down with Bjorn Rebney and discuss some of the intriguing points of the forthcoming eighth season. Having started his career a fight lawyer, the MMA game has always been a bit business, a bit pleasure with the Bellator CEO, and it’s never been more apparent than it is heading into tonight’s Spike TV debut.
Bellator's Expansion & Move To Spike
While the move to Spike TV may be the most obvious aspect of Bellator’s eighth season to get excited for, it’s still a very salient talking point.
Ahead of tonight’s debut, there’s a very noticeable change in the air given off by Bellator, more money has gone into promotion as the organization brings MMA “home” to Spike TV, which has finally brought in that elusive big fight feel.
CEO Bjorn Rebney told MMAFrenzy, “This expansion is the culmination of the work we put in with our partner over the last two years.” The CEO continued, “Spike is the home of MMA fans and has been since 2005. The move to Spike is enormous. It's absolutely the ideal situation that I envisioned years ago. “
One aspect of the move that has been widely overlooked is the switch to high definition broadcasting. While HD is nothing new to the Spike.com feed, that format almost exclusively catered to the hardcore audience, not the casual fan base who would be tuning in. “The key is to put unbelievable fights in the cage and put amazing quality on the screen," according to Rebney, and with Spike’s experienced production team behind the promotion, the latter is almost a guarantee.
